SARTAIN/SARTIN/CERTAIN GENEALOGY
Compiled by Glenn Gohr

The Sartain/Sartin family in the U.S., for the most part descends from a group of Sartains who lived in Virginia in the early 1700s. In some of the early Virginia and Georgia records the name is spelled “Certain,” just like it sounds. The earliest known ancestor in my line appears to be John Sertin who was born before 1707 in VA and who died about November 1760 in St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper County, VA. (See John Sertin's will for more specific information).

I am still working with Barbara Dunn, Larry Gaian, Gloria McComas Moore, Kay Rhett, Kenneth Sartin, Gay Till, and other people on the Sartin E-Mail List to sort out all the connections. Barbara Dunn is distantly related to me both through the Sartain family and also through my Turner family and has a lot of history on the Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky Sartains. Kay Rhett and Gay Till both descend from my great-great-grandfather, Russell Sartain, who was a Confederate Soldier who served from the State of Mississippi and who moved his family to Jack County, Texas, in the Gibtown Community. They have also helped a lot in my research.

Kenneth Sartin has set up a very nice web page at Kenneth Sartin’s Index Page. This page willl direct you to his genealogy page which is found at SARTIN/SARTAIN FAMILY LINKS AND RESOURCES and includes links to other Sartin/Sartain web pages, a downloadable copy of "Annals of the Sartain Tribe," census records, and a listing of early baptisms & marriages from Wiltshire Co., England, etc..

Sartain/Sartin descendants in the 1700s and 1800s migrated to Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and elsewhere. All of these families appear to be related. Some of the family even spell the name as Certain with other variations also noted such as Sertain, Sertin, Certin, Certing, Sardon, Sarton, etc.

The name Sartain is of French derivation and means "tailor." Most of the family in the U.S. pronounces the name with the emphasis on the first syllable, but in France and in a few other places the emphasis is put on the last syllable with a long "a" sound at the end.

Many of the early family members in France and England were French Huguenots as reported in an early manuscript printed by John Sartain, a noted engraver of Philadelphia who immigrated from London, England to Philadelphia with his wife in 1830. (This was a much later date than when the traced line of Virginia Sartains first appear in records in the early 1700s. Note: there are also records from the 1600s of persons named Sartain living in Virginia in the 1600s.)

John Sartain's manuscript printed in 1886 is called Annals of the Sartain Tribe: 1557 to 1886. It is also available in zip format at the following link: Annals of the Sartain Tribe: 1557 to 1886 Zip file.

The manuscript includes a brief history of the Huguenot history of the Sartains, then listings of baptisms 1557 to 1859; marriages 1578 to 1877, and burials 1579 to 1788 which all took place at Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England. Names and dates concerning the author's immediate family are also given. A copy of this manuscript may be obtained from the Family History Library at Salt Lake City. Kenneth Sartin has put a downloadable copy of this manuscript on his SARTIN/SARTAIN FAMILY LINKS AND RESOURCES page. This transcribed text version of the manuscript was provided by a kind researcher, John Sartain Feltham, of Australia, whose ancestors also come from Wiltshire County, England.

Ken Sartin also has a very large database or Gedcom of the Sartins/Sartains on his web page. This may be accessed at: Sartin/Sartain database gedcom file. This database is also available in zipped format: Sartin/Sartain database zipped.

Another brief history which concerns my own family is called History of the Sartain Family by W. Ernest Sartain, December 29, 1960. It is only 3 typed pages, but it shows the connection between all the descendants of Russell Sartain and Lewis Sartain who were double first cousins. After Lewis died in the Civil War, Russell married his widow. There were a total of 14 children in this family.

Eight were born to Russell and Melvina Sartain (his first wife); 3 were born to Lewis and Martha (Beard) Sartain; 3 more were born to Russell and Martha (Beard) Sartain-Sartain. And some of the step-children married each other, making this quite a mixed up family of relationships.

In my own line, I not only descend from Russell and Martha (Beard) Sartain, but I also descend from Russell's sister, Elizabeth Ann (Sartain) Garvin. My great-grandparents, McCager "Mac" Garvin and Elmira (Sartain) Garvin, were first cousins.

I have in my possession photocopies of a number of letters from the Civil War period and a little later which mostly are correspondence between Lewis and Martha (Beard) Sartain. One of the letters includes the sad news that Lewis had died. It was written by Lewis's brother, Gilford, and sent to Martha to inform her of Lewis's last days. There is also a letter that mentions the death of Grandpa Beard (Martha's father, Samuel F. Beard, who died 4 August 1880 in Madison County, GA.) I feel very fortunate to have been able to get photocopies of these letters, as I strongly believe the originals have since been destroyed. I am still in the process of transcribing and typing up these priceless old letters. Many have asked for copies, but I'd like to get them all typed up first.

These letters were passed down in my family from the Civil War time up to the present. They were last in the possession of Acqudell (Sartain) Hodges of Fort Worth, Texas who is now deceased. Acqudell has one sister, Amy, who is still living, but all of Acqudell's belongings went to her sons who probably have little appreciation for family history from what I gather. They have almost no contact with their Aunt Amy or any other family members.

Cousin Kay Rhett has been trying to organize a Sartain/Sartin family reunion to be held in Mississippi, probably in Yalobusha County. We hope we can get together sometime in 1999. If you have questions about the family reunion or want to help organize a reunion, contact Kay at: [email protected]

An online genealogy forum for posting queries has also been set up specifically for the SARTIN family on GenForum. It can be found at the following address:

    http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/sartin

***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the SARTAIN/SARTIN lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.

There is also a Sartin Message Board which was set up by Ken Sartin that works similar to how the Rootswseb and GenForum GenForum sites work:
