Daniel "Dan" (aka Daniel Alexander7 HARRIS, Jr.), s/o Daniel Alexander HARRIS, Sr. and Lorraine Jane6 SHIELDS (Emery Earl5, George James4, George William3, Patrick 2, Daniel1 SHIELDS) and his wife, Georgia (dec'd 2005), of Shellsburg, Iowa ask, "Could our Daniel be one of the issue of four not named in this article? As Charles was born in 1734, and our Daniel was born in 1741. Could they possibly have been brothers? In the Rotunda of Washington, D.C., we found a statue of Gen. James SHIELDS that looked like my uncle, Jesse Shields."

Daniel SHIELDS I, a Catholic, and his four sons fought in the Battle of Boyne in 1690 on the losing side...that of King James II. The father and one son were killed, and two of the surviving sons migrated after the war. One is said to Spain where he became Capt. Gen. of Cuba. Daniel, the youngest, remained in Ireland, but suffered from confiscation and banishment visited on the Catholic soldiers of dethroned King William of Orange (the victor).

Research at PRONI
in
Belfast, Ireland
by
Audrey (Shields) Hancock & Karen (Shields) Richey
has the following:

Charles SHIELDS (????-1812) m Katherine/Anne McDONNELL d 1842. (One source indicates that the father of Charles was Patrick Shields.)
Children of Charles & Katherine/Anne:
  1. (Gen.) James SHIELDS b 6 May 1806
  2. Daniel SHIELDS b 2 Apr 1808
  3. Patrick SHIELDS b 17 Mar 1810

Putting the two resources together, it appears the lineage could look like this:

...1. Daniel SHIELDS I fought and died at Battle of Boyne ca 1690, Ireland.
........1. Unknown SHIELDS died Battle of Boyne, Ireland.
........2. Unknown SHIELDS survived Battle of Boyne, Ireland and perhaps migrated elsewhere.
........3. Unknown SHIELDS survived the Battle of Boyne, removed to Spain, and said to have become a Capt. General of Cuba.
........4. Daniel SHIELDS II survived the Battle of Boyne (perhaps the son said to have remained in Ireland) m 1695 and had an issue of two:
............a. Daniel SHIELDS b 1697; married a girl whom he had romantically rescued from drowning and settled on mountain land at Altmore (alias Barracktown), County Tyrone, and they had an issue of four.
................(1) Charles SHIELDS (1734-1812) married Katherine/Anne McDONNELL (d 1842) (Research: PRONI Records, Belfast, Ireland by ASH) [NOTE: Another source states a Patrick Shields was father of Charles, but records at PRONI validate that his father was a Daniel Shields. ASH]
Children of Charles & Katherine/Anne:
.....................(a) James SHIELDS born 6 May 1806, immigrated to the United States, was a Civil War general, died Ottuma, Iowa, & was buried at Carrollton, Missouri.
(Research: PRONI Records, Belfast, Ireland by ASH & KSR)
[Some biographies of James b 1806, say his uncle was James Shields b 1762 who would be the Hon. James Shields from Ireland to Virginia finally to Butler Co., OH. I have not found validation of any such relationship for the two Jameses in any Irish or U.S.A. records. ASH]
.....................(b) Daniel SHIELDS born 2 April 1808
(Research: PRONI Records, Belfast, Ireland by ASH & KSR)
.....................(c) Patrick SHIELDS born 17 March 1810
(Research: PRONI Records, Belfast, Ireland by ASH & KSR)
................(2) Unknown SHIELDS
................(3) Unknown SHIELDS
................(4) Unknown SHIELDS
............b. James SHIELDS born 1699

Relationships Unknown

Perhaps Daniel Shields of Battle of Boyne, 1690; Hon. James Shields from Ireland to Virginia and onto Butler Co., OH; Gen. James Shields from Ireland of Civil War fame; and/or Daniel Shields b 1741 from Ireland to Butler Co., OH are related. Only by having descendants join in the SHIELDS Y-DNA Project and/or having a complete knowledge of lineages will family connections be learned. ASH
