THE VARIANT SPELLINGS of the SURNAME

From different records and recordings the surname is found with various spellings: RHEUBERT, RHEUBART, RUBERT, RUBART, RUBIRT, RUBIRD, etc. and thus different branches of the family have adopted different spellings especially in the early days when many were illiterate and didn't know the correct spelling for their surnames. They adopted the spelling given to them by a record keeper.

WILLIAM LUTHER RUBERT & SARAH FRANCES SMITH

WILLIAM LUTHER RUBERT was the son of Isaac Jacob Rheubart (abt. 1820-1874) and Sarah "Sally" "Sallie" Clymer (1828-1904). In 1850 Isaac and Sarah resided in Madison Township, Tipton County, Indiana. William was born 7 February 1856 likely there in Tipton County, Indiana.

Here in Madison Township William Luther Rubert grew to adulthood. Like most sons in those days, he more than likely worked beside his father and brothers on the family farm to provide for their livelihood, and perhaps upon reaching his majority he sought work elsewhere until he married.

It appears that sometime between 1880 and 1886, William Luther married an unknown first wife. According to the 1910 U. S. Federal Census William Luther Rubert is enumerated as having married twice.

William married 23 May 1886 in Tipton County, Indiana to SARAH FRANCES SMITH, daughter of John T. Smith (1834-1910) and Elizabeth Jane Butler (1845-1929).

There is no 1890 U. S. Federal Census with which to learn more, so that part of William Luther Rubert's and Sarah Frances Smith Rubert's history is left to speculation. It appears that perhaps before or after marriage William was able to purchase some land, inherited land, or farmed as a share cropper for another in Madison County, Indiana. Here in Duck Creek Township the young couple moved and created a home on a farm for their family. By the 1900 Census, William and Sarah were already the parents of six children.
