HENRY TECKLENBURG was son of emigrants, Henry TECKLENBERG1 from Hesse, Germany and Katharine HINDERS fom Oldenburg, Germany. Henry (the son) was born 25 December 1849 possibly in Hamilton County, Ohio. The family was living in Hamilton County at the time of the 1850 United States Federal Census.

The Tecklenburg parents have not been found in the 1860 nor 1870 United States Federal Census. However in the 1870 census dated 13 July 1870, 20 year old Henry TECKLENBERG (sic) is enumerated as residing in Napoleon, Henry County, Ohio with the family of Fred SHONER, a 28 year old saddler and harness maker who was born in Prussia. At this time, Henry was given as being an apprentice saddler who was born in Ohio. This is surely Henry, s/o Henry, as later we find Henry owning a saddle shop and livery.

Henry TECKLENBURG2, a saddler, had a harness shop in 1877 in the village of Berlin (aka Loramies then Ft. Loramie). Here he made, repaired, and/or sold saddles. Here he made or sold harnesses, bridles, and other furnishings for horses. Here in the village of Berlin he met and courted his future wife.

Henry TECKLENBURG married 09 October 1879 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Berlin (aka Loramies then Ft. Loramie), Shelby County, Ohio to KATHARINA/KATHARINE/CATHERINE "Kate" MARIA/MARY LEHMANN, daughter of Martin Michael LEHMANN and Agatha/Agnes Katharina REICHERT.

Katharina (Katharine/Catherine) was born 28 January 1860 probably in McLean Township, Shelby County, Ohio. Her family lived on their homestead just south and outside of the village of Berlin in McLean Township along the County Turnpike (now W. Park St./County #705) and across the road from Loramie Creek. See map below.
[Note: 2009, The LEHMANN brick home is still standing, but has been beautifully remodeled and updated. Noticeable at the back is the terraced looking part of the lawn where clay soil was once removed and used by the Lehmann & Moeller Brick & Tile Yard3.]

Homestead of "M. LEHMAN" (Michel LEHMANN from Schirrhein, Alsace, France to Ohio)
This homestead passed to Michael's eldest son, Martin Michael LEHMANN.
He was father/o Katharina (LEHMANN) TECKLENBURG,, my grandfather John Michael LEHMANN, and others.
The map appears to reflect the site of the brick home built by Martin Michael Lehmann abt. 1880.

At the time of the 1880 United States Federal Census, Henry and his family resided in the village of Berlin. He was still working as a saddler, and had taken on an apprentice. He and Katharine/Catherine were the parents of their first born son, Albert Michael TECKLENBURG.

Henry purchased the Vondrele House (aka Vondrelle Hotel) which was built in 1869 by Joseph VONDRELE/VONDRELLE4, operated in 1878 by John FRENCH and sometime later operated by the EILERMAN/ELLERMAN family.5 The 1880 U. S. Census shows Christopher HAISCH and wife operating the hotel with Joseph VONDRELE/VONDRELLE enumerated next. Henry's purchase was in 18906 at which time it became known as the Tecklenburg House amd eventually as the Tecklenburg Hotel. Together Henry & Katharine operated the Tecklenburg Hotel in Ft. Loramie (aka Berlin and Loramies), Shelby County, Ohio. They also operated the beer garden and had a livery stable associated with the their enterprise. Through the years local people and family members worked at the hotel.7

When the village of Berlin was incorporated in May 1889, it became known as Loramies for a time (later Ft. Loramie). The first election of town officers was held on 29 July 1889 at which time Albert HASEBROOK [wife, Clara nee LEHMANN, sis/o Katharine/Catherine (nee LEHMANN] TECKLENBURG) was town mayor. Also, in this election, Henry TECKLENBURG was elected treasurer.3

There is no 1890 United States Federal Census. By this time, Henry and Katharine/Catherine were the parents of three sons and a daughter, namely: Albert Michael born 1879, Gerhard born 1881, Clara born 1883, and John born 1886.
