Some Littlefield Families in the U.S. and England

I have been researching the Littlefield family ever since 1973 when I first began my search for ancestors. I remember that my Granny (Orpha) Harris, had a photo album which included a picture of "Grandma Littlefield." This would be Nancy Artimesia (Woolverton) Littlefield, who lived to be 96 1/2 years old and died at Adamsville, Tennessee in 1926, leaving a host of descendants, including my mother who was 4 1/2 years old when Grandma Littlefield died.

I am indebted to researchers like George Washington Littlefield (son of John Monroe Littlefield) of El Dorado, Oklahoma who did research years ago; James L. Littlefield of Adamsville, Tennessee who wrote a brief history of the Littlefield family; Miss Kittye Littlefield of Adamsville, Tennessee who held on to her grandfather's (James L. Littlefield) history of the Littlefields and provided personal knowledge of the Littlefields to me; Margaret Littlefield Siegrist of Palo Pinto, Texas who did a lot of research on the extended Littlefield family of Texas; Charles Littlefield Seaman (now deceased) of Ogunquit, Maine who published a quarterly newsletter called the Littlefield Family Newsletter which began publication in January 1991 (The newsletter is now published by Pete and Barb Woodbury); Katherine Littlefield Smith of Tulsa, Oklahoma; John Robert Foster of El Paso, Texas; Ann Littlefield Coleman; Gail R. Blancett; Gladys Littlefield Sellers; Greg Littlefield; Alan Littlefield; Andrew Littlefield; Ken Akers; and many, many others for their assistance in tracing the Littlefield line.

The Littlefield family history is quite interesting and includes such notable people as George Washington Littlefield for whom the town of Littlefield, Texas, is named and who also donated a large sum of money to the University of Texas at Austin.

Catherine (Littlefield) Greene, the wife of Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene, is also reported to be a relative, but the exact kinship to me is still unproven. (I find this most interesting because I belong to the Sons of the American Revolution and I live in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, which is named after General Greene. There is Nathanael Greene park here. Also I have been assisting the Ozark Mountain Chapter Sons of the American Revolution in erecting a plaque in memory of General Nathanael Greene which will be included in Founders Park, a historical timeline display to be located near the Springfield town square.) On July 3, 2002, the William Freeman Society Children of the American Revolution presented a framed portrait of General Nathanael Greene to the Greene County court judges here in Springfield, Missouri. The portrait now hangs on the 2nd floor of the Greene County Courthouse.) Catherine "Caty" (Littlefield) Greene appears to be a descendant of Edmund Littlefield who settled at Wells, Maine in the early 1600s.

Another interesting sidelight is that located here in Maple Park Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri (the town where I live) is a gravemarker for Martha (Littlefield) Hall. On the marker is a plaque honoring her as not only a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, but also as a "Real Daughter." To be classified as a real daughter, a female must have become an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and also been the daughter of a Revolutionary War soldier. Martha (Littlefield) Hall belonged to a chapter of the DAR. located in Kansas City, Missouri, although she lived in Springfieldl, Missouri. She was the daughter of Jotham Littlefield and granddaughter of Jotham Littlefield, Sr. (1747-1834). It is Jotham Littlefield, Sr. who was the Revolutionary War soldier, so Martha is actually a GRANDDAUGHTER of a Revolutionary soldier. It appears that when the DAR reviewed her application, they confused the two Jotham Littlefields. (Early DAR applications do not necessarily list birth and death dates of ancestors, and her DAR application is unclear on this point.) The marker is still very interesting, and it is also noteworthy that her son was Professor A. P. Hall, one of the early professors at Drury College (now Drury University) here in Springfield, Missouri. He was a devout Christian who often voiced his faith. He served as a lay preacher in the local Presbyterian Church when it was without a pastor, and it is on record that he witnessed often to one of his colleague professors who was an avowed atheist. The man lived to be over 100 years old never accepted the offer of salvation as given by A. P. Hall as far as anyone knows. This other professor just passed away in about 2001. It is nice to have a tie to some of the local history here in Springfield, Missouri.

My family of Littlefields is the "Southern" Branch, being descendants of William Littlefield, who settled in Maryland in the early 1700s.

Some variant spellings of Littlefield include Lilifeld and Litrefils.

