Hi Betty, Thanks for responding.

First question I have for you is how do you know that your James Benjamin Green is connected to the William you mention prior to having the information you seek? Or do you just suspect he is?

Secondly. I think that some of the information I have on the Greens beyond my  3rd great grandfather Empsey Green is somewhat suspect. John Green who is said to have married Martha, ( whom we believe was a Hemphill ) is probably fairly certain as well, but who his father is, is where I begin to feel like it may be shaky ground.

I sending you and forwarding to the list as well a more detailed genealogy report that includes some notes from Bonnie Suell's book which happens to be my cousin and informant of most of what I have. Her work is not real well documented. Perhaps in the notes there will be some clues that will help

It appears that Bonnie felt that our William Green's ancestry were from the NJ branch of Greens.

"Tradition asserts that the Green family of Haywood County is a branch of that sturdy British stock that has been prominent in the affairs of Great Britain for generations. It was in the early colonial times that numbers of the Green family left their homes and came to America. Some settling in Rhode Island and others in New Jersey. It has been well authenticated that William Green, a descendant of the New Jersey families came into North Carolina a few years before the Revolutionary War and located in what was known later as the Jersey settlement on the eastern bank of the Yadkin River in Davidson County. He lived there during the period of the Revolutionary War, but it is not on record that he was a soldier. I do not know who William Green married or how many children he had, but from the records of the other Green families it would have been unusal if he didn't have a large family. I only know the name of one of his children."

"John Green was a son of Thomas Green,Sr. He was born about 1785 and came in the early part of the nineteenth century into what is now known as Macon County and built a home on the flats of Middle Creek. John Green may have been married twice because it is reported he married a Miss Hemphill. In the 1820 census John Green has a large family without a female old enough to be a mother. I believe he remarried before 1830 and had more children with a female old enough to have more children. In 1840 John Green,between 60-70 years of age with a female between 40-70 with one son between 20-30. In 1850
John is deceased or left and Martha Green age 65 is living with her son, Empsey Green and family in Macon Co. NC. Martha Green says she was born in Burke County. I have never found John and Martha Green's graves, but they lived in the flats of Middle Creek in Macon Co. NC."

LAND DEED OF EMPSEY GREEN

This indenture made and confirmed on the third day of one thousand eight hundred and forty witneseth that for and in consideration of the sum of thirty dollars to me in hand paid by Samuel Cabe. The receipt whereof acknowledged. I, Empsey Green of the county of Macon and the state of North Carolina have this day bargained and sold and conveyed and confirmed and by these presence do bargain, sell, convey and confirm to him the said Samuel Cabe two undivid-ed shares of a certain tract of land laying and being in said county in the 13th district lying on Middle Creek being section no.35, on which Martha Green now lives, the said tract having been conveyed by deed of gift from Thomas Green to the children of John Green (except one) by _______________ his wife Martha Green together with myself. Now I, the said Empsey Green do hereby convey and confirm the said two undivided shares, viz, mine and the one given to James Green to the said Samuel Cabe, together
with all woods, waters, mines, minerals and any other hereditament and appurtenances to the said land belonging as in otherwise pertaining to have and to hold to the said Samuel Cabe, his heirs and asigns forever and I hereby warant and defend the said land so sold to the said Samuel Cabe, his heirs , executors, administrators or asigns or any other person or persons
whatsoever.

"Empsey Green was born in Burke County NC in Aug. 1821. He was a son of John Green and Martha Hemphill Green of Burke County NC. He married Dicy Justice of Macon County NC. on 19 May 1847. Dicy Ann Justice was born about 1827.
Her parents were John and Margaret Justice of Bumcombe County NC. Empsey Green served in the Civil War using his own horse and received pay of 50.00 for 380 days for the use of his horse. Empsey was in the Confederate 6th cavalry Co. B 65th reg. NC troops (Cavalry). He enlisted at Hayesville NC and was discharged at Franklin NC. He moved to Oconee County SC after the war and lived out his life there. He fell off a rail fence and broke his back and died in 1901. Empsey is buried at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Oconee County SC. His wife Dicy Ann Justice Green died before he came to South Carolina. She is buried near Otto NC with two infant sons. They are buried at Cowetta Baptist Church Cemetery without markers. Dicy's brother, Andrew J. Justice is buried at Cowetta with a Civil War marker 6th NC Cavalry CSA. I believe Empsey and Dicy lost another child because near the old homeplace is a small tombstone that is unreadable and there is a daughter in the 1880 census that I have never heard anyone mention her name. The child is Elvria E. Green who was born in 1873. Empsey Green sold his share and a share he bought from James Green of the homeplace on the flats of Middle Creek in Macon County in 1848 to Samuel Cabe. Recorded in book H page 398. Franklin County NC Courthouse."

Bonnie Suell explained to me during a phone call on June 18, 1998, that there was a fued between Samuel and Mary. They separated from each other and lived that way for about 40 years, with one living at one of their children's home and the other living at another child's home.
