Jesse Whitmire (W6/1.3), son of Stephen Whitmire (W7/1.1) and Mary Porter Whitmire (P7/1.1), was born in Pendleton District in 1789.  He was married February 3, 1809 in Woodville, Mississippi to Nancy Durden (D6/3.4), according to Wilkinson County, Mis­sissippi Marriage Book BB, page 98.  The 16-year-old bride, the daughter of John An­thony Durden (D7/1.3), was born in 1792 on Creek Indian lands.  The area was included in Baldwin County, Georgia when it was organized in 1803, and it was included in Mor­gan County when it was formed out of Baldwin County in 1807.  The marriage bond was recorded January 18, 1809 in Book BB, page 88.

 

John Anthony Durden (D7/1.3) was born in 1762 in Dobbs County, North Carolina, accord­ing to the research of Richard Norman Kyle (K1/1.2), a descendant of Kennewick, Wash­ington.  He is believed to be descended from John Durden, Jr. (D8/1.1), John Durden (D9/1.1), Jacob Durden, Jr. (D10/1.1), Jacob Durden (D11/1.1) and Stephen Durden (D12/.1).

 

Jesse Whitmire (W6/1.3) and Nancy Durden Whitmire (D6/3.4) followed John Anthony Dur­den (D7/1.1) in a move to eastern St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana in 1810, arriving there in December of that year and settling on adjoining land.  "John Durdino filed a claim of land by settlement Aug. 1810," and "Jesse Whitmiar filed a claim of land by settlement Dec. 1810," according to "Claims West of Pearl River."  Later when Washing­ton Parish was organized from St. Tammany they were located in the new parish. They were joined there in 1812 by his brother-in-law, William Hickman, Jr. (H6/1.1) who had married Sarah Whitmire (W6/1.2), his sister.

 

Jesse Whitmire (W6/1.3) served in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Louisiana Regiments in the War of 1812, according to a letter written March 30, 1965 by Millie Franklin, Whitmire researcher of Vidor, Texas.  He appeared as a private on the muster roll of Captain William Beckham's company, Thirteenth Regiment, Louisiana Militia from Decem­ber 23, 1814 to January 31, 1815 at New Orleans.  On March 10, 1815 his company was stationed in St. Tammany Parish, according to the company's muster roll.

 

On October 29, 1814 Jesse Whitmire (W6/1.3) deeded to Joseph Parmer "land in Bogalusa township, where I now live, lying on the south side of Boque Losa, adjoining John Dar­dinos," according to Washington Parish Deed Book A1, page 172.  He posted a $500 bond to insure that a grant from the U.S. government would be forthcoming, according to the deed which was recorded February 10, 1814.  The city of Bogalusa, Louisiana is now lo­cated on this land, according to Audrey Helan Murphy Schneider (M2/1.1).

 

Jesse Whitmire (W6/1.3) was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1820 census of St. Tammany Parish:

 

        "Whitmire, Jesse        white male      26-45   three foreign born,

                                white female    26-45   not naturalized.

                                white male      16-26

                                white male       0-10

                                white male       0-10

                                white female     0-10

                                white male       0-10

                                white male       0-10

                                white male       0-10"

 

Later Jesse Whitmire (W6/1.3) moved to Mississippi.  A son was born in Hinds County, Mississippi January 7, 1825, and a daughter was born in 1829 in Rankin County, Missis­sippi.  No Whitmire families were enumerated in the 1830 census of Louisiana. Jesse Whitmire (W6/1.3), appeared as the head of the only Whitmire household in Mississippi in the 1830 census of Rankin County.  The family was rendered as:

He appeared on the 1831 and 1832 tax lists of Hinds and adjoining Madison County, Mis­sissippi.  He was mentioned in the will of his father written in April 1831 as the re­cipient of fifty dollars.

 

Jesse Whitmire (W6/1.3) and his son John Whitmire (W5/3.2) sold land in Simpson Coun­ty, Mississippi February 28, 1837:

 

"The State of Mississippi}

Simpson County           } 

 

Know all men by these presents that we Jesse Whitmire and John Whitmire of the state aforesaid and County of Rankin hath this day bargained sold conveyed and re­leased a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the State of Missis­sippi and County of Rankin and known by the num­bers as follows to wit: South West Half of South East Quarter of Section twenty-nine, Township three in Range three East containing Eighty acres more or less to Stephenson Smith of Simpson in and for the sum of seven hundred and fifty dollars to us in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged which lands we the said Jesse Whitmire and John Whitmire doth warrant and forever defend un­to the said Stephenson Smith with all the privileges premises and appurtenances there­unto belonging whatsoever from our­selves our heirs executors and all other persons claiming the same to the said Stephenson Smith his heirs and assigns forever in wit­ness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 28th February, 1837.

