VISIT:
SCHIRRHEIN & SCHIRRHOFFEN, BAS-RHIN, FRANCE

This LEHMANN FAMILY homepage is dedicated to four very special ladies in my life:
my mother, Rita Marie (LEHMANN) SHIELDS;
my grandmother, Mary Catherine (MILLS) LEHMANN;
my aunt & godmother, Henrietta (LEHMANN) QUINLISK;
& a dear aunt, who became 2nd mother to all her nieces and nephews, Gertrude (LEHMANN) BEIHL.

I am in the process of working on this LEHMANN Family and their ancestors, descendants & connected families. If anyone can make a connection to this family, please write me (Audrey) by clicking on the hyperlink below. Also, you are welcome to join in the LEHMANN of Alsace Discussion List. You may subscribe by sending e-mail to YahooGroups: Lehmann of Alsace.

PLEASE NOTE: Once this family arrived in America many of their descendants began spelling the surname as LEHMAN, LAYMAN, LAYMON, & other variants. My grandfather insisted that his surviving nine of eleven children always use the LEHMANN surname, while many of his aunts and uncles and their siblings switched to the LEHMAN spelling.

You may also wish to join in the Discussion Group for Schirrhein. You may subscribe by sending e-mail to: YahooGroups: SchirrheinConnection, or access the SCHIRRHEIN Homepage of Sharon PETERS at The Schirrhein Connection.

It should also be remembered that on U.S.A. official records, I have seen France, Germany, & even Prussia claimed as their homeland. This results from the various wars and occupations of both the French and the German governments. This is why many of our ancestors left the area. Even some of the Amish and Mennonite peoples from Switzerland are known to have lived for a time in Alsace before immigrating to America.

How does the family of the Joseph LEHMANN at the bottom connect to the family of Johannes/Jean/John LEHMANN?

In 1730 there was a burgermeister/heimburger in Schirrhein by the name of Jakob LEHMANN. How is Jakok related to this family?

Her parents are given as Ignaii / Ignace BIAM and Catherine VETTER also of Schirrhein and witnesses included: Simon SCHITTER, Joseph ? (maybe Joseph LEHMANN), Chretien RICHTER, and Nicolas LEHMANN. Michel & Marie Madeleine (aka Mary Magdelena, Helena, Malinda) were the immigrant ancestors of my family. They arrived from the LeHarve, France at Port of New York on 6 Sep 1828 aboard the L'Esperance/Esperiance. By 1830 they were living in Plain Twp., Stark Co., OH where Michel took the Oath of Allegiance in May 1837. It appears soon after taking the oath, he and Mary left for Ft. Loramie (then Berlin), Shelby County, OH where they had purchased land and then built a homestead. Marie Madeleine BIAM was the sister of Marie Anne BIAM who married Michel's brother, Nicolas LEHMANN. They were the daughters of Ignace BIAM & Catharina VETTER. Nicolas also immigrated to the United State, but at a later date than Michel.
Seek information on the BIAM & VETTER family connections.
Michael LEHMANN took the Oath of Allegiance , renouncing the King of France on "Friday, 5th May 1837" thus giving up his and his family's French citizenship.

"Now comes Christian Witt, John Creps, Michael Layman [sic], and Michael Miller natives of France within the domi- nions of the King of France and proves by the records of this Court that more than 2 years ago to wit the said Michael Miller, Michael Layman, and Christian Witt at the August term of this Court AD 1834 and the said John Creps at the April term of this Court AD 1833 they filed the requisite declaration of their intention to become citizens of the U. States and further prove to the satisfaction of this Court that they have resided within the United States for the term of 5 years last past and within the state of Ohio during the last year and that during the time aforesaid they have behaved as men of good moral character attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States and well dis- posed to the good order and happiness of the same and the said Christian Witt, John Creps, Michael Layman, and Michael Miller now here in open Court declare on oath that they will support the Constitution of the United States and that they do absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign prince potentate state or sovereignty whatever and particularly to the King of France to whom they were heretofore subjects. Therefore it is ordered that a certificate of naturalization issue to them----- on payment of the costs of this proceeding."

It was a short time after taking the Oath of Allegiance for himself and his family, that the Michael LEHMANN family ventured forth into Shelby Co., OH. Here they purchased land and a homestead was built in Ft. Loramie, and here they were one of the early pioneer parishioners of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Ft. Loramie.
Later, a daughter, Mary Magdelena (LEHMANN/LEHMAN) HOCHWALT of Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH, would recall the following which was written in a Bible. It appears whoever made the entry was unaware of a deceased sibling left behind in Schirrhein. It also appears that Mary would have been closer to four years of age.

It is not known if Michael LEHMANN had any other occupation than farmer. Passport records indicate that Michael was a "Journalier" (day laborer). However, it is known that his son, Martin Michael LEHMANN, had operated a brick yard and/or tile yard. Possibly this skill was taught to him by his father, Michael. Michael may have worked as a brick/tile maker in France and passed this skill onto his son, Martin. Maybe Michael even had a tile yard in those early days in Ft. Loramie, Shelby Co., OH. As one travels throughout France one observes the prominence of tile roofs, and tile and bricks were associated with the craft of glassmaking in France. Also, this tile yard was located across the road from the LEHMANN homestead in Ft. Loramie.

