Martin LEHMANN, birth 12 November 1820, Schirrhein
Birth of Martin, 1 am, male legitimate son of Michel LEHMANN, aged 30, residing Schirrhein, day laborer, and of Madeleine BIAM, residing Schirrhein. Birth in house #21.
Witnesses: Andr HAHN (signed Andreas Hann), aged 31, day laborer;
Jean STAMM, aged 33, clerck (greffier) at the town hall

A French passport was issued to his father, Michel Lehmann, for the transportation of himself and his family in 1828. It must have been soon after that his father took the family to the port of Le Havre, booked passage, and boarded the ship L'Esperance that would take them across the Atlantic and far away into the developing and fledging world called the United States.

Michel and Marie Madeleine with their children (Martin, Juliann, Regina Rachel, and Catharine) would spend about six to 10 weeks aboard the L'Esperance before their arrival at the Port of New York.

[French Civil Birth Records of children give parents' names and ages, which aided in identifying the above mentioned children.]

[NOTE: It is evident that regardless of the mistakes in the manifest that this is the Michel Lehmann family aboard the ship. Also, listed as arriving on the same ship from Schirrhein was Antoine Hahn & his family, and others. Evidently, the manifest recorder could not understand French or whatever our ancestors were speaking at the time. Discrepancies are frequently found like this in old records, as the recorder was often interpreting based upon phonetic pronunciation given by the immigrants who were often illiterate or unable to speak the language of the recorder.]

Their journey with other families from Alsace across the ocean ended on 6 September 1828. From New York, they and the others made their way via land, rivers, and the canals toward the developing Catholic community within Stark County, Ohio. Here Michel purchased a plot of land in Plain Township residing near his countrymen and their families. Here they attended [Historic] St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Here two more children were born to Michel and Marie Madeleine and they were baptized at [Historic] St. John's Catholic Church.

By 1830 the family had established itself in Plain Township (near Canton) in Stark County, Ohio. Here they were enumerated at the time of the 1830 United States Federal Census. Here they lived near their fellow Alsatians; namely, Anthony HAHN and Michael AMANN families from Schirrhein and probably within visiting distance to others from their homeland.

In the 1830 Federal Census, we find residing as neighbors in Plain Township (near Canton, OH), Stark County, Ohio these families of which some are probably from Schirrhein, France. Here enumerated in sequence are: [Line 20]: Michael Lehman (sic) ["L" looks like an "S"]; [Line 21]: Michael Amen (sic-Amann); [Line 22]: Anthony Hahn; [Line 23] Ignatius King; [Line 24] Michael Mertz; [Line 25] Martin Wise. This census merely gives place of residence, the name and age of the head of the family, and age categories and sex of individuals.

Nicolas Lehmann (brother of Michel) married Marie Ann Biam (sister of Marie Madeleine) did not emigrate at the same time as Michel for some unknown reason. However, Nicholas did eventually join Michel some years later in Stark County, but perhaps rather briefly. Nicholas' family went to Seneca County, Ohio.

Michel Lehmann, given as an alien named Michael Layman, became a naturalized citizen in May of 1837 when he took the Oath of Allegiance. With Michael taking the oath, Marie Madeleine and all the children under 21 years of age became citizens automatically. Martin, the eldest, was 16 years of age at the time.

Friday, 5th May 1837

"Now comes Christian Witt, John Creps, Michael Layman [sic], and Michael Miller natives of France within the dominions of the King of France and proves by the records of this Court that more than 2 years ago to wit the said Michael Miller, Michael Layman, and Christian Witt at the August term of this Court AD 1834 and the said John Creps at the April term of this Court AD 1833 they filed the requisite declaration of their intention to become citizens of the U. States and further prove to the satisfaction of this Court that they have resided within the United States for the term of 5 years last past and within the state of Ohio during the last year and that during the time aforesaid they have behaved as men of good moral character attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same and the said Christian Witt, John Creps, Michael Layman, and Michael Miller now here in open Court declare on oath that they will support the Constitution of the United States and that they do absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign prince potentate state or sovereignty whatever and particularly to the King of France to whom they were heretofore subjects. Therefore it is ordered that a certificate of naturalization issue to them-----on payment of the costs of this proceeding."

Soon after, Michel/Michael apparently decided to leave Stark County for Shelby County, Ohio, while other countrymen eventually headed to Seneca County, Ohio; Wyandot County, Ohio; Missouri, and elsewhere. So it was that Martin Lehmann joined his parents and siblings in the trek to Shelby County, Ohio. Here their destination was a fledgling English community and which became known as Berlin (aka Loramies and later known as Ft. Loramie), where in 1838 would be established St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Here they set up their homestead in the wilds of McLean Township, where swampy, mosquito infested lands lay in wait. Here in McLean Township just outside the village of Berlin lay the rich, claylike soil where the Lehmann family would reside, and would later use this clay soil in the making of bricks and tiles.

At the time of the 1840 United States Federal Census, we find Martin with his parents and siblings in McLean Township, Shelby County, Ohio. His father was listed as Michael Layman (sic). [Note: The "L" resembles an "S" when looking at the original census. ASH]

It appears that the young couple resided in the family home of his parents, for in the 1850 Census of McLean Township, Shelby County, OH, we find the following information:

  • Michel/Michael Lehmann, the father, was listed as "Miguel Lahman," a "farmer" and head of the household, is listed as being born in "France" and being 60 years old with real estate valued at $700.
  • His wife, Marie Madeleine (Biam) Lehmann, was listed as "Malinda Lahman", now 59 years old, and also born in "France."
  • Their eldest son, Martin Michael Lehmann, was listed as "Martin", a "farmer" on the same property, age 30, and born in "France."
  • Martin's wife, Katharine (Reichert) Lehmann, was listed as "Catharine Lahman", age 21, born in "Germany".
  • Martin and Katharina's daughter, Maria Magdelena Elizabeth, was 3 months old "Maria," who was listed erroneously as being born in "France." [It is extremely doubtful that Maria's birthplace is correct.]
  • Christian Joseph Lehmann, youngest son of Michel and Marie Madeleine, was listed as 16 year old "Joseph Lahman" working as an "operative" on the farm. His birthplace is also given as "France," but research facts and data have proven that his birthplace was Stark County, OH, where he was also baptized.

On 1 October 1851 Michel/Michael Lehmann wrote his Last Will and Testament. As was common in this time period, according to Michel's will, Martin Lehmann, as the eldest son, inherited the homestead, farm and land. However, according to provisions in the will, Martin had to provide a monetary inheritance to his brother and sisters in the years following Michel's and Marie Madeleine's death. Michel died in 1853 and Marie Madeleine died in 1859, both in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio where they evidently went to live among their transplanted children. They were original buried in the now defunct St. Henry's Cemetery and later reburied in Calvary Cemetery in Dayton.

As time passes, we find that Martin purchased more land in Shelby County, Ohio. At one time, he operated a tile yard across the road from his homestead. The lay of land along the side of this homestead gives evidence to the harvesting of the clay soil used in the firing of bricks and tile. According to the children of John Michael Lehmann, John told stories of working and making bricks in perhaps what was known as the Lehmann and Moller (aka Mueller) Tile Yard. Family stories by Mary Catherine (Mills) Lehmann, dau-in-law of Martin Lehmann, indicate that the original homestead was replaced with a two story brick house about 1880, which in 2010 has been beautifully renovated with additions. As a result of moving into this brick home in 1880, it was told that Katharina, wife of Martin, came down with pneumonia and as a result died 12 May 1880.
