Connie Duke

This website is dedicated to the memory of Connie Duke (Misenar) who's devoted efforts over a span of more than 50-years, in collaboration with Audrey Hancock (a Misner family descendent), has made this wealth of family history available online to all. It was her wish to foster an increased amount of interest in others to help expand the available information for generations yet to come.

and

THE MISNER, MISENER, MISENAR, MIZNER, MIZENER & MEISNER
FAMILY OF NORTH AMERICA

The following pages are an accummulation of many years of work gathering information on the families thru census records, letters to and from many researchers, and surfing the web looking for more and more information. With this in mind, please remember that not all of this information has been verified by me. When information differs between researchers or me or records have differed, I have included the different dates or information.

Although this is an alphabetical list of names - male and female - each name may not necessarily be in alphabetical order. For instance, Francis and Franklin are grouped together with Frank since that is a common nickname for the other two. Herbert and Hubert are together as well as Ray and Raymond, Allen and Alan, plus Catherine and Katherine, and many others. I have tried to streamline this information by making it easier to find individuals. There was much intermarrying among the families, especially in Canada, so you will find many others with brackets around their birth years indicating also they will be found in another place. If there was more than one spouse, they are shown as 1) and 2), etc. Children of the female members of the family are shown as Ch: (1), (2), etc.; grandchildren shown as ch: (a), (b), etc. Sometimes, if I have information on further generations, they will be indicated by (2 ch) or (2 ch living). Any further generations will be indicated with the statement Additional information is available. under NOTE: at the end. Question marks (?) indicate there is a question about the information. A question mark by a date indicates my estimation as no date is available.

Also included in this listing is information on some MESNER, MESSNER, MISEMER, MEISNER and MEISSNER families which I have encountered in my searches although I have not actively researched these names. Please note, researchers, that you cannot take the spelling of the last names for granted. Most of the families that I have researched had different spellings thru the years. Even today there are different spellings within families. My own MISENAR family has also the spellings of MISNER and MIZENER. Even though the Canadian family descends from a common ancestor, they have the spellings of MISNER, MISENER, MIZENER, MUISENER and MUISINER. I have also encountered members of the family with the names spelled as NISNER, WISNER, and WIZER, although only in a few instances. The very early records of NY, NJ and PA have some very different variations of the name also.

The majority of the real old families from before 1800 seem to have had ties to New Jersey in some way. In 1710 the families of Sebastian MAISINGER and Conrad MAISINGER arrived with the Palantines and settled in the Bergen Co., NJ area. In a few years Conrads family were found in the Somerset Co., NJ area and it has been speculated that their name was changed to MIZNER or MIESNER. The New Jersey Historical Society has claimed that the families of Bergen, Somerset and Sussex Counties, NJ, were from the same family. The Sussex Co., NJ family was started by Richard and Elizabeth MISNER about 1740 when it was still Morris Co, NJ. According to their family history they had immigrated to America about 1720 but no immigration record has been found for Richard or his three known sons, per his will of 1762, named Nicholas, Adam and Henrich/Henry. Adam was born in 1710 and died in 1814. Interestingly, Conrad MAISINGERs oldest son was Hans Adam, b. 1709/1710. See the entry for Conrad for a list of his other children. Today, the name of MAISINGER has become, as far as can be determined, MEISINGER or MESSENGER. A few times I have also found MISNER and MIZENER family members with the spelling of MEISINGER.

At this time I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped me put this information together. Without your willingness to share, I would never have been able to get as far as I have and I am greatly indebted to you. The Canadian information was obtained from Donna KEMP at [email protected], the MISNER/MISENER Family Historian. They have a family reunion every year, usually the 3rd Saturday of August. Contact JANET FEAR, for further information and to register.

The MISNER/MISENER family of Grundy and Kendall Counties of IL also celebrate a reunion each year, usually the 2nd Sunday of June and have been doing so for over 104 years now. The MEISSNER/MEISNER information of Nova Scotia was obtained from research done by Crystal PYE and Maureena JORDAN located at http://freepages.living.rootsweb.com/~jordain/pafg01.htm and research of Rodney MISENER at http://misener2002.tripod.com/names/htm and is included with their permission.

If any errors are found or if you have additional information on any of the families, please contact Connie Duke at [email protected]. I welcome all corrections and additions with the hope of someday being able to figure out this huge puzzle.

REVISED 2003 TO ADD INFORMATION REGARDING THE MEISNER - MEISSNER FAMILIES OF NOVA SCOTIA and to update many of the existing entries.

DISCLAIMER:

The information contained in this record should only be used as a guide or "working genealogy." You should validate or reconfirm your lineage from this listing by Connie Duke, a seasoned researcher. Only through continual research and finding legal records, known as primary resources, will one's genealogy be more exact. At times, when all is said and done, we must rely upon one's own family information and preponderance of what seems to be, but that needs to be stated. Please, therefore, use as a genealogical aid only.     Audrey
