METZKE/MATZKE GENEALOGY
Compiled by Glenn Gohr
The Metzke surname is German, and the earliest ancestor in my branch of the family hails from near Grabow and Hohenkranig (now Kranjik Gorny), Brandenberg, Prussia, towns near the Oder River on the modern-day border between Germany and Poland.
I started research on the Metzke family in 1997 after corresponding through e-mail with a distant cousin, Kathy Zelus, who supplied all the information on the early generations of this family back in Prussia which comes from Lutheran Church records in Prussia . These were filmed by the LDS Church and are available on microfilm. Kathy sent me information on the LDS film numbers and the names and dates for the ancestors of Caroline (Kastner) Gensmer, generation #4, who is also her ancestor. Many thanks to Kathy for this valuable information.
Billy Gensmer, another researcher who is interested in this line, is wondering if Metzke is the same name as Matzke. There were several Matzkes who intermarried with the Gensmers in Dodge Co., Wisconsin and in Winona Co., Minnesota where Billy Gensmer's family lived. Many of the German families in these communities immigrated together and lived near each other, coming from the same place of origin, i.e. Alt Ruednitz, Brandenberg Province, Prussia.
Here is my METZKE lineage as far as it has been proven:
