Gummere Family of the USA John Gummere II Born about 1705 in Europe, possibly French Flanders, the son of Johannes Gömere
/ John Gummere and his wife Anna Koch. Sarah Deaves Born about 1708, the daughter of Isaac Deaves (1683-1750) from Cheltenham,
Gloucestershire, England and Martha Cock (1681-1750) from Oyster Bay, Nassau County, New
York. Children:-
Isaac and Martha Deaves came to Germantown sometime before 1714, when they signed and sealed an indenture on 21 July 1714 to take up 65 acres of land at Krisheim (Philadelphia County Deed 4D-54, dated 16 May 1715). Both the Deaves and Cock families were Quakers. John Gummere's father was a Brethren. The Brethren and Quaker beliefs are similar, so John must have joined the Quakers either in order to marry Sarah Deaves, or sometime before their marriage. Johannes sold his land on the Wissahickon River in Germantown, Pennsylvania to his elder son, Johannes (John), who in turn sold it to Benjamin Shoemaker on 29 October 1742. A few years later Shoemaker sold it to John Gorgas on 2 March 1746/7, whose brother Joseph built the three story stone house known as the Monastery. Up until 1741 John and Sarah Gummere attended the Abington Meeting House. In March 1741 they were received into the Concord Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania where they remained until Jan 1745 when they were received into the Goshen Monthly Meeting in Chester County. In May 1755 John Gomery, wife Sarah and children were granted a certificate to attend Abington Monthly Meeting. It would appear they remained in the Abington area as the tax list for 1769 for Abington Township, now in Montgomery County, lists John Gummere as a landholder there. Sarah Gummere née Deaves died on 29 November 1770, and John Gummere died in 1783.
