ROEMHILDT/ROMHILD GENEALOGY
Compiled by Glenn Gohr

The ROEMHILDT surname is German, and the earliest ancestor in my branch of the family hails from Bohlen, Schwarzburg, Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, Thuringen (now Germany). I have also seen this surname spelled as Roemhild, Romhild, etc.

I started research on this family in 1973 and visited Waterville, and Elysian, Minnesota in 1977 and 1978 to meet distant relatives there and to learn more about the Roemhildt family history. Others of the Minnesota cousins are also researching this family. My last visit to Minnesota was in August 1995. I hope to return soon to do more research.

Although my direct ancestor, Traugott Roemhildt, did not fight in the Civil War, his younger brother, Adelhardt Roemhildt, served in the Union Army in Wisconsin, shortly after the Roemhildt family arrived in the U.S. Because of this, any Roemhildt descendant could join the Sons of Union Veterans. Sons of Union Veterans allows collateral relatives to join, and not just direct descendants. This is my only known Civil War relative on my father's side of the family, and also the only known Union soldier. My other Civil War ancestors fought for the Confederacy:

Some of the Roemhildts in Minnesota have held family reunions in the past. Notably, the family of Rudolph Roemhildt, brother of my Holda (Roemhildt) Quiram used to hold annual reunions. I attended one of these in 1977 at Elysian, Minnesota when I visited cousins Emil and Emma (Roemhildt) Quiram. They were my grandmother's double first cousins. Emma was a daughter of Uncle Rudolph.. Another family, that of Hugo Roemhildt, has also held reunions in the past. Hugo was a son of Uncle Hermann Roemhildt, a brother of Rudolph and Holda. A couple of different Roemhildt families held reunions in Minnesota in July and August of 2000. I wanted to attend at least one of these, but my schedule would not permit me to go. I hope to be able to attend a Roemhildt reunion next time a group has one.

Some plans have been made for a Roemhildt Reunion, hopefully to continue on a regular basis, for any of the descendants of Johann Christian Roemhildt which settled in Wisconsin and southern Minnesota in the mid-1800s. The person to contact regarding reunions is:

    Mrs. Verna Hering
    R.R. 2, Box 102
    Waterville, MN 56096-9516
    Ph. 507-362-8689

Also, I've been amazed at all the materials available through the LDS Church either through microfilms of church records in Germany and Eastern Europe, or through their IGI and other official church records. Quite a bit of the early generations and vital information on the Roemhildts and related families from Heinrich Roemhildt on back comes from the LDS Ancestral File: http://www.familysearch.com

I have also placed updated information on the various Roemhildt families as far as I know about on the WorldConnect site with Rootsweb. My ROEMHILDT database can be accessed at: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=g-roemhildt

An online genealogy forum for posting queries has also been set up specifically for the ROEMHILDT family on GenForum. It can be found at the following address:

    http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/roemhildt

***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the ROEMHILDT lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.

Some other Roemhildt researchers and web sites include:

The Roemhildt Family Home Page and Descendants of Hermann Franz Roemhildt both maintained by Thomas J. Roemhildt, who is a grandson of Hugo Roemhildt who was a son of my gt-gt-uncle Hermann Franz Roemhildt.

Two excellent researchers I have made contact with on this line are Michael Loren Roemhildt, a grandson of Hugo Roemhildt (and brother of Thomas Roemhildt listed above), and Renata Anderson, a daughter of Serena (Roemhildt) Gensmer (who was a sister of Emma Roemhildt Quiram mentioned earlier).
