RODNEY LABOYTEAUX, a free man of color, was born 1782 and in 1816 was residing on Canal Street in New York City. His occupation is given as "tinman."
The scan below "is from the 1816 Jury Census for New York City which recorded a Rodney Laboyteaux, age 34, who was a free man of Color. ...he appears to be in the 1810...and 1820 census." Perhaps "the Laboyteaux [family] were members of the Manumission Society and freed this man years earlier and perhaps he chose the Laboyteaux surname to honor them. Alexander Hamilton was president of the Manumission Society in New York City and there are many manumission records at the NY Historical Society..." "... Note, this individual was a skilled craftsman. JARM"
"There was a BETU [variant of Laboyteaux] in the 1790 Federal Census which gave that he/she wasn't white. It is not known if the person was male...Perhaps it was a Laboyteaux who appeared in the early New York City directories as their residences appear to be co-existent, or near so. Perhaps this was Rodney's mother or father.--JARM"
[Rodney could have been a slave for a Laboyteaux family and took their surname; or there could even be a possibility that he was a DNA relative. ash]
