I am proud of all my military ancestors. Both of my grandfathers served for a short time during World War I. Both were married when the U.S. joined the conflict.
My grandpa Emil Gohr served only for a short time during 1918. He was a foot soldier and caught the flu during the great flue epidemic of 1918 and was sick for several months. During this sickness his hair turned snow white. He also became a father for the first time while he was away in service. The child that was born, was my father, Lawrence Robert Gohr, b. 9 October 1918. My grandmother, Frieda Gohr, stayed with her parents, C. A. and Holda Quiram while Emil was away in service and when her baby was born. My dad was born in a little hospital that Monte Vista, Colorado, had at that time. It was a very hard labor and delivery. The doctor had to use forceps and he was not sure if the baby would survive. He did!
On my mother's side of the family, I know that my grandpa Earl Harris also served for a short time in World War I as I remember seeing his uniform once when visiting the Harris farm at Dove Creek, Colorado. He was the oldest of 10 children & he was married & had a child born in 1917, about the time when the U.S. entered the fighting in World War I, so I don't believe he served very long. I doubt if any of his brothers were in World War I. His brother, Alvin, was already married by then also. The other brothers were too young to have served.
In the extended family, of the Gohr relatives, I am pretty sure that Uncle Otto Gohr and possibly Uncle Herman Gohr were in World War I. I don't know about any of the in-laws of that generation if they might have served in World War I or not.
On the Quiram and Garvin sides of my family, I never heard if any of the brothers of my grandmothers fought in World War I. Possibly Bill or Ed Quiram served, but I don't really know.
