"My name is Jackson Goins; I was born in Hamilton County, Tennessee in 1851; I am fifty-seven years old; I am the uncle of Marshall Goins; his father, Joe Goins, was my brother; I have applied for participation in this fund; I do not remember my application number; I have heard the testimony of Marshall Goins, and it is substantially true to my best knowledge. I have not further testimony to help prove this claim.
Jackson [X] Goins
Dayton, Tenn, June 23,
1908"
His nephew, Marshall Goins gave a deposition on the same
date:
My name is Marshall Goins; I
was born in Wilson County, Tennessee; I am twenty-eight years old; I claim my
Indian blood through my father and mother; my father's name is Joe Goins; my
mother's maiden name was Sally Goins.
My father was born in Hamilton County, Tennessee. I do not know what year he was born; my
mother was born in Dekalb County, Tennessee.
I do not know what year. My
mother claimed her Indian blood through her father and mother. My father claimed his Indian blood through
his mother. I do not know where my
grandfather and grandmother were born, but I think they were born in the state
of Tennessee. I do not know when they
were born. Neither my father or mother
were enrolled, but I think my grandfather, Nathan Goins was enrolled. Neither my father or mother or grandparents
were never considered as a member of an Indian tribe and never received any
money. I have never received any
money. I never heard of any of my
ancestors being held as slaves. I first
learned of my Indian blood from my mother, and she said I was part Cherokee,
but she never said how much. My father
and ancestors through [whom] I claim were regarded as white people in the
community in which they lived. I am
regarded as a white man and associate with white people. I was twenty-one years old when my mother
died and five years old when my father died.
My father and mother never had an Indian name. I never heard of any ancestors through whom I claim as having an
Indian name. My grandmother on my
father's side resided in Hamilton County, Tennessee in 1851. I do not know why my ancestors were never
enrolled.

Pleasant Goins, was born about 1793 in Tennessee,
according to "Our
Kith and Kin" by Helen B. Wasson quoting Miss Fannie Littleton
and Miss Louisiana Littleton of Point, Louisiana. They reported that he was "about 75 years old when he died
about 1863." Ella Lafay "Fay"
Bullock Kitchens, a descendant researcher of Monroe, Louisiana, suggests that
he was born about 1799 in Tennessee or Virginia. James Thomas Ballard places his date of birth as about 1788.
"Pleasant Gowen" was married to Temperance
Cooper November 27, 1821, according to Dallas County Marriage Book D, page
76.. "Pleasant Gowing"
appeared in Shelby County, Alabama October 20, 1832 where he received land in
Section 6, Township 19, Range 1 West.
The land grant was recorded in "Tuscaloosa Land Office Register," according
to "Old
Tuskaloosa Land Office Records & Military Warrants, 1821-1855"
by Marilyn Davis Barefield.
“Temperance Cooper Gowen” was enumerated in the 1840
census of Taledega County, Alabama along with a son and a daughter.
Pleasant Goins was remarried in Tuscaloosa County to
Louisa Alice "Ally" Webb "of Georgia" August 25, 1846. “Pleasant Goings was married to L. Webb
August 24, 1846 in Shelby County, Alabama,” according to the research of Gay
Kinney. Louisa Alice “Ally” Webb was
the daughter of John Webb who died there about 1860, according to the research
of Fay Kitchens.
"Pleasant Gownes" obtained additional land
there in 1854. He was reported to be a
stagedriver. He died there about
1863.
“Loualley Gowings” was enumerated as the head of
Household 236-236 in the 1870 census of Autauga County, page 27, living in

Elizabeth Gooing, daughter of Pleasant Goins and Temperance Cooper Goins was born about 1822. She was married January 7, 1839 to Robert R. Davidson, according to Autauga County Marriage Book 1, page 53. Pleasant Goins gave his consent to the marriage.
Andrew Martin Gooing, son of Pleasant Goins and
Temperance Cooper Goins, was born November 23, 1823 in Dallas County. He was enlisted June 13, 1846 in the U.S.
Army at Mobile, Alabama for one year's service in the Mexican War as a private
in Capt. William Coleman's Company in the First Alabama Regiment under Col. J.