Shortly afterward Jesse Whitmire (W6/1.3) removed to Texas arriving there in January 1839, according to General Land Office records.  He applied for a land grant and it was approved in Jasper County, Texas January 5, 1840.  Conditional Third Class Land Grant No. 121 for 640 acres was issued to him August 1, 1842 by the Board of Land Com­missioners of Jasper County.  On August 1, 1842 320 acres were patented to him, leav­ing an additional 320 to be selected later.

 

He was recorded in the 1840 tax list of Jasper County along with four sons, William Whitmire (W5/3.1), John L. Whitmire (W5/3.2), Elias Whitmire (W5/3.5) and Henry Whit­mire (W5/3.7).  Jesse Whitmire (W6/1.3) sold his 320 acres located on Big Rock Creek "adjoining the survey of William Whitmire" to John L. Baker for $200 December 6, 1844, according to Newton County Deed Book D, page 381.

 

Billye Hickman Gillette wrote in 1971, "The Whitmires were on the 1840 tax roll of Jasper County, the 1841-42-43-44, but not the 1845.  I have a huge map that shows where they had land in Jasper County.  Elias, C. W, Fannie, William and another Elias were original settlers there, also Hilliard Durden [D6/3.2)]."

 

He sold some land in Jasper County in 1846 and died there at Buna January 10, 1847 at the age of 58.  No probate was recorded for him.

 

Nancy Durden Whitmire (D6/3.4) appeared at age 56 in the 1850 census of San Augustine County, Texas in the household of her son, David Kension Whitmire (W5/4.6).  She died October 17, 1858 in Angelina County, Texas, according to Elias Lowe.

William Whitmire (W5/3.1), son of Jesse Whitmire (W6/1.3) and Nancy Durden Whitmire (D6/3.4), was born September 7, 1811 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, according to Patricia Ann "Patty" Bennett McGinty (B1/1.2).

 

He was married about 1834 to Elizabeth Smith (S5/1.1) who was born in Mississippi in 1817.  He moved to Texas with his father in 1839 and applied for a land grant.  It was approved, and Conditional Third Class Certificate No. 122 for 640 acres was issued to him January 5, 1840.  He was listed as a taxpayer in the 1840 tax list of Jasper Coun­ty.  He received final approval of his land grant August 1, 1842.

 

He was remarried to Elizabeth Crockett (C5/1.1) about 1843.  She was born in Missis­sippi in 1825.  He was included in the 1845 tax list of Houston County.  He was enu­merated as the head of Household 198-198 in the 1850 census of San Augustine County, Texas:

  He was a resident of Jasper County August 2, 1853 and signed his name "William Whit­meyer."  In 1860 they lived in Orange County, Texas.

Sibley Durden Whitmire (W4/1.1), son of William Whitmire (W5/3.1) and his first wife, was born in Mississippi in 1835.  [Reddick Sibley and William S. Sibley appeared in Washington Parish, Louisiana deed records in 1836.]  He was married May 12, 1862 to Julia Ann Cooper (C4/1.1), according to Jasper County Marriage Book A, page 155.  She was born in 1846 in Louisiana.

 

She "ran away with a man with eight children," according to Eva Lee Hager (H2/1.1), a descendant of Ada, Oklahoma.  "Mrs. Julia Ann Cooper" was married October 17, 1869 to Julius Claybar, according to Orange County Marriage Book B.  Following the divorce Sibley Durden Whitmire (W4/1.1), a Baptist minister, was remarried to Laura Ann Brown (B4/1.1) about 1869, according to Eva Lee Hager (H2/1.1).  She was born August 13, 1850 in Georgia.

 

They appeared in the 1870 census of Madison County, Texas, Household 74-77, as:

 

        "Whitmire, Sibley       29, born in Mississippi, farmer

                   Ann          19, born in Georgia"

 

He received a land grant of 104 acres in Madison County May 20, 1879.  He sold the land April 8, 1889 to Joseph Mott for $15.