Two U.S. Presidents are also descended from the Littlefield family of Maine. They are Millard Fillmore and Calvin Coolidge. This has been mentioned in the Littlefield Family Newsletter. Also on the Littlefield and the Littlefield-Roots e-mail lists, as well as being documented in Burke's Presidential Families of the United States, 2nd ed. and Ancestors of American Presidents, compiled by Gary Boyd Roberts

Research is now being done in England to hopefully tie in all of the Littlefield families in the U.S., especially the Edmund Littlefield family that first settled in Wells, Maine in the 1600s and the William Littlefield family that settled in Maryland in the 1700s. A Littlefield DNA study being conducted through Oxford Ancestors is helping to tie the families together in the U.S. and England. The administrator is John Littlefield of England. A few DNA participants have also tested with as DNA Heritage, a company in the U.S. And a couple of results have been posted as Ysearch.org. I've also come across a few Littlefields living in colonial Virginia who do not seem to be related to either the Edmund or the William line, unless they are forebears of William and then William would not be the immigrant ancestor. This needs more research.

Here is my LITTLEFIELD lineage:

  1. William LITTLEFIELD, Sr., b. bef. 1725 prob. Salisbury, England, d. ca. 1780 in Spartanburg Co/Union Co., SC; md. ca. 1748 prob. in Frederick Co., MD to Rebeckah LEE, b. ca. 1728 in Maryland, d. aca. 1792 Spartanburg Co./Union Co., SC
  2. William LITTLEFIELD, Jr., b. 16 May 1756 Frederick Co., MD, d. 15 Oct. 1836 Dekalb Co., AL; md. 2nd, ca. 1823 Spartanburg, SC to Sarah TURNER, b. 1789 Spartanburg, Spartanburg Co., SC, d. 1832 McLemoresville, Carroll Co., TN (she is buried in the Leach Cemetery, Carroll Co., TN)
  3. Luther Rice LITTLEFIELD, b. 25 Dec. 1826 Spartanburg, Spartanburg Co., SC, d. 25 Mar. 1903 Adamsville, McNairy Co., TN; md. 28 Dec. 1848 Jonesborough, Tippah Co., MS to Nancy Artimesia WOOLVERTON, b. 28 Aug. 1829 Maury Co., TN, d. 24 Jan. 1926 Adamsville, McNairy Co., TN (both buried in the Adamsville Cemetery)
  4. Sarah Agatha LITTLEFIELD, b. 28 Oct. 1849 Jonesborough, Tippah Co., MS, d. 7 Feb. 1940 Leapwood, McNairy Co., TN; md. 18 Oct. 1868 McNairy Co., TN to William Ashley HARRIS, b. 19 May 1849 Hardin Co., TN, d. 12 Mar. 1916 McNairy Co., TN (both buried in the Mars Hill Cemetery, McNairy Co., TN)
  5. James David HARRIS, b. 9 Jan. 1871 McNairy Co., TN, d. 22 Sept. 1938 Marlow, Stephens Co., OK (buried in the Marlow Cemetery); md. 28 Oct. 1894 McNairy Co., TN to Docia Bell PYRON, b. 5 Oct. 1872 McNairy Co., TN, d. 1 Sept. 1944 Lyford, Willacy Co., TX (buried at Combes, TX)
  6. William Earl HARRIS, b. 8 Aug. 1895 McNairy Co., TN, d. 5 Jan. 1967 Cortez, Montezuma Co., CO; md. 12 Dec. 1915 Parker Co., TX to Orpha Antonia Hazel GARVIN, b. 11 Nov. 1895 Jack Co., TX, d. 21 Dec. 1979 Cortez, Montezuma Co., CO (both buried in the Dove Creek Cemetery, Dove Creek, CO) *These are my grandparents.

UNPLACED LITTLEFIELDS

I have been trying to map out various different lines of Littlefields in the U.S., Canada, England, and elsewhere. Several of these are unlinked, so I am listing them here in hopes that someone else will have additional information. These are each the earliest known Littlefield ancestor in each family (I do have information on descendants of these individuals in most cases, but I am just listing the founders of each family here).

