HOCHWALT TRADE CARDS

A trade or advertising card (typically about 3 x 5 inches) is similar to the business card of today. It had its beginnings in Europe in the 1600s and flourished in late 1870s with development of color lithography. With immigration the practice was brought to America where tradesmen distributed these colorful, attractive cards to their customers. This way of advertising blossomed until early 1900s, when cheaper ways of advertising came into being. Collecting tradecards became a famous scrapbooking pasttime during the Victorian Era by both adults and children. (Information from Sheri Becker) [Also, Google for information: "trade cards".]

  • George Hochwalt (1821-1894), son of Heinrich/Henry Hochwalt & Eva Haas, immigrated with his parents from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. They sojourned in Baltimore, Maryland before moving onto Montgomery County, Ohio. When they moved to Ohio, they left George behind to learn the shoe-maker's trade. Upon finishing his apprenticeship, George joined his parents in Montgomery County, Ohio. Here he established a very successful shoe business for fifty years. His business was located at 40 East 3rd Street. He ended his career in 1890 and died four years later. George married (1) Christena [--?--] and (2) Theresa Lothammer.
  • Henry Hochwalt (b 1849), son of George & (1) Christena [--?--], was probably the one who distributed the last two trade cards. Like his father, he was also successful in the shoe business. These two trade cards for Henry's shop advertised the business located at the corner of 4th and Jefferson (the old post office).
  • Another Henry Hochwalt) (1827-1897), s/o Heinrich/Henry Hochwalt & Eva Haas, was thus a brother of George Hochwalt, the shoe maker. It is not known at this time if this Henry was a shoemaker or not. [Note: This is Henry Hochwalt who married Mary Magdelena Lehmann.