He preached for 38 years.  Later they lived in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma.  She filed Confederate Widows' Pension Application No. 7472 there which was denied, according to Oklahoma Pensions Records in Oklahoma City.  She died in Madison County October 11, 1933, according to Texas BVS File 24936.

Sarah A. Whitmire (W3/1.2), daughter of Sibley Durden Whitmire (W4/1.1) and Laura Ann Brown Whitmire (B4/1.1), was born in 1870, probably in Madison County.  She appeared in the 1880 census of her father's household as a 10-year-old.

 

Letha A. Whitmire (W3/1.3), daughter of Sibley Durden Whitmire (W4/1.1) and Laura Ann Brown Whitmire (B4/1.1), was born in 1872, probably in Madison County.  She appeared in the 1880 census of her father's household as an eight-year-old.

 

William M. Whitmire (W3/1.4), son of Sibley Durden Whitmire (W4/1.1) and Laura Ann Brown Whitmire (B4/1.1), was born in October 1874.  He appeared in the 1880 census of his father's household as a five-year-old.  He reappeared as "William W. Whitmire, age 25" in the 1900 census of his father's household in Madison County.

 

Susan Lettie Whitmire (W3/1.5), daughter of Sibley Durden Whitmire (W4/1.1) and Laura Ann Brown Whitmire (B4/1.1), was born in 1877.  She appeared in the 1880 census of her father's household as a three-year-old.  She was married about 1895, husband's name Hager.  In 1969 she, at the age of 92, lived in Ada, Oklahoma.

        Eva Lee Hager           (H2/1.1)        born October 19, 1902

 

Eva Lee Hager (H2/1.1), daughter of Susan Lettie Whitmire Hager (W3/1.1), was born Oc­tober 19, 1902.  She wrote from Ada, in 1969 that William Whitmire (W5/3.1) owned land near Cold Springs, Texas.  Eva Lee Hager (H2/1.1) taught at Southern Methodist Univer­sity for 30 years and lived in retirement in Ada in 1984.

 

Jesse Elias Whitmire (W3/1.6), son of Sibley Durden Whitmire (W4/1.1) and Laura Ann Brown Whitmire (B4/1.1), was born in October 1878 in Madison County.  He appeared as a two-year-old in the 1880 census of his father's household.  He reappeared in the 1900 enumeration of his father's household at age 21.

 

Viola Whitmire (M3/1.7), daughter of Sibley Durden Whitmire (W4/1.1) and Laura Ann Brown Whitmire (B4/1.1), was born in August 1885 in Madison County.  She appeared as a 14-year-old in the 1900 census of her father's household.

 

Henry Bryant Whitmire (W3/1.8), son of Sibley Durden Whitmire (W4/1.1) and Laura Ann Brown Whitmire (B4/1.1), was born in Madison County January 6, 1888, according to Hen­ry Earl Whitmire (W1/1.1), a grandson.  He appeared as a 12-year-old in the 1900 cen­sus of his father's household.  He was married about 1911 to Ada Lambert (L3/1.1) who was born August 16, 1894 to F. E. Lambert (L4/1.1) and Sara Anna Lambert.  In 1915 they lived in Kenewa, Oklahoma.  He died December 27, 1964 and was buried in Madison­ville, Texas.  She died December 5, 1982 and was buried beside her husband.

Aulcie Whitmire (W2/8.1), son of Henry Bryant Whitmire (W3/1.7) and Ada Lambert Whit­mire (L3/1.1), was born May 4, 1915 in Kenewa.  He was married September 29, 1935 at Normangee, Texas to Nova Scotia Hamilton (H2/1.1) who was born November 27, 1913. She died August 6, 1966 at Dawson, Texas.

 

Children born to Aulcie Whitmire (W2/8.1) and Nova Scotia Hamilton Whitmire (H2/1.1) include:

Henry Earl Whitmire (W1/1.1), son of Aulcie Whitmire (W2/8.1) and Nova Scotia Hamilton Whitmire (H2/1.1), was born November 3, 1938 at Normangee.  He was married June 6, 1959 to Kathlene Glen-Walker (G1/1.1) who was born August 30, 1941 to William Glen-Walker (G2/1.1) and Flore Mae Eddins Glen-Walker (E2/1.1). In 1985 they lived at Mis­souri City, Texas.

