Some Littlefield Families in the U.S. and England
I have been researching the Littlefield family ever since 1973 when I first began my search for ancestors. I remember that my Granny (Orpha) Harris, had a photo album which included a picture of "Grandma Littlefield." This would be Nancy Artimesia (Woolverton) Littlefield, who lived to be 96 1/2 years old and died at Adamsville, Tennessee in 1926, leaving a host of descendants, including my mother who was 4 1/2 years old when Grandma Littlefield died.
I am indebted to researchers like George Washington Littlefield (son of John Monroe Littlefield) of El Dorado, Oklahoma who did research years ago; James L. Littlefield of Adamsville, Tennessee who wrote a brief history of the Littlefield family; Miss Kittye Littlefield of Adamsville, Tennessee who held on to her grandfather's (James L. Littlefield) history of the Littlefields and provided personal knowledge of the Littlefields to me; Margaret Littlefield Siegrist of Palo Pinto, Texas who did a lot of research on the extended Littlefield family of Texas; Charles Littlefield Seaman (now deceased) of Ogunquit, Maine who published a quarterly newsletter called the
Littlefield Family Newsletter which began publication in January 1991 (The newsletter is now published by Pete and Barb Woodbury); Katherine Littlefield Smith of Tulsa, Oklahoma; John Robert Foster of El Paso, Texas; Ann Littlefield Coleman; Gail R. Blancett; Gladys Littlefield Sellers; Greg Littlefield; Alan Littlefield; Andrew Littlefield; Ken Akers; and many, many others for their assistance in tracing the Littlefield line.
The Littlefield family history is quite interesting and includes such notable people as George Washington Littlefield for whom the town of Littlefield, Texas, is named and who also donated a large sum of money to the University of Texas at Austin.
Catherine (Littlefield) Greene, the wife of Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene, is also reported to be a relative, but the exact kinship to me is still unproven. (I find this most interesting because I belong to the Sons of the American Revolution and I live in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, which is named after General Greene. There is Nathanael Greene park here. Also I have been assisting the Ozark Mountain Chapter Sons of the American Revolution in erecting a plaque in memory of General Nathanael Greene which will be included in Founders Park, a historical timeline display to be located near the Springfield town square.) On July 3, 2002, the William Freeman Society Children of the American Revolution presented a framed portrait of General Nathanael Greene to the Greene County court judges here in Springfield, Missouri. The portrait now hangs on the 2nd floor of the Greene County Courthouse.) Catherine "Caty" (Littlefield) Greene appears to be a descendant of Edmund Littlefield who settled at Wells, Maine in the early 1600s.
Another interesting sidelight is that located here in Maple Park Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri (the town where I live) is a gravemarker for Martha (Littlefield) Hall. On the marker is a plaque honoring her as not only a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, but also as a "Real Daughter." To be classified as a real daughter, a female must have become an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and also been the daughter of a Revolutionary War soldier. Martha (Littlefield) Hall belonged to a chapter of the DAR. located in Kansas City, Missouri, although she lived in Springfieldl, Missouri. She was the daughter of Jotham Littlefield and granddaughter of Jotham Littlefield, Sr. (1747-1834). It is Jotham Littlefield, Sr. who was the Revolutionary War soldier, so Martha is actually a GRANDDAUGHTER of a Revolutionary soldier. It appears that when the DAR reviewed her application, they confused the two Jotham Littlefields. (Early DAR applications do not necessarily list birth and death dates of ancestors, and her DAR application is unclear on this point.) The marker is still very interesting, and it is also noteworthy that her son was Professor A. P. Hall, one of the early professors at Drury College (now Drury University) here in Springfield, Missouri. He was a devout Christian who often voiced his faith. He served as a lay preacher in the local Presbyterian Church when it was without a pastor, and it is on record that he witnessed often to one of his colleague professors who was an avowed atheist. The man lived to be over 100 years old never accepted the offer of salvation as given by A. P. Hall as far as anyone knows. This other professor just passed away in about 2001. It is nice to have a tie to some of the local history here in Springfield, Missouri.
My family of Littlefields is the "Southern" Branch, being descendants of William Littlefield, who settled in Maryland in the early 1700s.
Some variant spellings of Littlefield include Lilifeld and Litrefils.
Two U.S. Presidents are also descended from the Littlefield family of Maine. They are Millard Fillmore and Calvin Coolidge. This has been mentioned in the Littlefield Family Newsletter. Research is now being done in England to hopefully tie in all of the Littlefield families in the U.S., especially the Edmund Littlefield family that first settled in Wells, Maine in the 1600s and the William Littlefield family that settled in Maryland in the 1700s. A Littlefield DNA study being conducted through Oxford Ancestors is helping to tie the families together in the U.S. and England. The administrator is John Littlefield of England. A few DNA participants have also tested with as DNA Heritage, a company in the U.S. And a couple of results have been posted as Ysearch.org. I've also come across a few Littlefields living in colonial Virginia who do not seem to be related to either the Edmund or the William line, unless they are forebears of William and then William would not be the immigrant ancestor. This needs more research.

Francis Littlefield (1565-1618), of Titchfield, Hampshire, England (married Mary _______), line who are NOT descendants of Edmund Littlefield of Maine (including descendants of James Littlefield of Wells, Maine as well as other descendants in Great Britain, South Africa, etc.)
John Littlefield (b. ca. 1625-aft. 1675), of Dedham, Massachusetts (married Mary Mere)
John Henry Littlefield (1857-1924), of Sitka, Alaska (married Martha Scoves White)

Undoubtedly, many of the Unknown lines will prove to be descendants of Edmund Littlefield of Maine (especially if the family lives in Maine or New England), but until the exact lineage is known, I will denote the line as Unknown.
Charles Littlefield Seaman of Ogunquit, Maine was the founding editor and publisher of this newsletter. He passed away in the August of 2003. The Charles Littlefield Seaman collection is now in the Winn House in Ogunquit. Since his death, the newsletter is being published by another couple from Ogunquit, Maine who knew Charles Littlefield Seaman and have an interest in the Littlefields. There is also information in the newsletters on a Littlefield DNA study which is currently in progress. Charles Seaman was overseeing that project when it started. This project is being conducted through Oxford Ancestors and is helping to tie the families together in the U.S. and England. It will benefit all Littlefields of all lines, proven and unproven. Also plans for a Littlefield Reunion were in the making before Charles Seaman passed away. The reunion was held at Wells, Maine on the weekend of June 18, 2004.
