NICOLAS LEHMANN1 (later known as Nicholas LEHMANN) was son of Michel LEHMANN [Sr.]2 and his first wife, Catharine SCHOTT3, both of Schirrhein, Bas-Rhin (Alsace), France4 (aka Schirrheim, Elsas, Germany)5. Nicolas Lehmann was born 4 March 1789 likely in Schirrhein, France. However, when his brother, Michel, was married in 1818 Nicholas' age was given as 25y, which would make his birth in 1793.

Nicolas Lehmann married 18 August 1812 to MARIE ANN BIAM (aka PIAM) at St. Nicolas Catholic Church. Marie Ann, daughter of Ignace BIAM8 and Catharina VETTER, was born about 1790-1791. Her sister, Marie Madeleine BIAM, married Nicolass brother, Michel LEHMANN.

Like his father before him, Nicolas & Marie Ann were members of St. Nicolas Catholic Church, the catalyst for religious values of the Catholic community of Schirrhein. The photos below show the reconstructed church after the old church was destroyed during the liberation of France during World War II in 1945.9

St. Nicolas Catholic Church9 crest indicates that the old church was originally built in Schirrhein in 1752, but the Catholic community and congregation was probably established before that. It was the church where most of the village inhabitants were baptized, confirmed, and attended services. Based upon records found at St. Nicolas, we can probably safely assume that our LEHMANN ancestors were Catholic and worshiped regularly at this church, except perhaps during those early and late warring times, when many families left the Alsace area in fear.10

Evidently in 1828 Nicolas & his brother, Michel Lehmann, made plans to emigrate. They received passports to leave France and emigrate to America. However, Nicolas and his wife and family did not leave with his brother, Michel. Michel, and wife (Marie Magdelena) and family settled in Plain Township, Stark County, Ohio by 1830.

Nicolas and his family left in July 1831 according to manifest records. They, too, settled in Stark County, Ohio, where he and his family were enumerated in Sandy Township in the 1840 Census.

His brother, Michel/Michael, took the Oath of Allegiance in 1837 and Nicolas/Nicholas followed about 1845. After this, both families went their separate ways. Nicholas and his family moved to Seneca County, Ohio while brother, Michel/Michael left for Shelby County, Ohio, probably never to meet again.

Nicolas/Nicholas and Marie Ann were the parents of these children: Joseph, Madeleine, Marie Ann, Anton/Anthony, Jean/John, Johanna/Hannah, Bathazar/Balser, & Catherine.
