LABOYTEAUX-CARY CEMETERY

Author unknown
Author may have been: Betty Ann Smiddy, one-time editor of the College Hill Newsletter.

(2008, LABOYTEAUX PAPERS: Elizabeth "Betsy" Zaring)

"Originally one acre set aside by Peter LaBoyteaux from is 320 acres. Peter died 1816. His son, John LaBoyteaux sold 83 acres to Benajah Cary (uncle to Alice & Phebe Cary) in 1816. At one time John LaBoyteaux owned one half of what is today called Mt. Healthy. The LaBoyteaux family came from New York in the early 1800s to settle this area. After 1858 when Benajah died his land was sold and the last burial in this cemetery was 1860.

Hamilton & Galbraith Avenues were widened in 1927. The cemtery land was pushed into a mound. North College Hill acquired the property in 1969 but couldn't move the cemetery unless all the relatives of those buried there were notified and if a single grave was to be moved then all of the graves must be moved to an area in Spring Grove cemetery and North College Hill had to pay all costs and notifications and perpetual care for graves in Spring Grove.

The cemtery is currently 60 x 118 feet which is 3/4 of its original size. It contains 44 bodies.

United States to Symmes, Symmes to Ephraim Brown, Ephraim Brown to Pet LaBoyteaux, Peter L. LaBoyteaux to John G. LaBoyteaux, Peter L. LaBoyteaux to Benajah Cary - land less burying ground (1-/18/1818 + 83.88 acres)

Benajah Cary to Jas. Riddle Oct. 26, 1838, burying ground in SE corner, 4 rods & 5 feet east and west and 9 rods north & south."
