To get to Glenbar Cemetery, from
Pima go west on US-70 past the Glenbar Gin, about milepost 328. The first road west of the Glenbar Gin is marked by three large boulders. Turn south onto that road,
cross the railroad tracks and then take an immediate left. You will see
the cemetery straight ahead. |

GLENBAR CEMETERY - by Wilma Carter Rhinehart The Glenbar Cemetery, previously called the Matthews Cemetery, is located at Glenbar, Graham County, Arizona. The records are kept at the Museum in Pima, Graham County, Arizona and at the Pima City Hall. The records for this cemetery were taken from: 1) the headstones in the cemetery, 2) from the Matthewsville Book of Remembrance, compiled by Laura McBride Smith and her sister Grace McBride Larson, 3) from the book of the Carter Pioneers of Provo, Utah, compiled by Arthur D. Coleman, and 4) from relatives that are still living. Most of the graves that were not marked were identified to me by my Uncle Alof Carter who was Bishop of Matthews Ward from 1923 to 1929. The land for the cemetery was donated by my Great Grandmother Polly Boss Matthews. Her husband, Joseph Matthews, the founder of Matthewsville, had been buried at the Old Pima Cemetery. When the bodies needed to be moved from that cemetery she wanted him to be buried on their homestead land. All of the graves in the Glenbar Cemetery of people who died before 1890 were brought from the Old Pima Cemetery. Anyone in the area could be buried there without any cost. It has always been kept in good condition by the children of the pioneers that were buried here. It is still being used. The first person to be buried in the cemetery was the daughter of William H. Wilson and Martha Jane Potter Matthews Wilson. Her name was Martha Elizabeth. She was born about 1890 and died when she was an infant. It is thought that her grave is just outside of the fence on the west side of the cemetery. |
I would like to thank Wilma Carter Rhinehart for generously providing me with copies of the funeral cards that have been kept on those buried in the Glenbar Cemetery. Although each of the cards provide varying degrees of information, every date, name and place is appreciated. The information in the following table has been taken from those cards and from the headstones. In some cases, there are discrepancies between the two. I've tried to note those discrepancies in the Comments section. There are also many unknowns in this cemetery and more funeral cards than burial markers. Where possible a photo has been taken of the headstone and linked to the individual's surname. Click on the surname of the individual to see the photo.
