JACOB ROLL, son of Abraham ROLL & Mary BROOKS, was born 08 November 1761 Essex County (now Union County), New Jersey. He married ca 1782 probably in Union County, NJ to (1) Elizabeth MILLS. Jacob owned the Grist Mill in New Providence, NJ for several years. After Elizabeth died, he married 1810 at New Providence, Elizabeth Twp., Union County, New Jersey to (2) Nancy "Ann" PICKET/PECKET; then sold the mill and moved to Hamilton Co., OH. Later he and members of his family removed to Clark Co., OH where he died 25 September 1834 in Bethel Township, Clark County, Ohio and is buried there in the New Carlisle Cemetery. Elizabeth "Betsey" (Mills) Roll, dau/o of William MILLS I & Amy [--?--] of Westfield Twp., Union Co., NJ, was born 22 Mar 1764 and died 18 Nov 1806. Elizabeth's gravestone is next to that of Jacob's niece, Abbygil (ROLL) DUNHAM at the Scotch Plains Baptist Church Cemetery, Scotch Plains, Union County, New Jersey.

Elizabeth is an ancestral paternal grandmother and ancestral maternal aunt of Audrey (SHIELDS) HANCOCK, as both parents descend from William (I) & Amy [--?--] MILLS.

JAMES ROLL, son of John ROLL and Mary EARL, married Mary CLARK. Mary, said daughter of Abraham CLARK & Sarah HORTON, ws born 1793 and died 6 November 1813 at 20y 26d. James and Mary had a son named John ROLL b 1813. Mary (CLARK) ROLL is buried in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery at 19 Church Mall, Springfield, New Jersey, which is across the street from the Springfield Emanuel United Methodist Church, 40 Church Mall, Springfield, NJ, where other ROLL families are buried. Her gravestone is about 50 feet directly in from the main gate.

JAMES ROLL/RAWLE, son of Brooks ROLL & Phebe ROSS, was born 11 April 1787 Essex Co., NJ; married Catherine DUNHAM; and died 2 July 1871. Catherine, dau/o David DUNHAM & his unknown second wife; born 8 May 1792 Essex Co., NJ and died 16 August 1865. James and Catherine were married 20 November 1808 in Westfield Presbyterian Church, Westfield, Union Co., NJ, and they lived in Westfield, Essex Co. [later Union Co.], NJ. Both are buried in the MILLER-ROLL Cemetery in Westfield, Union Co., NJ. This cemetery is located on Springfield Avenue in the northwest corner of the township near the Cranford boundary. It is on the side of a steep hill behind #210 Springfield Avenue on private property.

JAMES W. ROLL, son of James ROLL and Catherine DUNHAM, was born 4 October 1816; married Hattie M. SMITH; died 6 September 1875; buried at the Springfield Emanuel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Church Mall, Springfield, New Jersey in Plot #29. The map in the office in 2000 reads: "T. Roll's - Sell."

JOHN W. ROLL, s/o Silas ROLL (1810-1871) & Fannie WILSON (1813-1839), was born 25 Jul 1836. John served during the Civil War in the Ohio Cavalry, Co. I, 4th Regt., OH, from 4 Oct. 1861 to 20 Oct. 1864. He was wounded by bushwhackers while scouting along Taint Rock Creek in the state of Alabama on 1 Aug. 1862, receiving a shot in the forehead, the ball passing between the skull and the scalp-exiting the back of the head. John married 21 Dec 1865 in Butler Co., OH to Martha Jane CARR. He was a farmer in Butler County, Ohio; and he died 17 May 1908 in the Village of Oxford, Butler Co., OH. He is buried in the Oxford Township Cemetery in Butler County, Ohio.

Martha Jane CARR, daughter of Samuel CARR (1805-1890) & Eleanor MOORE (1809-1891), was born born 31 Dec 1839; died 17 Dec 1924 Butler Co., OH; and buried Oxford Twp. Cemetery, Butler Co., OH.

  1. Arthur Carr ROLL (Dr./Physician), b Mar 1868 Butler Co., OH; m 20 Dec 1892 to Aurilla "Rilla" ELLIOTT.
