MCMURRY/MCMURRAY GENEALOGY
Compiled by Glenn Gohr

Although it would be great to find out my wife was related to that wonderful father of "My Three Sons," whom we all know as Fred McMurry, I doubt I'll ever have that satisfaction. For one thing, I don't know Fred's ancestry.

Also of interest is that the current chapter secretary for the Ozark Mountain Chapter Sons of the American Revolution in Springfield, Missouri where I live is Dan McMurray. His McMurray line has not been in the U.S. very long. I believe they are from Ireland. He has several lines from the New England states. I'm sure he'd be glad to hear from anyone else researching the McMurray surname.

And as you see from the listing that follows, I have a long way to go to discover my wife's own McMurry ancestry, as I am stuck on two different McMurry/McMurray lines which may or may not be connected to each other. They meet up in Madison County, Arkansas, where so many of her families settled in the late 1800s and still live there, except for the ones who moved on to Oklahoma or California.

Here is my wife's McMURRY lineage as far as can be proven:

Lineage #1:

  1. John MCMURRY

  4. Sarah Frances "Fannie" JOHNSON, b. 22 Feb. 1854 Madison Co., AR, d. 1920 Madison Co., AR; md. May 1870 Madison Co., AR to John Calvin CALLICO, Jr., b. May 1847 Madison Co., AR, d. 22 Feb. 1927 Madison Co., AR (both buried in Wesley Cemetery, Madison Co., AR)

  2. Mary Ann "Polly" MCMURRAY, b. ca. 1795; d. ca. 1870 AR; md. Josiah MEANS, b. ca. 1785 TN, d. ca. 1870 AR

***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the MCMURRY lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.