This is further supported on pages 30 and 97 of "Early History of Fort Loramie" where one reads:

Page 30 "Along with the ditches came the tiles that would drain the stump infested swampy land. The poisonous swamp water bred countless mosquitoes, and created a serious typhoid fever and malaria environment. It kept the farmer from using the rich soil underneath. McLean Twp. had the clay, and soon had the tile mills to make the tiles. Among the early tile makers were: Waglers' brick and tile and Adam Daniel. Three predecessors at Gregor Fleckenstein location: Klinehens and Vocke; J. H. Holthous, Lehman (sic) and Moller; Ferdinand Ratherman, three and a half miles east of Berlin [now Ft. Loramie ASH]." There were over 3,000 acres of swamp land. It took years to clean out these swamps before the lands could be farmed.

Page 97 "On the west side of the canal Joseph Rieger operated a store for boots and shoes. Philip Anthony manufactured and repaired wagons, while Lehman (sic) and Moeller operated a tile mill west of Loramie Creek."

The Falter-Scharf Family From About 1585

By
Vincent Falter

Anundsen Publishing Company
Decorah, Iowa

Vince Falter gives the following information:

"After 15+ years of work and multiple research (and great vacation) trips to Luxembourg, various parts of Germany, and to Alsace and Lorraine, France, The Falter-Scharf Family From About 1585 has been delivered to me.

The Falter-Scharf family history is printed in two high-quality, hardback, 8 x 12 inch volumes printed on 60 lb. acid-free paper.

They are organized as follows:
  • Vol. 1 Falter and Falter ancestors.
    This book contains chapters on the following primary families, who were early settlers in Stark County, Seneca County, and Delphos-Landeck part of Allen County, Ohio area:
    • Falter (both the Ohio and Chicago lines from Nack, Germany)
    • Ardner (from Mittelbexbach, Germany)
    • Bonifas (from Nospelt, Luxembourg)
    • Gengler (from Nospelt, Luxembourg)
    • Koerner (from Nack, Germany
    • Steinmetz (from Schirrhein and Schirrhoffen, Bas Rhin, Alsace)

  • Vol. 2 Scharf and Scharf ancestors.
    This book contains chapters on the following primary families, also well-known in the Delphos-Landeck area:
    • Scharf (from Nack, Germany)
    • Hummer (from Niederkorn, Luxembourg)
    • Kihm (from Walsheim, Rheinheim, and Gersheim, Germany)
    • Groff (from Alsace, France)
    • Müller/Mueller/Miller (from Rheinheim and Gersheim, Germany)
    • Descendants (to mid 2001)

The titles of the above chapters indicate the names of our ancestral families that are known to have immigrated to the United States in the period 1831-1846. Of course, there are literally hundreds of other families included in the books. They are our ancestors who preceded the immigrant families and they are researched to the point where the records in Europe no longer exist. They go back 400+ years to about 1585. They have been researched and are written up in great detail in some cases, depending on the information available. Other families listed are those of persons who married into the families listed in the chapter headings here in the United States over the last 150 years.

I knew that this was going to be a big job, but never realized how BIG until I finished it. All told, it contains about 1,150 pages and has a 64-page index of the 11,000+ persons recorded in the book. It also contains the detailed and extensive pedigrees of both the Falter and Scharf families back to their earliest known ancestors in the 1500s.

The two volumes contain over 200 photographs, illustrations, maps, tables, diagrams, charts, plus many, many family stories. Most of the source material came from wills, and probate, parish, vital, land, military, and census records in the various countries. The original Latin, French, and German in which those records were written have been translated into English.

These books are more than a recitation of who our great-grandparents were, who their parents were, and who the children of countless generations were. The books also contain the relevant essential history of the families in the context of the histories of Luxembourg, and Hessen and the Bavarian Pfalz of today's Germany, as well as Lorraine and Alsace, France. They also contain the histories of the many towns and villages in which our ancestors lived from the 1500s until the 1930s, plus information on their occupations and how they lived. This information has been translated from the original German and French.

The books are available for shipment immediately. The cost for the two volumes is:

$ 102.50 for both books
$ 12.25 shipping, packing, and handling
$ 114.75 total

Most of our family and researchers are primarily interested in the families contained in only one of the volumes and want to add only that volume to their library. In that case the cost for one volume (your choice, Falter or Scharf) is only:

$ 51.25 cost of one book
$ 8.80 shipping, packing, and handling
$ 59.05 total

If you want to order a book,
  1. let me know which volume, Falter or Scharf (or both) that you want.
  2. Send me the mailing address to which you want the Volume(s) shipped.
  3. Send a check for $ 59.05 for either volume or $ 114.75 for both volumes to:
