Biography:
Peter Laboyteaux and his wife, Sarah Potts

PETER LABOYEAUX, believed s/o Peter LABOYTEAUX and Jemymy (Jemima) BRIES, was probably born before 1738; was christened 16 April 1738; married Sarah POTTS. Sarah was born 22 November 1731.
[Arlene Wimmer Hill has recorded this Peter is s/o Peter Laboyteaux & Jemymy (Jemima) Bries. It is also recorded that Sarah was Mary "Polly" Potts b 1731 and perhaps dau/o Joshua Potts & Anna (Ann) Borden based upon the Callahan Manuscript, however at this time, there is no proof to validate such a name and family connection. ash]

As seen in 1998 by Arlene Wimmer Hill:
Old Laberteaux Bible now (1998) in the possession of Margaret Laura Peterson of Niles, Michigan:
"Sarah Pots Born in November the 22 In The year of our Lord God 1731."

Children:
1. Benjamin LABOYTEAUX (Overseers*: 1765 said to be 20y.)
[If this Benjamin is 20y of age, then Sarah could not have been his mother, as she is believed to have been 24y in 1765. Perhaps Benjamin was a brother of Peter and residing with Peter and Sarah, or perhaps he was Peter's son from a previous marriage. Of course, then this would make Peter older than Sarah. Conflict: Baptismal record below for a Benjamin seems to be for a child born after Elizabeth. If this was a baptismal record for the Benjamin listed as 20y in 1760, he would have been baptized as an adult in 1765 (age 25). Why would Peter name two sons Benjamin? It appears more likely that he could have been Peter's brother? And, the family Bible names no child as Benjamin. ash]

2. Jemima LABOYTEAUX (Overseers*: 1765 said to be 2y.) [Source: awh: ***Named in LABERTEAUX Bible]
[This Jemima Laboyteaux is believed by Arlene Wimmer Hill and others to have been the Jemima who married 11 Dec 1781 to Jacob Wimmer. ash]

3. Elizabeth LABOYTEAUX (Overseers*: 1765 said to be abt. 6m.) (**Baptized 1770) [Source: awh: ***Named in LABERTEAUX Bible]
[Elizabeth LABOYTEAUX m 13 Mar 1783 to Capt. Andrew Brown.] [Elizabeth, wid/o Andrew Brown, m ca 1790 NYC, NY to William Carver. (Source: J.A.R.M.)]

4. Benjamin Laboyteaux (**Baptized 1770) [Source: awh]
[It seems unlikely that Peter & Sarah would name another son Benjamin, if one son was already named Benjamin. It appears this son was born after Elizabeth, and would not be the above Benjamin who would have been 25y in 1770. ash][Source: awh: NOT named in LABERTEAUX Bible]

5. Jacob Laboyteaux (**Baptized 1770) [Source: awh: ***Named in LABERTEAUX Bible]

6. Willem (William) LABOYTEAUX (**Baptized 1770) (married Eva/Affie Van Cleave) [Source: awh: ***Named in LABERTEAUX Bible]

7. Angenitye (Agnes) LABOYTEAUX b 1771 [Source: awh: ***Named in LABERTEAUX Bible]

8. Gabriel (Geabere) LABOYTEAUX b 1773 [Source: awh: ***Named in LABERTEAUX Bible]

Peter and Sarah appear to have been the only members of the family who appear in records with the surname spelling of Betu.

"Other family stories have Peter and Sarah joining the Conewago Colony of reformed-minded people who migrated from New Jersey to Adams and York counties in southern Pennyslvania, just south of Gettysburg, in the latter half of the 1700s. Peter's name is not listed on the heads of household for that colony nor have any records about him surfaced in Pennsylvania."

QUESTIONS
Peter Laboyteaux married Sarah Potts.

  1. Is there another record available to confirm that Peter Laboyteaux married a Sarah Potts. (Marriage Record; Church Record, etc.?)

  2. Does another source besides the Callahan Manuscript identify Sarah as Mary "Polly" Potts?

"Callahan Manuscript" information from Arlene Wimmer Hill via Don La Berteaux Dec 1997: Le Boyteaux, p. 8.

"Peter Le Boyteulx, b around 1747, probably in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., NJ. Around 1762 he md Mary "Polly" Potts, dau of Rev. Joshua Potts and his wife Ann Borden Potts."
[2008: There is no proof that Sarah Potts (wf/o Peter Laboyteaux) was the dau/o Rev. Joshua Potts and Ann Borden, nor that Sarah's name was aka Mary "Polly" Potts. It appears only Mrs. Callahan, the author, knew the reason for suggesting the name and the family connection. Perhaps it was purely conjecture at the time.]

  3. Has anyone else had difficulty confirming and justifying the parentage of Sarah Potts (sometimes referred to as Sarah Mary "Polly" POTTS), as Jim de Waal Malefyt perhaps does in his manuscript? ash

    May 18, 1998: MANUSCRIPT & BIBLIOGRAPHY:
Gabriel LeBoyteulx (1652-1734) of LaRochelle, France, New York City, and Piscataway, New Jersey
    by
    James J. de Waal Malefyt
"Research by Ann Callahan in the 1950s led her to firmly believe that Peter Laboyteaux married Mary "Polly" Potts, daughter of Rev. Joshua Potts and Ann Borden of Burlington, New Jersey. There is no firm connection of Peter or of a Sarah Potts to this family. The birth of Joshua Potts in 1714 or 1719 would mean he was only age 12 or 17 when Sarah Potts was born in 1731. Another record shows Joshua Potts was married in 1742, a decade after Sarah Potts was born."

[Note: Looking at other's research we find Joshua's and Ann's marriage is given as 1738, 1742, and even 1750-1760, which would almost omit our "Sarah" as being their child, to which Jim de Waal Malefyt seems to allude. The Bible record above names her as 'Sarah Pots', of which "Peter/Piter & Sarah Betu/etc." coincides with the "Overseer's Record" and Church Records of NJ which names the parents and some of the childen. The Bible record appears to confirm the Church Records except for Benjamin (or 2 Benjamins) and gives an additional 2 children. ash]

  4. Does anyone know anything about the location or copies/scans/photos of the "Old Laberteaux BIBLE" given as a reference? ash

  5. AWH notes: On the same Bible page in different handwriting, it says with the name or word following Johnathan being unreadable: "Johnathan ______ was Born In The year of our Lord God January - - 1756."
Who might this Johnathan be? ash

  6. AWH notes: On the same page in similar handwriting to item about Sarah: "Dorithy Daughter of Elisebeth Pary was Born November the 29 In The year of our Lord God 1754."
Who might this Elisabeth be? ash

  7. AWH: On a separate sheet of paper sewn into the Bible: "Jeamima is born 12 day May 1763, Eleazebit is born 9 day of April 1765, William is born 23 day May 1767, Jacob is born 20 day May 1769, Angenitje is born 9 day September 1771, Geabere is born 7 day Janewary 1773."
These appear to be the children of Peter Laboyteaux & Sarah Pots. Yet, there is no mention of any Benjamins. Anyone have further information on one or two Benjamin LABOYTEAUXs? ash
