From the �History of the Descendants of John HOTTEL�, on www.genealogylibrary.com, concerning the history of Jacob NORTON: �His father was an Englishman who went to live in Germany and married a German woman. Jacob served in the War of the Revolution as an aid on General Washington�s staff. Possessing some skill in the care of the sick and believing much in hygienic treatment for the ills that flesh is heir to, he had the opportunity to put his faith into practice at this time. A plague broke out in the army which seemed to baffle the skill of the army physicians. Jacob asked permission to prepare food for those afflicted on the staff and it was granted him. The result was marvelous. General Washington then requested him to go among the troops and order this sort of food for all afflicted. It had the desired effect and in a very short time the army was able to move on, for which deed he was amply rewarded by Washington. The story is handed down to posterity that he came to Bristol, Ohio with a heaping half bushel of silver money. After his death a distribution of it was made to his children and handed down to grandchildren, who had much of it made into silverware or exchanged it for the same.� According to a 1913 biographical sketch on Ephraim B. Norton in a Dodge Co, WI, newspaper, Jacob was an immigrant from the Alsace region of France. Jacob and Barbara moved to Shenandoah Co, VA where they remained until about 1806, then moving to Ohio, settling in the north part of Bristol Twp, Trumbull Co, OH, on a farm later owned by his 11 children. According to the �History of Trumbull & Mahoning Counties�, pub 1882, Jacob had been married 1st in VA, having sons, John and Jacob, with Barbara being his 2nd wife with the above ch.
