At a court in Accomack, John Dennis is ordered to pay Mr Obedience Robins 24 lb tobacco, and goodwife Haynie 166 lb tobacco. February 19, 1634. William Mellinge and John Dennis appraised the goods of Mr Nicholas Throgmorton, granted to James Cook. August 8, 1636. John Dennis, 350 acres, scituated at great Wicocomoco, bounded on the northern parts with a branch of said river, on the southern part by a small branch, parting same from land of Thomas Gascogne and making this a neck of land. For transporting seven persons: Richard Parker, Christopher Walsgrave, Barbery Dennis, Robert Swanson, Thomas Long, Thomas Acties--a servant of Capt Stoner.

"John Dennis, Jr. died on 31 Sept 1652. Debts due to John Dennis Junr who dyed in Virginia at Jo'n Dennis Senr's house in Wicocomocoe the last day of July 1652. John Dennis Senr. upon Accot." 1652, July ... "Barbary Dennis, widow, to have comm. of admr. of estate of John Dennis, her husband, decd." 1653 ... "Whereas John Dennis Senr [sic--must be Jr.] doth owe unto Mr. Thomas Speke 300 lb tobacco, the court doth order that David Spiller, who married with the widow and administatrix of the said Dennis, shall within ten days make payment." (Northumberland County, VA, Abstracts) An inventory of the Goods of John Dennis Junr who dyed at Wicocomoco at John Dennis Senr the ultimo July 1652, apraised by Rich Budd, Jo Gresham and Jo Gamblin, sworne before George ffletcher the 4th Septem 1652. John Dennis Senr his account of john Dennis Junr his estate. The account of John Dennis adminstrator of all and singular the goods and chattels of John Dennis Junr deceased late whilest he lived of Great Wicocomocoe in the County of Northumberland and Colony of Virginia. Imprs this accountant and administrator doth charge himself with all the estate of the said deceased contained in an inventory amounting unto the sum of .....2217 Paid and laid out of the deceased estate as followeth: Imprs this accountant and administrator hath paid himself a debt due and owing unto him by the deceased in his lifetime for transporting the deceased goods from Newport News........................400 Itm due from the deceased to this accountant for nine months diet..................900 Itm for a funeral dinner...................500 Itm for the deceased washing and soap in his lifetime......100 Itm for travails and diet at the ordinary about getting ad'con............................100 Item to the Clerk of the Court for his fees.............142 Total............................... .............. .................2142 So it appeareth by this account that this accountant and administrator hath got remaining on his hands of the estate of the deceased the sum of......................69 [By my calculation John Dennis, Sr. had 75 pounds remaining.]

Orphans of John Dennis. 400 acres in Northumberland County. 350 acres north upon a branch of the great Wicocomoco River, called Dennis Creek, southeast upon a branch dividing this from land of Thomas Gascogne and northwest upon land of William Spicer, and 50 acres bounding northeast upon the same, etc. 350 acres due by the decease of their father, John Dennis, who pattented it September 15, 1649; and 50 acres for transporting William Dingley. April 26, 1656. Richard Dennis. 400 acres in Northumberland County. 350 acres north upon a branch of great Wicocomoco River called Dennis Creek, southeast upon a branch dividing same from land of Thomas Gascogne and northwest upon land of William Spicer, and 50 acres adjacent same 350 acres, granted unto his father, John Dennis, September 15, 164- and due him as son and heir; and 50 acres for transporting of one person. December 26, 1664. Barbara Dennis, widow, gives her daughter Mary Dennis four cows. Notes for BARBARY UNKNOWN: After the death of John Dennis, Jr., Barbara married secondly David Spiller. His will was recorded in Northumberland County, Virginia, on October 21, 1658. He stated "I give my whole estate to be equally divided between my sons, John Swanson [he apparently married a Swanson widow, before Barbara], Richard Dennis, Pasco Dennis, and John Dennis, excepting one cow called Florence, which I also give my youngest son John Dennis. I give unto Susanna Holling, my brother's child, a cow. Tobacco to James Magregory. Witnessed by Thomas Gascogne and John Taylor. Children of JOHN DENNIS and BARBARY UNKNOWN are: 3. i. She was born 1645 in Wiccocomico, Northumberland, VA, and died 1725 in St. Stephen's Parish , Northumberland, VA. In "Genealogies of Virginia Families Volume V"...The Waddy Family of Northumberland County Virginia. pg 314 "On March 19, 1679, ..Mr George Bledsoe .. was appointed one of the appraisers of the estate of John Dennis, of which Elizabeth Dennis, the widow, was administratrix. Elizabeth Dennis afterwards married George Dameron." gives us fact: John Dennis III, the youngest son married Elizabeth.


In Genealogies of Virginia Families, Vol. III "Aug. 1, 1750, Joseph Ward, of Amelia County, for 40 currency conveys to John Adkins, of Lunenburg County, 150 acres on lower side of Little Roanoke River" (recorded in Lunenburg Records, Deed Book 2, p. 158)


We find the Creighton family and the Adkins family with court records in Halifax and Lunenburg Co. Virginia. John Adkins sold land to Hugh Creighton. Hugh C. married his daughter Mary Adkins. ,p., Between pp. 58 and 59 of the published text there appears a fold-out map of Lunenburg County as it existed in 1748, overlaid with the tithe subdivisions and the counties that were created from the original territory of Lunenburg county. ------------------------------------------------------------- At June Court, 1749, the appointments to take the list of tithables were made as follows: Nicholas Hayle (Haile), "from Goose Creek to the extent of the County upwards." Matthew Talbot, "from Falling River to Goose Creek." William Caldwell, "from Falling River to Little Ronoke River." (gives us the area they were living in... It looks like the same area as sold in the first record))

PASCHALL3 DENNIS (JOHN JR2, JOHN SR1) was born 1648. He married BARBARA UNKNOWN9. Children of PASCHALL DENNIS and BARBARA UNKNOWN are: i. SON4 DENNIS. 7. ii. MARY DENNIS, b. 1680. 5. RICHARD3 DENNIS (JOHN JR2, JOHN SR1)10 was born Abt. 165011, and died 12. He married UNKNOWN. Notes for RICHARD DENNIS: Richard is in the Circuit Court Clerk's entry with his brothers also listed. This entry is giving land to the children of John Jr.Dennis .. "the land of their father,". The children are In this settlement of his fathers estate and in the Will of the 2nd husband of his mother, David Spiller. Both are in the generation above He probably is the Richard with land in early Lunenburg Co, Virginia. This settlement has a son, Richard Jr. These records are important because Richard's land deeds in Lunenburg Co. Va. have the same dates as our records of Hugh Creighton and John Adkins in Lunenburg County. Richard Jr. probably did not move to South Carolina with the other families. He has land records after 1810 in Lunenburg Co. Virginia. His father and other family members appear in Newberry Co. S.C. at this time. There were several other children of Richard Dennis. Richard also has a son "John Dennis" listed in the settlement. I have a copy of this settlement. Children of RICHARD DENNIS and UNKNOWN are: i. RICHARD JR4 DENNIS. Notes for RICHARD JR DENNIS: In Estate settlement of his father: Richard Jr. probably did not move to South Carolina with the other families. He has land records after 1810 in Lunenburg Co. Virginia. His father and other family members appear in Newberry Co. S.C. at this time. ii. JOHN DENNIS, b. Abt. 1667; d. Abt. 1700, died age 33 when his son was born.
