What can I do to help?
This project is immense. We've done our best to track people down and
confirm that information is correct, but it's very time consuming.
We need
your help to ensure that all the information presented here is correct
and up to date. Here's some things that you can do to help us...
Get the password!
If you don't already have it, email me and ask for the site password.
I don't want the password to limit family members from searching through
the site on a regular basis.
Check your page!
This site is probably riddled with errors... That's just a fact of life when
most of the information is gathered second or third hand. If you see any
"Unknowns", that's a good tip off that we're missing something. As well,
just because your page doesn't have any Unknowns doesn't mean that we have
all the information. What hospital were you born at? Are we missing a
middle name? If we only have the year for an event, can you provide a date?
Check your relatives' pages!
Is the information on your children correct? Your parents? Your aunts and
uncles? If there's information missing, and you don't know the answers,
email us and tell us who we can contact to get more information.
Check everybody's pages!
Are there any glaring errors? People marrying themselves? Children born
before their parents? Glaring stupid errors? Trivial errors that "aren't
worth fixing"? Things that look awful on your browser? Tell us!
Check your pictures!
And those of your relatives. Almost all the descriptions
of the pictures on this site were
received second hand. Where are the people in the pictures? What are they
doing? Is the date correct? Is there a date at all? The "1930's" is far
superior to "Date Unknown". Are the links back to the people pages actually
the people in the picture (a common error on our part).
Check all the pictures!
There are some pictures on the site that aren't connected to people, like
people's homes or farmsteads. Is the information on those pages correct?
Are there glaring errors on other pages? There are a lot of neat pictures
on the site, it's worth taking a look at them even if they're distant
relations.
Bring your relatives!
Have a relative without a computer? Bring them to take a look at the site
and have a look through it. Ask them the questions above. What do they
have to say about the site? What concerns do they have?
Comment! Suggest! Criticize!
Please, please, please! This site just won't work without your input.
Are there spelling errors? Great ideas that we've missed? Things that you
don't want to see? Let us know!
Send us your life story.
We're collecting brief (about 300-500 word) life stories from everyone we
can, but getting people to submit their own is like pulling teeth! It's
really not that hard! Take a look at pages for ideas on what we want.
Send us a photo!
Send us a most recent picture of yourself or your family. Scanning the
photos is time consuming, but you're guaranteed to get a better picture here
than the fuzzy or non-existent photos we have now.
Start collecting pictures
Eventually, we'll get a chance to get out to your home and drag the scanner
along, or you'll have a chance to visit us at home. Take a look through
those old photos in the album or cardboard box and figure out who, when,
and where.
Not just photos.
Old documents, letters, old school reports, recipes, poetry, manifestos, you name it, if it's
precious to the family and you want it preserved, we want to copy it.
Find those videos. Find those old home videos of your children.
Consider making copies and storing them in a safe place (away from fire or
theft). We don't have the equipment today, but soon we'll be trying to
collect these videos as well.
Do a bit of research.
Know someone who knows something about the family? Have a clue here or
there? Take a look around and see what you can find.
Send us contacts.
Is there a distant relative who is keeping records about the family? We
probably don't know about them yet. Send them our phone number or address,
and tell them what we're doing, or send us their address so we can contact
them. We're already mailing around the world, from Newfoundland to British
Columbia to England to
Denmark to Scotland to the United States to gather more information.
Come share the project.
This project is by no means ours. It belongs to all of us. We'd welcome
help from anyone with the time. This help could come in the form of setting
up and performing interviews, photo collection and scanning, web page
design, Java programming assistance, administrative assistance, or just
raising awareness
