MURDOCH/MURDOCK/MURDUCK GENEALOGY
Compiled by Glenn Gohr

I know almost nothing about my wife's Murdoch lineage. I have tried to locate Louella Murdoch in census and other records of early Washington County, Tennessee, but so far have not determined her parents or anything more about her. The information shown is from records in the possession of my wife's parents, Bill and Joy Brown of Conway, Missouri.

It appears to me that MURDOCH must be a Scottish name. I have found at least one Murdoch from Scotland who was famous. Everyone knows of the sinking of the Titanic and the motion picture about this historic event. According to an article by Helen Smith in Reuters, April 8, 1998, the first officer of the Titanic was William Murdoch. She calls William Murdoch a real hero, in that he "did his utmost to save passengers, guiding them into boats and then throwing deckchairs overboard for those in the sea to cling to. He drowned when the ship went down." Murdoch is considered a hero in his hometown of Dalbeattie, Scotland.

Here is my wife's MURDOCH lineage as far as can be proven:

  1. Louella MURDOCH, b. 21 June 1864 Washington Co., TN, d. 12 March 1937 TN; md. 18 Feb. 1883 in TN to William B. BROWN, b. 28 Oct. 1858 Washington Co., TN, d. 21 Jan. 1935 TN
  2. Walter P. BROWN, b. 9 July 1903 Greenville, Greene Co., TN, d. 1 Nov. 1955 Home Gardens, Riverside Co., CA;md. 12 July 1927 Riverside, Riverside Co., CA to Mary Marie STUMPF, b. 8 June 1907 at sea (Atlantic Ocean), d. 7 June 1975 San Bernardino, San Bernardino Co., CA *These are my wife's grandparents.

***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the MURDOCH/MURDOCK lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.