R. Coffey. His service record describes
him as "5'10," fair complexion, black eyes and light hair." He was discharged at New Orleans May 27,
1847.
Helen B. Wasson wrote,
"The next record we have
of Andrew Martin Gooing is an affidavit, dated September 27, 1847, sworn to in
Marion, Perry County, Alabama, preparatory to filing for bounty land.
On
October 27, 1847, in a letter headed Perryville, Alabama, he requested that his
warrant for bounty land be sent "to my address at Maplesville, Bibb
County, Alabama." On April 25,
1848, he was awarded 160 acres of land in Bibb County.
On November 30,
1848, Andrew M. Gooing married Miss Areminta Barnett, according to File 2020,
Perry County, Ala-bama marriage records.
She was the daughter of Thomas Bar-nett and Phebary Bishop Barnett.
According
to the 1850 census, Andrew and Areminta Gooing resided in Perry County, Alabama
in Perryville Beat, in the eastern part of the county. Andrew is listed as being 26 years old, a
pumpmaker, Areminta is 24, and they have one child, William, age 1.
In
1858, the estate of Thomas Barnett, Areminta's father, was settled. In Minute Book I 1858, page 43, State of
Alabama, Perry County, we find Areminta and her husband mentioned. Their part
was $1,272.95. Having received $342.53
prior to the settlement, were due $990.42.
Shortly
thereafter, Andrew and Areminta Gooing came to Lou-isiana, we suppose, with a
caravan of settlers. They first lived
at Old Shiloh in Union Parish. Emest
Edward Ballard, grand-son of Andrew M. Gooing, told me that Andrew M. Gooing
had a gin, a blacksmith shop, and that he was a carpenter.
Martha
A. Gooing Ballard's letter states: 'Father was a farmer, wood workman, a fine
blacksmith, and a mason.'
We
have a certified copy of Conveyance Record K, page 190‑-191, Union Parish
Deed, dated February 27, 1863, a deed from Alfred Honeycutt to 'A. M. Goings'
for 360 acres of land. This deed confirms the following story that was told to
me. Alfred Honeycutt had a son, Bob, who was of army age. Honey-cutt could not
bear to see his son to go to war. He
told Andrew M. Gooing he would deed 360 acres to him if he would take the boy's
place. Andrew agreed to do this. On the day of his en-listment, the deed was
made. They moved from the Old Shiloh to
the Honeycutt place on DeLoutre. That is
how the Ballard homeplace was acquired.
Following
is Andrew M. Gooing's Confederate States war record, taken from Booth's 'Records of
Louisiana Confederate Soldiers and Commands,' Book 1, Page 44:
'Guing,
Andrew M. Pvt. Co. I, 31st Infantry.
Enlisted February 27, 1863, Monroe, Louisiana. Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War, captured and paroled at
Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 4, 1863.
The
photostat of Andrew M. Gooing's CSA record shows the same dates as above. It
shows he enlisted for three years, or the war. There are two interesting notes;
'he has never been paid,' and 'the duplicate roll carries his name as Going
instead of Gooing.'
Martha
A. Gooing Ballard's letter gives us the following: 'Father went through the
Vicksburg hard battle and was wounded in head and shoulder which shortened his
life . . .'
Aunt
Rosalie Ballard White has heard Areminta Gooing say that during the war, in the
middle of the night, some Yankees came and burned the cotton gin and cotton
bales. They took all their chickens,
livestock and bed covering. [The gin
was on that part of the place they call the 'old sand field.']
Andrew
M. Gooing returned from the war on a horse someone had let him have. It is said he was so ill when he returned
that he could hardly climb down from the horse. He died December 9, 1867.
On
September 14, 1957, I visited Andrew M. Gooing's grave at Old Tennessee
Graveyard in Union Parish, Louisiana.
E. E. Ballard took me there. The
gravestone is Masonic, shaped like a pyramid and in perfect condition. On the
side opposite the Masonic insignia there is sculptured an ear of corn. The front of the stone is marked 'Andrew M.
Gooing Born November 15, 1823, Died December 9, 1867. Erected by his Wife.'
Andrew
M. Gooing deeded the 360 acres to William Sanders Gooing, his son whom he had
taught the carpentry trade. Wil-liam took over the shop after his father's
death. E. E. Ballard told me that
'Uncle Will' could build anything and was espe-cially good at cabinet
work. He also stated that William S. Gooing
built the Gus Hartman House at Farmerville.
