ARRANGEMENT of DATA

J. F. LABOYTEAUX appears to have been the owner of a very obscure brewery in New Castle, Henry County, Indiana. It is said that the local historical society has no information concerning this brewery, when it operated and its owner. The identity of this J. F. Laboyteaux and his LABOYTEAUX family connections are unknown at this time by family researchers. One reference indicates that there was a Laboyteaux & Co. Brewery, built 1865 and was located on Hagerstown Pike, Henry County, Indiana about 1/4 mile east of New Castle. If this is the same bottle as advertised on E-bay in January 2008 from the former Pat Sheley collection, the information given is: vintage ale bottle, 10 1/4 inches tall, being one of two bottles found in late 1970s-80s in a Lafayette, Indiana canal.

JACOB LABOYTEAUX [aka Jacob LABERTEAUX], s/o Peter LABOYTEAUX and Sarah (aka Mary "Polly") POTTS, born 20 May 1769 New Jersey; was christened 12 Jan 1770.

Harlingen Reformed Church
Montgomery Twp., Somerset County, NJ

"Willem, Jacob, Benijemen, Elisabet" on 12 Jan 1770, children of "Pieter & Sarah Betu."
(Source: E-mail: 09 Dec 1997: Jim de Waal Malefyt: Gen Magazine of NJ, 19:37)

Jacob married 26 January 1790 at the Reformed Dutch Church, Conewago, Pennsylvania by Rev. George G. Brinckerhoff to Anna "Anne" AMMERMAN, dau/o Hendrick AMMERMAN and Yanette VAN ARSDALE [AERTSDALEN]. Anna was born 16 August 1768 Conewago, York County, Pennsylvania; died 24 November 1848 [perhaps in Michigan]. It is said that Jacob and Anna went to upstate New York [perhaps Cayuga County, New York where his brother William died and where others of the Conewago Colony settled], but evidently from there they migrated to Calhoun County, Michigan where Jacob is said to have died on 30 October 1838. In Michigan the family surname began to be spelled as LABERTEAUX. They were parents of eight known children: Peter, Jane, Sally, Henry, Jacob, James, Polly, & Eliza.

In reviewing the way that Jacob Laboyteaux [aka Laberteaux] and Anna Ammerman named their children, it appears they used the more traditional pattern of the Dutch for at least their first five children:
Peter, 1st son after his father
Jane, 1st dau. after her mother [Was she Yanette or Janette?]
Sally, 2nd dau. after his mother
Henry, 2nd son after her father
Jacob, after the father
James
Polly
Eliza
Traditionally after naming children after the parents the remaining children were named after his/her grandparents, uncles/aunts and his/her siblings.

We have some disagreement by researchers in Sarah (Potts) Laboyteaux's given name, wife of Peter Laboyteaux. Some refer to her as Sarah and others as Mary "Polly" and so she presently is referred to Sarah Mary "Polly" in Arlene's GEDCOM. We know that "Sally" is a nickname for Sarah and "Polly" a nickname for Mary. Early records just call her Sarah and a Bible Record names her as "Sarah Pots." However, the undated CALLAHAN Manuscript refers to her as Mary "Polly" Potts. What did Mrs. Callahan know that is not documented. What were her reasons for naming Peter's wife as Mary "Polly" instead of Sarah? ash

JAMES LABOYTEAUX
Seeking information concerning this photo. Information 15 Feb 2009 from Mark Strube:
On the back of the photo below is written Mrs. John Franklin, whose maiden name was Stella Brodie. The photo was taken 26 September 1910 at a birthday dinner in honor of Mr. James Laboyteaux, but none of those present are identified. Stella was born and raised in Huntsville, Madison Co., Arkansas and married in 1899 to John Franklin. After her marriage they moved to Indian Territory. By 1910 they were living in Hereford, Texas. In Oklahoma, John and Stella lived around the Vinita area. Most of their married life with the exception of the short time they were in Texas.

Mark and our Laboyteaux group are seeking the identifications of James Laboyteaux and the folks in the photo. We are also seeking the LABOYTEAUX family line for this James Laboyteaux. It is not known if there was a family or friendly relationship between James Laboyteaux and John & Stella (Brodie) Franklin. Please contact Mark and Audrey.

JOHN LABOITEAUX
[There is no reference to the source for this Xeroxed information. The information within this article is in conflict with other information. We know that (Capt.) John Laboyteaux (born abt. 1740-1780) (wife, Hannah Smith) was the one killed on the Aurora, yet this article appears to indicate that a brother of John Laboiteaux died in New York Harbor. Information from John C. La Boyteaux in 2008 indicates that the place was Delaware Bay near Philadelphia. Other information states that (Capt.) John Laboyteaux son was taken prisoner on the Jersey, yet this article indicates a brother was taken prisoner. Who is the John Laboiteaux in this article? ash]

JOSEPH (Josup) LABOYTEAUX, s/o Peter LABOYTEAUX & Jemymy (Jemima) BRIES, was born Bef. 14 March 1731. He appears to have been an innkeeper at Hillsborough, Somerset County, New Jersey. In those days a tavern and inn were synonymous as they frequently had rooms to let within the tavern. Usually to operate a tavern/inn, one had to secure a license. [Check for tavern licenses.]

14 Mar 1731 - bap Josup (Joseph), child of Pieter Betu, wit. Henne Bries.

(Source: 2006, Arlene Wimmer Hill)

[This record indicates that Joseph married Catherine Sickles, but if Joseph was born abt. 1731 and didn't marry until 1769 that would have made him close to 31 years of age at time of his marriage to Catherine. There is a strong possibility that there could have been previous marriage. Joseph is said to have resided in Hillsborough, but there was another Joseph residing in New York City. ash]
