JOHNSON/JOHNSTON GENEALOGY
Compiled by Glenn Gohr

I take pride in my wife's Johnson lineage because of their distinguished service in the military in various early wars that were fought in our country. Although Johnson is a common surname, my wife's bunch of Johnsons is centered now in Madison County, Arkansas.

Prior to the American Revolution they were in Lunenberg County, Virginia. Because of my interest in the Revolutionary War, I am proud that my wife descends from James Johnson, who was a Major in the 6th Virginia Regiment during the American Revolution. Also, his son, Martin Johnson, was a soldier in the War of 1812 and was the first of the Johnson family to settle in Madison County, Arkansas.

My wife also descends through Martin's grandson, Lieutenant John Johnson, who served in Company G, 1st Arkansas Infantry in the Union Army during the Civil War.

There is intermarriage between the Johnson and Combs families in Tennessee and in Arkansas. Ruby (Johnson) Wiedeman has written a book on the Johnson family that settled in Madison County, Arkansas. Her records form the basis for this lineage.

Interestingly enough, one researcher has found a JOHNSTON family living in Lunenberg Co., VA in the 1700s which has many of the same names as this JOHNSON family. From Records of Ruby Johnson Wiedeman, the early generations of this family back in Virginia during the Revolutionary War period and earlier did use JOHNSTON as a spelling.

The best source on this Johnson family is the book, The Johnson Family 1743-1978, revised and enlarged by Ruby Johnson Wiedeman, copyright 1978. The book has 344 pages and an index. It is a well-documented treatment of this family from the Revolutionary War period up through 1978, when the book was written.

I have been placing updated information on some Johnson Genealogy from Virginia, Tennessee, and Madison Co., Arkansas on the WorldConnect site with Rootsweb. It includes the basic information on every family member traced (except I have omitted birth and marriage dates on living family members, for privacy reasons.). Some Johnson Genealogy from Virginia, Tennessee, and Madison Co., Arkansas database on WorldConnect can be accessed at: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=g-johnson

An online genealogy forum for posting queries has also been set up specifically for the JOHNSTON family on GenForum. It can be found at the following address:

    http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/johnston

***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the JOHNSON/JOHNSTON lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.
