                                               ==O==

James Jackson Goen was born in South Carolina March 15, 1811, according to his tombstone as recorded in "Nacogdoches County Cemetery Records."  He arrived in Nacogdoches County about 1850.

The 1850 census of Nacogdoches County recorded that James Jackson Goen, age 23, single and a carpenter, was born in South Carolina in 1827.  He was living in the household of Constantine Hardeman, No. 45-45, a farmer who had been born in South Carolina.

On February 2, 1854 he was married to Miss Martha F. A. Thomason, daughter of David Thomason and Martha Jane Hamil Thomason, according to Nacogdoches County Marriage Book B, page 159.  B. E. Shavers, minister of the gospel, performed the ceremony.  David Thomason was born in Virginia in 1796 and Martha Jane Hamil Thomason was born January 5, 1809.  They had arrived in Nacogdoches County in 1839 while Texas was a republic.

Later that year, on October 3, 1854, James Jackson Goen purchased 200 acres of land located 17 miles east of Nacogdoches at a sheriff's sale.  Three months later, he had an opportunity to make a profit.  On January 19, 1855 James Jackson Goen sold to Peter B. Fewel of Nacogdoches the 200 acres of land for $100, according to Deed Book L, page 590.  Fewel gave him $25 in cash and a note for $75.  James Jackson Goen posted bond to guarantee title.

The household of James Jackson Goen, No. 529-529, appeared in the 1860 census of Nacogdoches County as:

"Goen,                       Jackson                47, born in Georgia, farmer

                                                                           $1,774 personal property

                                       Martha                31, born in Tennessee

                                       Bettey                    6, born in Texas

                                       Durham                 3, born in Texas"

No explanation can be made for the discrepancy between the 1850 and the 1860 census returns in the age of James Jackson Goen nor in his place of birth.  In 1862 he enlisted in the Texas Third Brigade during the Civil War.  He was also a member of Company H, Seventeenth Texas Cavalry Regiment, C.S.A.  He was included in a voter registration list of precinct 3 in Nacogdoches County in 1867.  In the registration he stated that he had lived in Nacogdoches County about 17 years.

On January 6, 1868 James Jackson Goen purchased 135 acres located 12 miles east of Nacogdoches from Amanda Johnson at 50c an acre for $67.50, according to Nacogdoches County Deed Book Q, page 1.

James Jackson Goen died September 19, 1887 and was buried in Thomason Cemetery near the Melrose community in Nacogdoches County.  He was buried near his father-in-law, David Thomason who died in 1877.  Martha Jane Hamil Thomason died in October 1899.

"M. F. Gowen," along with her son, "J. D. Gowen," appeared in the 1890 tax list of the county, according to "Index of 1890 Tax List of Nacogdoches County, Texas" by Carolyn Ericson.

Thomason Goen applied for a Confederate Widow's Pension and was initially denied.  Later she received Pension No. 10168.  In her pension application she stated that he had lived in Nacogdoches County since 1839.  "Martha Goyen," believed to be Martha F. Very Little is told of the Gowen family in the sketchy county records of Red River County.  Gene Bowers, Clarksville, identified as the "unofficial” historian of Red River County in 1959, was able to furnish very litlle information.  He served as county clerk for that county for 25 years before his retirement and the same length term was served by his father and grandfather before him in the same office.  He recorded:

"Wooten, the shingle man, shot and killed Gowing out at Stone's old mill on Wednesday, September 7, 1881."

The "Clarksville Northern-Standard," published by Col. Charles DeMorse in Clarksville from 1842 until 1885, carried a news story in the December 29, 1882 edition of the paper bearing on the murder.  The newspaper spelled the victim's name as "Goyne."

The District Court convicted A.J. Wootten on manslaughter charges on December 12, 1882, according to the legal records of the county, and Judge R. R. Games of the Sixth Judicial District sentenced him to two years in the state penitentiary.

Whether the murder victim was a relative of Jeremiah B. Nunley Gowen is unknown.  Mrs. F. L. Woodward of Rox-ton, Texas reported that on Major S. P. Gowan attended a ball held in Clarksville on October 24, 1836.  The first house was built in Clarksville in 1834 and it became a town in 1837.