Charles W. Littlefield (b. ca. 1835), of Corning, New York (married Mary Jane Bunnell), of unknown ancestry
Daniel Samuel Littlefield (1797-1887), of Delavan, Wisconsin (married Mehitable Paddock), of unknown ancestry
Ebenezer Littlefield (d. 1821), of Windham, Connecticut (married Beulah Sawyer), of unknown ancestry
Edmund Littlefield (1592-1661), of Wells, Maine (married Annis Austin), son of Francis Littlefield (1565-1618), of Titchfield, Hampshire, England
Francis Littlefield (1565-1618), of Titchfield, Hampshire, England (married Mary _______), line who are NOT descendants of Edmund Littlefield of Maine (including descendants of James Littlefield of Wells, Maine as well as other descendants in Great Britain, South Africa, etc.)
John Littlefield (b. ca. 1625-aft. 1675), of Dedham, Massachusetts (married Mary Mere)
John Henry Littlefield (1857-1924), of Sitka, Alaska (married Martha Scoves White)
Samuel Littlefield (ca. 1780-aft. 1860), of Berwick, Maine (married Elizabeth Thurston), of unknown ancestry
William Littlefield (ca. 1720-ca. 1780), of Frederick Co., Maryland (married Rebeckah Lee) [*This is my line]
George William Brown/Littlefield (1856-1931), of Wakefield, New Hampshire (*adopted into the Littlefield family)
Joseph Lilifeld, of Volendam, Holland and Chicago, Illinois (married Caroline "Carrie" Biske in 1885) (*descendants changed their last name to Littlefield)
William H. Stage/William Frantsie Littlefield (d. 1888), of Weld, Colorado (married Mary Hockman & Josephine Morse) (*changed last name to Littlefield)
*African American Littlefield lines who adopted the Littlefield name

Undoubtedly, many of the Unknown lines will prove to be descendants of Edmund Littlefield of Maine (especially if the family lives in Maine or New England), but until the exact lineage is known, I will denote the line as Unknown.

LITTLEFIELD FAMILY NEWSLETTER

If you are interested in keeping abreast of the latest findings and historical references regarding the Littlefield Family and the ongoing research that is being done on all lines in the U.S. and overseas, be sure to subscribe to the Littlefield Family Newsletter which began publication in January 1991. The cost is $12.50 per year. Back issues are also available.

Charles Littlefield Seaman of Ogunquit, Maine was the founding editor and publisher of this newsletter. He passed away in the August of 2003. The Charles Littlefield Seaman collection is now in the Winn House in Ogunquit. Since his death, the newsletter is being published by another couple from Ogunquit, Maine who knew Charles Littlefield Seaman and have an interest in the Littlefields. They are Pete and Barb Woodbury. Their contact information is:

Littlefield Family Newsletter
P.O. Box 912
Ogunquit, ME 03907-0912
Ph. 207-646-0436

There is also information in the newsletters on a Littlefield DNA study which is currently in progress. Charles Seaman was overseeing that project when it started. This project is being conducted through Oxford Ancestors and is helping to tie the families together in the U.S. and England. It will benefit all Littlefields of all lines, proven and unproven. Also plans for a Littlefield Reunion were in the making before Charles Seaman passed away. The reunion was held at Wells, Maine on the weekend of June 18, 2004. More information about the reunion is available in the Littlefield Family Newsletter, on The Littlefield Family Reunion 2004 Page, and on Greg Littlefield's Littlefield Family Research Page.

LEAVES OF CHESTNUT RIDGE

I want to introduce you to a new book still new off the press (July 2003). It is a historical novel based on the lives of the James Lee family and also the family of William Littlefield of Maryland who married James' daughter, Rebeckah. It is based on facts which have been gleaned in courthouses and through family tradition, etc. The author is Ann Littlefield Coleman, daughter of Elmo Littlefield, granddaughter of John Monroe Littlefield. She is a descendant of William Littlefield of Maryland and has become well acquainted with this family. This book would be of interest to anyone researching Littlefield history or those interested in historical novels of the period. I highly recommend this book.