Permelia Whitmire (W4/1.2), daughter of William Whitmire (W5/3.1) and Elizabeth Crock­ett Whitmire (C5/1.1), was born in 1838 in Mississippi.  She appeared as a 12-year-old in the household of her father in the 1850 census.  She was married April 26, 1860 to Hiram Adams (A4/1.1), according to Orange County, Texas Marriage Book A, page 73.  He was born in 1831 in Louisiana.

 

Elizabeth M. Whitmire (W4/1.3), daughter of William Whitmire (W5/3.1) and Elizabeth Crockett Whitmire (C5/1.1), was born April 7, 1844 in San Augustine County.  She was married December 11, 1859 in Orange County to James Neal (N4/1.1), according to McGin­ty research.  He was born in 1836 in Georgia.  She was remarried about 1879 to John L. Gibbs (G4/1.1) who was born August 18, 1840.  They lived in Houston, Texas.  She was buried in Davis Cemetery, Tyler County, Texas, according to Sue Moore, a great-grand­daughter who in 1969 lived in Silsbee, Texas.

Elias Woods Gibbs (G3/1.1), son of John L. Gibbs (G4/1.1) and Elizabeth M. Whitmire Neal Gibbs (W4/1.4), was born March 17, 1881.  He was married December 28, 1899 to Mary Alice Davis (D3/1.1).  He died November 8, 1957.

 

William Franklin Gibbs (G3/1.2), son of John L. Gibbs (G4/1.1) and Elizabeth M. Whit­mire Neal Gibbs (W4/1.4), was born May 12, 1884.  He was married to Mary Elliot (E3/­1.1) May 2, 1906.  He died March 25, 1963.

 

Rosie Gibbs (G3/1.4), son of John L. Gibbs (G4/1.1) and Elizabeth M. Whitmire Neal Gibbs (W4/1.4), was born about 1887.  She was married January 15, 1904 to J. Austin Davis (D3/1.1).

 

John W. Whitmire (W4/1.4), son of William Whitmire (W5/3.1) and Elizabeth Crockett Whitmire (C5/1.1), was born in 1846 in San Augustine County.  He appeared as a four-year-old in the 1850 census of his father's household.  He was married about 1870 to Elizabeth Lilly (L4/1.1), according to Richard Norman Kyle (K1/1.2).  She was born in April 1846 in Mississippi.

John W. Whitmire (W4/1.4) died January 4, 1904, age 58 years, according to his tomb­stone in Antioch Cemetery, Jasper County.

Corbett Whitmire (W2/2.1), son of William A. Whitmire (W3/4.2) and Lucy Whitmire, was born in May 1894 in Jasper County.  He was married about 1919, wife's name Lola May. She was born in 1899 and died in 1957.  He died in 1975.  They were buried in Hillside Mausoleum, Port Neches, Texas.  Children born to Corbett Whitmire (W2/2.1) and Lola May Whitmire are unknown.

 

Clay Whitmire (W2/2.2), son of William A. Whitmire (W3/4.2) and Lucy Whitmire, was born in August 1897 in Jasper County.  He appeared as a two-year-old in the 1900 cen­sus of his father's household and in the 1910 census as an 11-year-old.  He was mar­ried about 1918 to Florence Dryden (D2/1.1) who was born in Many, Louisiana in 1900.  In 1922 Clay Whitmire (W2/2.2) was a sawmill employee working for Peavy-Moore Lumber Company in Newton County.  On August 1, 1939 Florence Dryden Whitmire (D2/1.1) "of Hardin County, Texas" filed an affidavit for a birth certificate for her son Claude Whitmire (W1/2.2).

 

Children born to Clay Whitmire (W2/2.2) and Florence Dryden Whitmire (D2/1.1) include:

Iris Whitmire (W1/2.1), daughter of Clay Whitmire (W2/2.2) and Florence Dryden Whit­mire (D2/1.1), was born September 20, 1920.  She died January 6, 1922, according to her tombstone in Morse Cemetery, Buna.  She died of influenza in Newton County, ac­cording to Texas BVS File 2676.

