HISTORY OF WESTERN MARYLAND
by
J. Thomas Scharf
1882

Frederick Co. - "Creagerstown District was settled about 1750 by the Creagers (then spelt Kriegers), Kolbs, Beattys, Hoffmans, Gusharns, Zimmermans, Lillys, Dohmers, Reids, Protsmans, Campbells, Millers, Shrupps, Wilhides, Maj. Head, Hammetts, Fundenbergs, Cullers, Bollers, Bickels, and others. A large majority of the earliest settlers were German, and many of them from Pennsylvania. JOHN CREAGER owned the land where the village stands, and laid it off before the Revolution into lots for a town.

Creagerstown is situated at what was formerly the junction of the Baltimore and Pittsburg road with the Washington and Buffalo road.

Col. Jacob Creager used to relate many incidents derived from his father of the conflicts of the Tories and Whigs in the days of the Revolution."

NOTE: The name of John Cramer as the founder of Creagerstown in other resources is an error.

NOTE: This Krieger/Creager family who established Creagerstown and other towns in Frederick County, Maryland are not connected with or related to the Johann Casper Krieger (s/o Ernst Krieger) family. See: CREAGER-KRIEGER, etc. Y-DNA PROJECT. Johann Casper Krieger/Creager had immigrated 1730 to America, settled in Pennsylvania, and removed to Frederick Co., MD by 1754. The line of John Lorenz Krieger also settled in Frederick Co., MD, and his descendants established Creagerstown. DNA results separate these families into two distinct unconnected DNA lines.  ASH
