CHRISTIAN WILLIAM5 CREAGER, s/o Casper4 CREAGER and Barbara SCHMIDT (aka Barbara SMITH), was born 22 [David's Church Cemetery Record, Montgomery Co., OH] or 24 November 1812 [History of Montgomery Co., OH] in Frederick County, Maryland. Christian apparently did not marry until he was 30 years of age to 18 year old Susan DOLAN on 25 March 1841 in Montgomery County, Ohio by John Folkerth J.P. "Susan Dolen" 's father was present and gave his consent. [Marriage Record Bk. A-2, p. 174: Christian W. Creager & Susan "Dolen" (sic)]

"Both Christian and Susan signed their names as heirs of Casper Creager" in 1847. (Internet, 23 Aug 2011, E-mail to ASH: Mary Lou Marshall)

Christian appears to have been a properous farmer. Christian and Susan were parents of a large family, but as was typical of the time period they lost three young children and one in young adulthood. Like many other families of the day whooping cough, diptheria, consumption (tuberculosis), flu, pneumonia, etc. was widespread and claimed many young ones within families.

Christian William Creager and wife, Susan Dolan

Christian died 1 November 1892 Montgomery County, Ohio, and he was buried at David's Cemetery in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. Susan was born bet. 14 April 1820 - 1822 in Ohio and died 18 March 1894 Montgomery County, Ohio. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. The two apparently practiced the faith of their parents with Christian being of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and Susan being Roman Catholic. The couple apparently crossed religious family boundaries of the day to fall in love and marry...living together for 62 years, but in death they do not lie side by side. Christian William was buried in David's Cemetery in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, while Susan lies buried at Calvary Cemetery, a Catholic cemetery, of Montgomery County, Ohio. They children appear to also have taken different paths in their religious convictions.

The children of this marriage included:
  1. William Henry Creager born 1842 (Censuses) or 1844 (Remembrance); died May 1868 at 24y (Remembrance); bur Calvary Cemetery [See gravestone below.]
  2. John P. Creager born 1842, 1843 or 1844 (Varies in censuses)
  3. Mary Ann Creager born 1845, 1846, or 1848 (Varies in censuses)
  4. Ezra Creager born 1847 (according to two censuses)
  5. Susan "Anna" Creager born 1848 (according to two censuses)
  6. Jacob P. Creager born 17 September 1850 (Death Record, but perhaps informant was wrong.) [Sep 1850 Census indicates he was already 8m old and other censuses seem to validate his earlier birth.]
  7. Eliza Jane "Jennie" Creager born 5 March 1851 (Death Record)
  8. Daniel Creager born 1854 (History of Montgomery Co., OH) or 1865 (Remembrance); died 1870 at 5y 5m (Remembrance)
  9. George Creager born 1856 (Gravestone) or 1861 (Remembrance); died 1861 (Gravestone) or May 1866 at 5y 4m (Remembrance)
[Note: Is this the George Creager who died 31 May 1861 at 5y 5m 13d, thus born 1856?]
    [David's Cemetery gravestone: see below]
  10. Emma Florence Creager born about 1859 (Census)
  11. Emily Creager born abt. November 1859 (Remembrance); died 22 March 1860 at 5m (Remembrance)
[Was she the unknown daughter mentioned in the History of Montgomery Co., OH born 1852?]
[Could Emma & Emily have been twins? ASH]

[Note: It would be interesting to learn if bapitismal records exist for any of the children. ASH]

With the younger children living apart from the family it appears possibly that someone was sick in the family or perhaps another unknown child was near birth or born at this time.

"C. W. CREAGER, retired farmer, P. O. Dayton, Box 810, was born in Frederick Co., MD, November 24, 1812, a son of Casper and Barbara (SMITH) CREAGER. They were of German descent, and natives of the above named State. In 1813, they with three children, came to Ohio and settled in Warren County, near Franklin. His death occurred in May of 1846, aged eighty-five years, as nearly as can be ascertained. His wife survived just one year, and died at the age of sixty-eight. He died at 6 A.M. and she at 6 P.M. They were reared in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and remained in fellowship with the same, and had their children instructed in the doctrines of that church. Adam, Solomon and Christian William, were the children born in Maryland, and Ezra, David, John, Sophia, Daniel and Mary, born in Warren County, OH. C. W. was reared as a farmer; worked for his father till twenty-one years of age, when he began life for himself; worked by the month and cropped for about six years. On the 25th of March, 1830, he married Susan DOLAN. She was of Irish parentage, born April 14, 1822. They lived on rented land at different places till 1845, when they purchased a farm in the western part of Montgomery County, whre he remained twelve years, and then purchased 151 acres in Van Buren Township, of the same county, where they now reside and are comfortably situated for life. They are the parents of eleven children--William Henry, John P., Mary A., Ezra, Susan, Jacob, Eliza Jane, infant daughter deceased, Daniel, George and Emma Florence. The two youngest sons and the oldest are deceased. William H. was a member of the Catholic Church, with which his mother is also identified. Mr. Creager is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church."

[Note: Internet, 15 July 2003, E-mail to ASH: Ken Striker indicates the following, "I called Calvary Cemetery this morning... They had records of Susan Creager, the wife of C. W. Creager, who was buried at David's Cemetery. The stone for the oldest son, Wm. H. Creager is nearby, flat to the ground. The biography below indicates that they [Susan and son, Wm. Henry] were Catholic. It is a situation like at C. W. Creager's burial spot at David's Cemetery. The mother has a similar monument and also there is a small stone nearby for the son Wm. H. Creager, and the information for Wm. H. is on one side of her monument."]