 

Claude Whitmire (W1/2.2), "third child, two living," son of Clay Whitmire (W2/2.2) and Florence Dryden Whimire (D2/1.1), was born March 25, 1922, according to Newton County Birth Book P1, page 18.

 

John A. Whitmire (W2/2.3), son of William A. Whitmire (W3/4.2) and Lucy Whitmire, was born in 1901.  He was listed as a nine-year-old in the 1910 census of  his father's household.

 

Grace Whitmire (W2/2.4), daughter of William A. Whitmire (W3/4.2) and Lucy Whitmire, was born in 1905.  She appeared as a five-year-old in the 1910 census of Jasper Coun­ty.

 

William Whitmire (W2/2.5), son of William A. Whitmire (W3/4.2) and Lucy Whitmire, was born in 1907 in Jasper County.  He was enumerated as a three-year-old in 1910.

 

Annie Whitmire (W2/2.6), daughter of William A. Whitmire (W3/4.2) and Lucy Whitmire, was born in 1910 in Jasper County.  She appeared at age two months in the 1910 census there.

 

Ella Whitmire (W3/4.3), daughter of John W. Whitmire (W4/1.4) and Elizabeth Lilly Whitmire (L4/1.1), was born in 1875.  She appeared as a five-year-old in the census of 1880.

 

Rachel Whitmire (W3/4.4), daughter of John W. Whitmire (W4/1.4) and Elizabeth Lilly Whitmire (L4/1.1), was born in 1877.  She appeared as a three-year-old in the 1880 census of Jasper County.

 

James Whitmire (W3/4.5), son of John W. Whitmire (W4/1.4) and Elizabeth Lilly Whitmire (L4/1.1), was born in July 1879 in Jasper County.  He was listed as a 20-year-old in his father's household in the 1900 census of Orange County.

 

Elias Whitmire (W3/4.6), son of John W. Whitmire (W4/1.4) and Elizabeth Lilly Whit­mire (L4/1.1), was born December 25, 1881 in Jasper County.  He appeared as an 18-year-old in the 1900 census of his father's household in Orange County.  He was mar­ried in 1905 to S. Osceola Franklin (F3/1.1) who was born May 19, 1890, according to Jasper County Marriage Book F, page 281.  They appeared in the 1910 census of Jasper County, Enumer­ation District 63, page 113:

He died July 10, 1964 and was buried in Morse Cemetery in Buna.  Of S. Osceola Franklin Whitmire (F3/1.1) nothing more is known.

Mattie Whitmire (W3/4.7), daughter of John W. Whitmire (W4/1.4) and Elizabeth Lilly Whitmire (L4/1.1), was born in March 1883.  She appeared as a 16-year-old in the 1900 census of Orange County.

 

Orra Whitmire (W3/4.8), daughter of John W. Whitmire (W4/1.4) and Elizabeth Lilly Whitmire (L4/1.1), was born in July 1886.  She appeared as a 13-year-old in the 1900 census of Orange County,

 

Mary Whitmire (W4/1.5), daughter of William Whitmire (W5/3.1) and Elizabeth Crockett Whitmire (C5/1.1), was born in 1848 in San Augustine County.  She appeared as a two-year-old in the 1850 census of her father's household.  She was married October 2, 1869 to Larkin A. Richardson (L4/1.1), according to Jasper County Marriage Book A, page 261.  She died in 1886.

 

Barbara Whitmire (W4/1.6), daughter of William Whitmire (W5/3.1) and Elizabeth Crock­ett Whitmire (C5/1.1), was born about 1851, according to Price research.  McGinty re­search does not record this individual.  Of her nothing more is known.

 

Ellen Whitmire (W4/1.7), daughter of William Whitmire (W5/3.1) and Elizabeth Crockett Whitmire (C5/1.1), was born about 1854.  She was married October 6, 1870 to George Johnson (J4/1.1), according to Jasper County Marriage Book A, page 282.

 

Jesse Whitmire (W4/1.8), son of William Whitmire (W5/3.1) and Elizabeth Crockett Whit­mire (C5/1.1), was born in 1856 in Texas.  He was married October 7, 1874 to Sophronia Richardson (R4/1.2), according to Jasper County Marriage Book B, page 236. She was possibly a sister to Larkin A. Richardson (L4/1.1).

 

They appeared in the 1880 census of Limestone County, Texas, Enumeration District 96, page 36, precinct 6:
