AENEAS CAMPBELL was born 1730 (1) perhaps in Scotland. He is said to have been a direct descendant of the Duke of Argyle.(3) He appears to have lived in Fairfax County, Virginia (in the part that later became Loudoun Co., Virginia) and Frederick and Montgomery Counties, Maryland. Aeneas married first a wife whose name has been given as #1 Lydia ???(1) or Lydia MIDDLETON (2) or Lydia CARTWRIGHT (3). On 24 December 1793 as "Eneas CAMPBELL" he married secondly in Maryland to #2 Henrietta CHANEY.(4)

He was living in St. Mary's County, Maryland when he bought "Raspberry Plain" in 1754 in Fairfax County, Virginia, and he was living there when Loudoun County was formed from Fairfax County, Virginia.(1) Aeneas was the first sheriff of Loudoun County, Virginia, and he was one of he directors and managers of the town of Leesburg, Virginia.(1)

See: History of Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia
See: History of the Old Courthouse which mentions Aeneas Campbell.

In 1760 he sold "Raspberry Plain" to Thomas MASON, and moved back to Maryland about 1770 settling in that part of Frederick County, Maryland which became Montgomery County, Maryland.(1) In 1774 he is listed on the Patriotic committee of Frederick County, Maryland and in July 1776 he was named Captain in Montgomery County, Maryland during the American Revolutionary War.(1) His rise was rapid and he became Lieutenant Colonel in the 1st Regiment or "Flying Camp" and at one time was the commander of all the Montgomery County, Maryland militia. (1) [He is listed on the DAR membership roles as being a Captain from Maryland. (3)] It appears he was a prominent member of his community for he served from 1779 to 1792 as Judge of the Orphan Court of Montgomery County.(1)

AENEAS CAMPBELL, Jr., son of Aeneas CAMPBELL (1) and his first wife, Lydia MIDDLETON or CARTWRIGHT, was born 1757 VA (1) [perhaps 3 October 1757 Raspberry Plains, Loudoun Co., VA (8)]. He had served as a cadet in his father's 1st Regiment of Maryland (1) in Montgomery County, Maryland Militia on 12 September 1777 when he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant.(3) However, for some reason his pension application was rejected.(1) After the war he returned to Montgomery County, MD where he was a farmer. (3)

Aeneas married first about 1778 (8) [ca 1780 (1)] [in probably Montgomery County] Maryland to Sarah HICKMAN.(1) Sarah was born 11 January 1763. (7) The family originated in Montgomery County, Maryland (1), where Sarah is said to have died ca 1790.(8) Sarah was said to be the mother of 4-5 children. (1)(3) It is said that he removed to Iredell County, North Carolina ca 1790 (3), and there on 25 February 1791 (3) he married Elizabeth "Liza" Ann BELT (1)(2)(3). Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas BELT & Priscilla ???, was born 20 February 1767 in Maryland.(6)

Aeneas, Jr. died 15 October 1828 (10) in Iredell County, North Carolina. He was buried at New Hope, Iredell County, North Carolina (9). An inventory of his estate was taken 12 March 1830, and the executor of his estate was Elijah CAMPBELL.(3) In his will he named his children, the first four by his first wife, Sarah, and the rest by his second wife, Elisabeth "Liza". It appears others may have been deceased or received their inheritance previously by the time Aeneas, Jr. had written his will. Named in the will are: John, Thomas, Middleton, Mary TUCKER, Aeneas [#3], Elijah, Esther, Asa, Bolt/Belt, Elisabeth, and David.

  • John CAMPBELL (1) or John A. J./A. T. CAMPBELL b 1780 (2)(3)

According to a TURNER family Bible, Mary was daughter of Aeneas CAMPBELL, Jr. and his first wife, Sarah HICKMAN.(1) She was born 15 June 1781 in Iredell County, North Carolina, (7) and she married John TUCKER born 25 September 1777. Mary died in 1853. The family originated in Montgomery County, Maryland. John TUCKER and Mary (CAMPBELL) TUCKER are buried at the Beech Grove Cemetery in Washington County, Indiana.(1)

  • Thomas (1) CAMPBELL b 1783 (2) or 10 April 1793 (3)

  • Aeneas (1) CAMPBELL [#3] b 1793, married Susan ???.(2)

His son, David, had made application for a Revolutionary War Pension or bounty land in 1853 from Wilkes County, Georgia, but the pension was rejected because of insufficient evidence. It is interesting to note that the Rejected Pension is filed in the National Archives under Enos CAMPBELL. He does appear in the Maryland records as stated before.(1)