In 1890, William S. Gooing was murdered by a man named Deas. His death, we are told, caused Areminta, his
mother to grieve for him for the rest of her life. William S. Gooing's grave is adjacent to his father's and is
marked.
William
S. Gooing left the place to Martha Angeline Gooing, our grandmother, who had
married John Ballard. This caused
friction in the family, so Martha A. and John Ballard put the land up for sale
and John Ballard bought it in.
Areminta
made her home with Martha and John Ballard.
I have heard my father speak of her many times and said he had ridden
into town with her to get her pension check.
This
pension check was a great puzzlement to me. I had been told it was a CSA
widow's pension. I made many fruitless efforts to verify it. The CSA Pension
Act was not approved until 1898 ‑ then, one day, upon rereading Martha A.
Ballard's letter, it occurred to me that perhaps it was a widow's pension from
Andrew's service in the Mexican War.
This proved to be true, and as a consequence, I was able to acquire from
National Archives Andrew's military records which gave me much valuable
information.
Areminta
Barnett Gooing was well educated. We
are told she was a school teacher. She
was a Baptist; her bible was beautifully kept, and she wrote exceedingly well.
We
found the following in her handwriting:
"Areminta
Gooing Aug.
the 9, 1900
Back
to the old home viewing scenes of childhood
There
is where I know no care or pain
There
in my childish glee
Under
the woodland tree
0, how
I long to go to the old home once again
Though
I am old now,
I love
to linger on happy thoughts of bygone days
When
through the [illegible], I roamed
Far
from my dear old home
Gathering
the scented flowers that grew along the way
Now I
am alone, no loving hands ... "
That
is all that is on the scrap of paper, but it does give one insight to the
character of Areminta Barnett Gooing.
Areminta
died March 4, 1902, while she was visiting in the home of her daughter, Phebery
Jane Gooing Tugwell [Mrs. George Tugwell].
She is buried at Blanchard Springs, Ar-kansas, where she died. I have been told her grave is marked. [Her grave was found in 1990 by Carroll
Heard Goyne, Jr, Foundation Editorial Boardmember of Shreveport. It is located in an almost abandoned wooded
cemetery in Section 32, Township 19S, Range 3W in Union County. The cemetery is about 1/4 mile northwest of
the present Blanchard Springs Church. A
smaller wooded cemetery is about 1/2 mile south of this one, according to James
Thomas Ballard.]
Blanchard
Springs is in Union County, Arkansas.
The old house in which Areminta Gooing, Martha A. and John Ballard
lived, burned in November, 1955. At the
time it was occupied by E. E. Ballard and his wife, Ossie. The 360 acres of the old home place
presently belong to E. E. Ballard."
Arementa Barnett Gooing was the daughter of Thomas
Barnett and Pheraby Bishop Barnett, according to the research of a
great-grandson, James Thomas Ballard, a Foundation member of Vicksburg,
Mississippi. He wrote:
"Andrew Martin Gooing came to Union Parish as a
member of the Thomas Barnett family.
Thomas Barnett was born March 6, 1786 and died in Perry County, Alabama
March 3, 1857, leaving a widow and seven daughters and a substantial estate,

William Gowen born in 1830
William Gowen, only known son of Martin Gowen and Rachel
Simpson Gowen, was born in 1830 in Alabama, probably Jackson County. He was married at age 16, wife's name
Elizabeth.
William Gowen was the only member of the family to head
a household in Jackson County in the 1860 census. His household, No. 71-71, Division 4, was enumerated June 4,
1860:
"Gowan, William 30,
born in Alabama, blacksmith, $65
personal
property
Elizabeth 31, born in Alabama, illiterate
Alivera 14, born in Alabama"
In the Jackson County Court records, term of October
1861, it was reported that "William Gowan" of District 17 had volunteered
to serve in the Mead Company of the Twentieth Alabama Infantry Regiment and had
left his home in October 1861. The
record states that he had left behind "his wife, age 35, a daughter, age
16 and a son, age 10", according to "Valley Leaves of Alabama," a
genealogical publication. Elizabeth
Gowen participated in a distribution of $700 worth of provisions which were
doled out in District 17 by the county.
