John J. LABOYTEAUX-1794

PUTTING THE RIGHT PIECES TOGETHER

JOHN JOSEPH LABOYTEAUX

NOTE: Elizabeth "Beth" Zaring has been attempting to validate her LABOYTEAUX family line. She believes that John J. Laboyteaux is also the person identified as Joseph Laboyteaux (Baptismal Record), John J(oseph) Laboyteaux (Cemetery Record), and John Jackson (sic) Laboyteaux (Death Record of son, Hiram). She states, "My sources are death certificates, newspaper articles/obituaries, photographs of headstones, and items mailed to me by Tom Hamm of Richmond, Indiana."

Beth believes her lineage as thus:

Gabriel1 Le Boiteaux m Angietje "Agnes" Constance LeBrun
Peter2 La Boyteaux m Jemima "Jemymy" Bries
Captain John3 Laboyteaux b Abt. 1740 m Hannah Smith
John4 Laboyteaux b 25 Dec 1764 New York City m Phebe [--?--]
John J.(probably Joseph)5 La Boyteaux m Elizabeth Montfort
Hiram6 La Boyteaux m Elizabeth Fisher
Cornelia7 LaBoyteaux m Amos C. Wilkinson
Vaughn H.8 Wilkinson m Lucy Jane Davis
Marjorie9 Wilkinson m Robert Wesley Zaring Zaring

5 Feb 2008, Elizabeth "Beth" Zaring states:
  • Somerset Co., NJ Historical Quarterly, Vol. 1, p. 134; Vol. 8, p. 61: Records of Neshanic Dutch Reformed Church.
    "Joseph, b 5 Dec 1794, chris. 9 Dec 1796; Peter b 28 Nov 1792, chr 9 Dec 1796." Children of John Labertude and Phebe.
  • "Hiram Laboyteaux's death certificate listed his father as 'Jackson [sic] Laboyteaux' and his mother as 'Elizabeth Moffett' [sic]." We must remember death certificate information is given by another person who may not have all the information correct. Both Jackson & Moffett are incorrect. "Monford/Monfort/Montfort has almost as many spellings as LaBoyteaux, but Moffett is not one of them. I'm thinking Hiram remarried an Edith Lamb, after Elizabeth Fisher died. So if Edith [or another] gave the information for the Hiram's death record, she would have entered the picture rather late in Hiram's life [to possibly know the family names correctly]." [Arlene Wimmer Hill has his 2nd wife identified as Phoebe Hughes Finley.]

  • John J. [Joseph's] wife's [Elizabeth (Monfort) Laboyteaux] death certificate has no spouse listed. It is blank, and her father is listed as "Peter Monford." No informants are listed on either death record.

  • Headstone lists him as John J. ?LaBoyteaux. Batson cemetery records list him as John J. with someone apparently knowledgeable of the family penciling in John J.oseph. Headstone picture for John J. and his wife, Elizabeth Laboyteaux should be considered. Beth states, "The dates on the headstone gave the death date and how long they lived in years, months and days. For John J., it simply said, 'Died Dec. 4 1867, Aged 73 years'. That would put his birth at Dec. 4, 1794." (See: Batson Cemetery Burials, Henry County, Indiana)

  • Children of John G. [aka John Gabriel LaBoyteaux] & Phoebe ??? are given by Beth as:
    1. Peter J. LaBoyteaux b 28 Nov 1792
    2. Joseph LaBoyteaux b 5 Dec 1794 (later known as John Joseph)
    3. Asher LaBoyteaux b 1800
    4. Joseph J. LaBoyteaux b 28 Jan 1802
    5. Stephen LaBoyteaux b 22 May 1804
    6. Bathsheba / Barsheba LaBoyteaux b 11 Jun 1807
    7. William Elisha LaBoyteaux b 19 Aug 1811

[Note: It would appear that there would not be two in the same family with the first name of Joseph, unless the one 10 years older than his younger brother, Joseph, was going by a more familiar name within the family and "Joseph" merely a baptismal name for the elder son. In this case perhaps the person baptized as "Joseph" b 5 Dec 1794 according to the manuscript of James J. Waal De Malefyt was known later as "John" Joseph within the immediate family. Of course, we can also assume that this Joseph b 1794 died, and thus another was named Joseph in his stead who was born 1802. But, perhaps another scenario is possible. ASH]

    8. Arlene Wimmer Hill lists on p. 14 in her book, JOSEPH LABOYTEAUX-884 (b. Dec 1794), and nothing more. Arlene then lists a Joseph J. LABERTEW-985 (b. Jan 1802, d. 26 Aug 1847) on page 15. Beth believes these are two different children born to John G. and Phebe with the first Joseph being her John J. LaBoyteaux. [Note: It would be interesting to learn the middle name for Joseph J. b 1802. ASH]

    9. 4, 1794." [Note: This is within a day of the birth of said "Joseph," s/o John G. & Phebe. This extremely close birthdate for Joseph & John J. makes one very suspicious that they are one and the same person. ASH]

    10. In Jim de Waal Malefyt's booklet, page 24, he lists two John and Phebes together (John m. Phebe and John G. m. Phebe). "My theory is these are the same people, John and Phebe. The first John and Phebe paragraph lists two boys baptised, Peter b. 28 Nov 1792 and JOSEPH b. 5 Dec 1794. I think this "Joseph" is my direct ancestor, John J." It appears he may have been John Joseph.

    11. John J. LaBoyteaux is called John in his son's, Hiram Laboyteaux, obituary. This same son names his father as John in a marriage application.

    12. Hiram Laboyteaux's death certificate listed his father at Jackson Laboyteaux, however, on this we must remember that another person gave the information that appears on the certificate, sometimes an unknowledgeable persons. "...the death record of Hiram Laboyteaux where his father is listed as Jackson; this information was probably given by his wife of a few years, Phebe Hughes Finley, or another who also gave Hiram's mother as Elizabeth Moffett when in reality she was really Elizabeth Monford/Montford/Monfort."

    13. Headstone lists him as John J. ?LaBoyteaux. Batson cemetery records list him as John J. with someone apparently knowledgeable of the family penciling in John J.oseph.

Timeline for John Joseph Laboyteaux 1794 December 4 or 5

1796 December 9 Somerset County, NJ
"Joseph Laboyteaux b 5 Dec 1794" was baptized along with his brother, Peter (b 1792), at the Neshanic Reformed Dutch Church, Hillsborough Twp., Somerset County, NJ. (Waal Malefyt, James J.)

      Bef. 1802
Perhaps the one who became known as John J. Laboyteaux. According to Dutch tradition the eldest son would have been named for the paternal grandfather; the second son for the maternal grandfather; and a third son for the father, and a similar way for daughters. However, this family does not appear to carry on the naming pattern according to tradition. Peter was the name of the unknown paternal great-grandfather, unless it was also the name of the maternal grandfather or part of the paternal grandfather's name, which is only known as Gabriel Laboyteaux.
