Other Civil War Documents
In researching the background of my ancestors who served in the Civil War, especially those who were captured and spent time as Prisoners of War, I ran across some material that might be of interest to others.
- Memoirs of John S. Swann - A Virginian who arrived at Fort Delaware just as Tom was leaving for home, Capt Swann tells a story very different than Tom's.
- Excerpts from the Diary of Francis A. Boyle - A comparison of life at Point Lookout and Fort Delaware.
- Excerpts from the Diary of George W. Hall - A Georgia Private's life at Fort Delaware.
- Col Hoffmann's order on POW Rations - A list of what rations were supposed to be for Rebels held by the Union.
The account of Lt John A. Fisher of the problems of making soldiers out of farmboys, and how inexperience and disorganization hampered the 23rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry and brought disease to the troops before they ever saw the enemy.
If you haven't read the Civil War Diary of Thomas Monroe Coombs of the 5th Kentucky Cavalry or my notes on John Thomas of the 44th Mississippi Infantry, or the story of Oxley Johnson of the 23rd Missouri, feel free to take a look at those pages.