About the novel (from Ann Coleman):

"In April of 1978 my sister and I took our father back to his boyhood home in Adamsville, Tennessee. I watched as he stopped, old and feeble, leaning on his cane at the porch of his grandparents' old run-down house. He had been away for seventy-two years, and I wondered about the emotions and memories this trip evoked. It was as if he expected his grandmother Artemesia to come out the door and shake her finger at him for staying away too long. At that moment I knew I would someday write the story of my father's heritage. Little did I know it would take me back to the 1700's in Frederick Co. Maryland for this first book. Sadly, Daddy could not wait around long enough to read it.

"Leaves of Chestnut Ridge begins with the burial of the old patriarch, James Lee in Frederick Co. Maryland (the land was later divided to become Montgomery Co.) and carries through to all of his children. The Littlefield connection comes through Rebeckah Lee who married William Littlefield. William, of course, was the first Littlefield from the Maryland branch to come to the shores of America. The story of our ancestors is entertwined around the true historical events from the history books and the courthouse documents. It includes the reliving of the French and Indian War through those that fought it, as well with the Mason Dixon line disagreements and the Stamp Act rebellion. See the old Fredericktown through the eyes of Rachel Lee as she goes to file her father's will on Feb. 14, 1764. Know the real people listed on his will--Thomas Butler, the Madden boys, William Betterton, and those calling in the debts. Visit the family farms, know the neighbors and those leading the country just prior to the beginning of the Revolutionary War. As best I could, after thirteen years of research, I have set out to introduce you to their lives and their names."

To the kind souls that requested a notice about the novel's publishing:

LITTLEFIELD E-MAIL LIST

Because of my research on the Littlefield Family, in February 1997 I helped to get a Littlefield e-mail list started. Because of my many other activities, I originally turned the running of this list over to Alan Littlefield who lives at Cape Town, South Africa. But as of October 1999, I am now the list manager for the two Littlefield E-mail lists on Rootsweb. If you have queries concerning the LITTLEFIELD surname, you may post these at the Littlefield Family Genealogy List which I manage.

Littlefield Genealogy List is a part of the Rootsweb e-mail discussion lists. It offers free queries and discussion on the Littlefield surname and variant spellings in NORTH AMERICA—There is a separate list for research in Great Britain and other places.

To subscribe, send an e-mail to: [email protected]
Leave subject line blank (This will be ignored).
In the body of the message type: subscribe

Then a welcome message will be sent telling how to post messages. Once you are subscribed, you may send a query to everyone on the list by sending e-mail to: [email protected]

Archived postings to the Littlefield e-mail list can be found on the WEB at:

    https://mailinglists.rootsweb.com/listindexes/

When prompted, type in LITTLEFIELD for the name of the list. A second screen will appear where you can choose a year and type in a search word(s). If you type in LITTLEFIELD you would probably get all the previous postings to the list. You can also type in a person's name instead or a locality to narrow your search. If you wish to do a search by date, try entering it in quotation marks with the day and then the month as "01 Mar" using single digit dates preceded by a zero and only the first three letters of the month.

LITTLEFIELD-ROOTS E-MAIL LIST

If you have queries concerning the LITTLEFIELD surname, you may post these at the Littlefield Family Genealogy List which I also manage.

Littlefield-Roots Genealogy List is a part of the Rootsweb e-mail discussion lists. It offers free queries and discussion on the Littlefield surname and variant spellings in Great Britain, South Africa, and anywhere else other than North America. It is also set up as a place to inquire about the early British Roots of the Littlefield family.

ROOTSWEB LITTLEFIELD MESSAGE BOARDS

There are several Message Boards on Rootsweb which are set up for the LITTLEFIELD surname. These boards are for posting information in the following categories: BIBLE, BIOGRAPHY, BIRTH, CEMETERY, CENSUS, DEATH, DEED, IMMIGRATION, LOOKUP, MARRIAGE, MILITARY, OBITUARY, PENSION, QUERIES, and WILLS. The search perameters and drop down screen on the main page allow you to do a key word search or to view all postings according to one of the above categories. Click on the icon below to access the Littlefield Message Boards.

Query Post a query (or information from any one of the above categories) on any LITTLEFIELD name or related family. Please give dates, and locations they lived. Try to give as much information as possible.

An online genealogy forum for posting queries has also been setup specifically for the Littlefield family. It can be found at the following address:

    http://genforum.genealogy.com/littlefield

***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the Littlefield lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.