William Gowan appeared in the Jackson County Court records, term of November 1861. The record stated that "William Gowan of Nashville, Alabama" was a volunteer in Confederate service and that he had left a wife and one child, age 11, who were in need of assistance. It is assumed that Alivera Gowan, at 16 by this time, had married or was away with relatives.
On October 13, 1862 the Jackson County Court approved a
list of Confederate volunteers from Jackson County whose families were in need
of assistance. "William
Gowin" was included in the list from District 17 of the county. The record mentioned that his wife and one
child were left. They were assisted in
a share of "50 sacks of salt" provided by the state of Alabama,
according to "Valley
Leaves of Alabama," Volume 8.
Apparently William Gowen died during the Civil War.
"Elizabeth Gowans," widow, age 41, appeared in the 1870 census of Jackson County, living in District 4, Subdivision 1 in Long Island, Alabama. The household, No. 72-73, was enumerated as:

to John Thomas Robinson, son of Joe T. Robinson.
Twenty years later tragedy overtook the Robinson family
as described by Peggy Ann Davis Jones White, granddaughter of John Thomas
Robinson and Lear Belle Adams Robinson:
"Early in 1924 there was
an outbreak of measles in East Texas. Maudie Robinson took the measles first,
with the measles spreading from one Robinson child to another until Lear
Robinson, who had just given birth to Rowena Elvira got them. Lear, being very
weak from doctoring a houseful of sick children, giving birth to the baby and
then taking the measles became very, very ill. Tom Robinson went into Alba,
which is located on the Rains‑Wood County line to get a doctor for Lear.
Having ridden horseback into Alba in the cold February night rain, Tom Robinson
was drenched and freezing when he returned home.
Lear Belle Adams Robinson died
February 25, 1924, according to BVS File 6525. John Thomas Robinson died two days later on February 27, 1924.
Rowena Elvira Robinson died several days later. All died from measles and
pneumonia. All three are buried next to the grave of Melissa Belle Gowin Adams
in the Colony Cemetery.
After the deaths of Tom and
Lear Robinson, their children went to stay with various relatives. Robert
Ewell, who was known as Buster; his twin, William Ewele, who was known as
Johnson; Archie; Lillard; Clyde and Claude went to stay with their grandmother,
Melissa Belle Gowin Adams, who lived nearby.
Times were hard and money was
short for Melissa Belle Gowin Adams, who already had two or three teenage sons
at home to feed. Therefore, it was decided that the four youngest boys would be
taken to an orphanage near Lubbock, Texas. It is now believed this was the
Milam's Orphans' Home which burned to the ground shortly after the boys arrived
there. All records were reportedly destroyed
in the fire. The four boys were then
taken from Lubbock to the Children's Home in Amarillo, Texas. The boys arrived
in Amarillo in May 1925.
Records from the Children's
Home show James Clyde Robinson was taken from the home in July 1925 by Mr. and
Mrs. H. J. Clemmer of Dalhart, Texas.
Archie Green Robinson and his twin Joseph Lillard Robinson were taken
from the home in December 1925 by John B. and Maggie G. Helm Davis of Hale
County, Texas. Records also show that
Claude Robinson was taken from the home by his aunt, Mrs. M. M. Swindell, Rt.
1, Wilson, Texas, however Matilda Swindell, who was an aunt of Tom Robinson and
a great aunt of Claude Robinson had died in December 1926 in Lamar County,
Texas. Claude Robinson's widow informed this writer in June 1991 that she had
never heard Claude mention an Aunt Matilda; she also told me that Claude was
raised by a Mr. and Mrs. King in Hale County Texas.
In May 1929 while on a hunting
trip near the home of their grandmother, Melissa Belle Gowin Adams in Rains
County Robert Newele "Buster" Robinson was accidentally shot and
killed by his twin brother, William Newele "Johnson" Robinson. "
Buster" was buried beside his parents and sister in Colony Cemetery.
The remaining eight Robinson
children were reunited in the mid 1930's. All are now deceased except for Clyde
who this writer has never met. It is believed that he lives somewhere in
California in 1993."
