The Green

The Green/e line I am researching begins in Haverhill, MA where Nathaniel Green was born 5 June 1720, son of Peter and Martha (Singletary) Green.  Nathaniel was a peruke maker (wigmaker).  Nathaniel married 16 Jul 1741 at Haverhill, MA, Mary Buck who died 8 Oct 1741 at Haverhill, MA. Nathaniel Green, m.(2) 17 Jan 1744-5 at Leicester, MA, Lucy Garfield, born 05 Oct 1725 at Westminster, MA and bapt. 10 Oct 1725 as “Lucia” dau. of Samuel and Mary (Bowman) Garfield.  (See Bond’s History of Watertown, p. 234).  Nathaniel Green, perukemaker, died by 7 August 1810 based on his death notice from the New-Hampshire Patriot, Concord, (N.H.) of that date.

Children:

        1)   Peter, b. 1746, m. 07 Aug 1770 at Cambridge, MA, Elizabeth Bulkley, b. 29 Nov 1751 at Groton, MA, dau of Capt. John and Mary (Underwood) Bulkley.  Elizabeth (Bulkley) Green d. 1772 at Concord, NH.  “At Concord in the Province of New-Hampshire, Mrs. Elizabeth Green, age 22 years, wife of Peter Green, Esq. of that place, the youngest daughter of the late Colonel John Bulkley of Groton” (Appendix of Vol 1, p.61of the Groton Hist. Series, Dr. S.A.Green).  Peter Green d. 27 Mar 1798 at Concord, NH, age 52.  I believe this is Peter Greene in the 1775 New Hampshire Census at Concord, NH.  Peter is referred to as “a native of Worcester” in the History of Concord p. 961. From the History of Concord in the chapter “Deceased Lawyers,” it says, “His father is said to have been a barber.”

        2)           Mary, b. 25 Nov 1747/8

        3)           Jacob, b. 18 Jan 1749/50 at Worcester, MA, lived at Bow, NH.   Jacob m. 26 Sep 1776 at Concord, NH, Anna Hazeltine, b. 19 May, 1760, dau. of Joseph and Elizabeth (Abbot) Hazeltine. (IGI).  Jacob d. 17 Apr 1815, age 65.  Anna (Hazeltine) Green d. 13 Dec 1838 at Bow, NH.  (Evans Cem. Bow, NH).

        4)           Patty, b. 13 Mar 1752  Is this Martha, mother of James Green who m. Judith Colby 1801?  Dunbarton (NH) Warning Out:   “Martha Green and her son, James, warned out of Dunbarton 01 Apr 1779.  Formerly of Londondeary, the last place of abode.” Patty m. Capt. Phineas Bailey (int. Jul 1794) both of Dunbarton.   “06 Jul 1794, Then Cap’t Phineas Bayle was married to Ms. Martha Green, both of Dunbarton, by Job Seamans.”

        5)           Katy, b. 02 May 1754  Did she marry Samuel Bradley of Concord, NH, banns 14 Jul 1775?   Samuel Bradley, b. 1752, Haverhill?, s/o Timothy and Abiah (Stevens) Bradley, m. Catherine Green, d/o Nathaniel Green; d. Jan. 1826, aged 74, the grandfather of Gov. N.B.Baker. 

        6)         Nathaniel, b. 10 Oct 1757 at Leicester.

        7)          Lucy, b. 12 Apr 1760 at Leicester.  Is she the Lucy Green who m. 6 Feb 1783 (Hav VRs) Jonathan Souther, b. 17 Nov 1761 at Haverhill, MA, s/o Samuel and Mary (Goodwin) Souther?  Jonathan d. 7 Jan 1807 of consumption.  Lucy (Green) Souther d. 13 Sep 1830 of dysentery (a. 73).

        8)         Nathaniel, b. 1763 at Leicester. Nathaniel married 29 Sept 1785 at Concord, NH, (History of Pembroke, N. H., p.335) Ruth Fowler of Boscawen (probably b. 24 Jan 1766, dau. of Oliver & Sarah (   ) Fowler). Nathaniel, according to story of Nathaniel, Jr., died in 1808. But p.406 Deceased Lawyers, History of Concord, NH says, “he went to Virginia in 1811 where his death (1812) soon after occurred.”

        9)         Gardner, b. 25 Feb 1767 (Forests & Clearnings says b. 23 Feb 1767 at Concord, NH). “This was one of four brothers who engaged in the profession of the law in this State [NH].  He studied with his brother, Peter Green of Concord, and went into practice in Loudon before the year 1793, but remained there only a short time.  He married 20 May 1790, Deborah Boynton, b. 22 Feb 1777 at Loudon, NH, (Forests and Clearings, p. 188) d/o Maj. William and Mary (Gibson) Boynton [The Boynton Family, pp 37, 28, 29] or 25 Jul 1793  [p.406 Deceased Lawyers].  Boynton Family Genealogy says:  Settled in Bolton, P.Q.  He drowned in 1808, while attempting to cross Lake Champlain in a storm; his wid. afterwards m. Ezra Ball.  [Further info from David Lepitre, Your Ancestry, Stanstead.  Forests & Clearings:  It suggests Gardner came to Bolton, Que. in 1795, where he was a magistrate, before coming to Stanstead in 1799.]  Deborah (Boynton) Ball d. 18 Dec 1858 (Hist. of Brome, p. 247).

        10)         Samuel, b. 07 Mar 1770 at Concord, NH.  Admitted to the bar 1793; practiced, Concord, NH.  Judge 1819 - 1840.  (Deceased Lawyers, p.84/5).  Sources incidate he married first Lucretia Flagg  Samuel Green of Concord, m (2) 12 Mar 1796 at Chester, NH, Mary Coffin (NH Gazette).  Mary G. Coffin d. 28 Aug 1806, age 30, bur. Old North Cem. Concord.  He m(3) Ann Neveson (Wentworth) Wardrobe baptized on 17 April 1768, d/o Hugh Hall Wentworth and Penelope Jepson (Deceased Lawyers says he married Ann Wardrobe in August, 1810).  Ann N. Green d. 1834 and is buried at his side.  He retired in 1839 and died 22 Mar 1851 at Wash. D.C.  From the Daily National Intelligencer, of Tues. 25 Mar. 1851, “The funeral of the late Judge Samuel Green will take place from the house of Miss Briscoe, corner of 7th street and Pennsylvania avenue, to day, at half-past 3 o’clock.”
