Genealogy Records
THE KRIEGER (CREEGER, CREAGER) FAMILY FROM THE MORAVIAN RECORDS,
GRACEHAM,, MARYLAND
Compiled 12 August 1958
by John R. Hoesman, Minister
and sent to Cheryl Creeger by the church caretaker, Mr. Bentz, some 15 years ago.

"On October 8, 1758, The Moravian Church, then called "Die Gemeindes in Manakasy," at Graceham was organized."
(Source: Internet, 8 Oct 2006, [MDFR] History Moment)

Cheryl states, "To both of them I am most grateful. Please note that I have typed it exactly as the minister typed it except that I have used all capitals on the names of ancestors. Furthermore I have corrected some obvious typos such as alsi (also). Im not sure what the numbers in parentheses signify which follow certain pieces of information, such as that after the name of JOHN WELLER."

FIRST GENERATION
[John Lorenz KRIEGER and Maria Elizabeth HAHN FAMILY]

(Source: Internet, 01 Jul 2000, CREAGER-L: Cheryl Creeger)

JOHN LORENZ (LAWRENCE) KRIEGER
was born March 15, 1715 in Bettelhausen, Wittgenstein, Germany.
His parents are not named.

MARIA ELIZABETH HAHN,
was born November 23, 1715 at Alertshausen
also in Wittgenstein, Germany.
Her parents are not named.
They sailed to America in either 1737 or 1738 on the same boat.
Her father had died at 4 years of age
and she became a servant girl later,
serving in Germany for thirteen years before her departure for America.

They reached the port of Philadelphia
where for the next three years or more
she also worked as a servant girl.

No account is given of Mr. Krieger during this time.

These two were united in holy wedlock in either 1741 or 1742 as the records say.
They then came West in Pennsylvania,
crossed the Susquehanna at the old Wrights Ferry
then on to Lancaster and York
where they went seven miles beyond and lived on the Codorus.
Numerous Moravians were already in that area.
Here their first two children were born.
The eldest MAGDALENA was born April 28th, 1743
and became the wife of JOHN WELLER.
These Wellers had two daughters
and Magdalena passed away about seven weeks
after the last was born Nov. 12, 1765. (125)

The second child of John and Maria Krieger is not named
and supposedly died in infancy.

The third child MARIA BARBARA KRIEGER
married JOHN WELLER (123, bottom).
She had been born near Graceham May 10, 1747
for they came from the Codorus in the early months of that year.
From the first they became connected with the Moravians
having become connected with them through the preaching of Jacob Lischy
who was the first of the Moravian evangelists west of the Susquehanna river.

The fourth child was born at Graceham
May 18, 1749 and named JOHN HENRY
who died at the age of 15 years and one week.

The fifth child was LORENZ (LAWRENCE)
born here May 26, 1754
who later married ANNA MARIA HARBAUGH.

The sixth child born May 10, 1761 at 8 a.m.
lived only six days
and was buried on his fathers farm.

There were two other daughters
ANNA ELIZABETH who married a certain
RICKSEEKER
and ANNA MARGARET who married the leader of the Church choir at Lititz, Pa.
but whose name is not given.
Neither are there any dates in connection with these two girls.

Thus we see that only one male child, who was Lorenz became of age.
He married as above Anna Maria Harbaugh.

The father died August 28, 1784 from consumption
resulting from a leg injury which did not easily heal.

The mother died July 23, 1798, 82 years and 8 months of age.
Owing to failing eyesight she could not attend worship services
the last year of her life but remembered many hymns,
and often sang them in the last part of her life.
She was the author of one Church hymn.

SECOND GENERATION
[of the John Lorenz and Maria Elizabeth (Hahn) Krieger family]

(Source: Internet, 01 Jul 2000, CREAGER-L: Cheryl Creeger)

LORENZ (LAWRENCE), only son of John Lorenz and Maria Elizabeth Hahn
who reached his majority.
He was born, location not given, in Frederick Co., Md. May 26, 1754.

ANNA MARIA HARBAUGH was born February 26, 1754
the third daughter of George and Catherine Williar Harbaugh.
(67 at bottom)
This couple had twelve children, twins, SAMUEL and JOSEPH
being born March 22, 1791.

They were wedded August 30, 1774 and were with the Moravian Church
from cradle to the grave. Both lie buried in the Graceham Moravian Cemetery.
It is evident that they were quite enterprising in life
and that their farm operations were quite large.
The records show that they purchased two slaves,
Jacob and Anna Williamson from Thomas Ogle.
To this slave couple was born three children Anna, Sarah and Benjamin
in the years 1787, 1789 and 1791 respectively. (149)

The third child and second son of Lorenz and Anna Maria Harbaugh Krieger,
named JOHN JACOB, was born May 24, 1779.

[NOTE by me...Cheryl: At this point the author follows only 1 child per generation
because he is compiling these records upon request from a Krieger/Weller descendant
and none of the other 11 children are dealt with,
although some are mentioned in a later part of his report.]

THIRD GENERATION
[of the John Lorenz and Maria Elizabeth (Hahn) Krieger family]

(Source: Internet, 24 Jul 2000, CREAGER-L: Cheryl Creeger)

JOHN JACOB,
the second son of Lorenz and Anna Maria Harbaugh Krieger
was born near Graceham, Maryland, May 24, 1779.
MARIA CATHERINE BUSH, his wife,
was born also in the vicinity of Graceham, Maryland on March 26, 1784.
She was the daughter of John Bush and his wife Anna Elizabeth Stauffer.
The latter was born at Skippack, Pa.
April 6, 1760, and lived to be 66 years of age.
At the time of her death she had eight grandchildren (p. 11)
and was buried at the side of her husband near the family residence.

They were wedded March 31, 1803.
Both are reported as communicant members
of the Congregation at the time of their marriage.
To this union was born eight children, seven boys and one girl.
All were given Bible names.
The girl who was the third born of the children was named DEBORAH.
It is important to remember this Deborah
for she represents the fourth generation of the Krieger family
which was now to unite with the WELLER family.
The last of the boys had the name JOHN.
He was born July 20, 1824
and as a young man became a soldier in the Mexican War and died in Mexico.
The manner of his death, however, is not given.

"Some of the old history books have the history of Thurmont (Mechanicstown) completely wrong. There is no such person as the Daniel Weller mentioned in John's History Moment of July 22nd. There were two Weller families (not related) who settled in the vicinity of the town in the l740's (Johannes and Jacob). The actual town lots were laid out by John Creager, son of Lorenz, about l803. This is the same family that platted Creagerstown.

Lawrence Krieger's farm "Stoney Corner" was nucleus of today's Thurmont, totalled nearly 600 acres by l780's, and divided between his two sons at his death."
