GOMERY, GUMERY and GUMMERY Family
Groups During the 1600s the GOMERY and GUM(M)ERY
families are concentrated in Worcestershire and the parish registers show a
wide variation in the spelling of the surname. There are earlier mentions of
the surname in Newton St Cyres in Devon and the Lynchmere area of The earliest documented family that survived with the surname is that of Edmund GOMERY and Anne GOODE of Rochford who married in 1624 and raised a family of three known sons and two known daughters. The parish registers of the time give scant detail so it is difficult to piece the family groups together and it is necessary to consult wills, marriage licences and other records to confirm relationships, although this is not possible in every case. Another early Worcestershire family lived in Sutton in Tenbury parish from sometime before the 1670s. This is the family of John GOMERY who had at least three sons. It is not yet known if there is a connection between these two families. Research has shown there to be many family groups, and often there is variation in the spelling of the surname within each group. To simplify I have used the most common spelling to identify each separate family, along with the name of the area to where the family has been traced. Below is a list of the various family groups that have been researched:-
