Combs, Coombs &c - An active surname group. Many well-researched papers and abstracts.
GenForum - Postings by surname and location.
RootsWeb The leading non-commercial genealogy site, loaded with databases, pedigrees, and hundreds of mail lists. Excellent search engines.
Cyndi's List - The first place to look for anything having to do with genealogy. Well organized and frequently updated.
U S GenWeb Project - Clearing house for volunteers around the country. Emphasis on original records.
Libraries
Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Salt Lake City. Filmed items are available on loan to local Family History Centers for a modest charge.
The Library of Congress, Washington, DC. A national treasure, filled with almost limitless materials of every sort for the researcher.
Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne. Especially strong in periodicals. They publish the valuable PERSI (Periodical Source Index).
Kenton County Public Library, Covington. Lots of Kentucky materials, especially for Boone, Kenton, and Campbell Counties.
Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, Frankfort. Not only state and county records of all sorts, but also historic newspapers.
Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort. Extensive locality and family files, as well as histories, manuscripts, maps, etc.
Margaret I. King Library of the University of Kentucky, Lexington. Public documents, hard-to-find histories, and the best newspaper collection in the state. Also the separate Special Collections Department features manuscripts, rare books, etc.
Missouri State Historical Society, University of Missouri, Columbia. Newspapers and newspaper indexes.
Clayton Library, Houston. An entire building devoted to genealogy. Watch out for hurricanes and high water.
Memphis Library History Department. Strong regional collections.
History
GNIS - The Geographic Names Information System. The first place to look for obscure places in the United States. Especially helpful for those with a GPS receiver and/or a good mapping program.
Kentucky Biographies - Excerpts from county and regional histories.
Union, Kentucky - Interesting items from the history of the town in Boone County, hosted by Jim Duvall, who also has made available some hard to find Baptist Documents from the early days of the church.
Bourbon County Databases - A growing collection of material on early Bourbon County and the Bluegrass, hosted by Bob Francis.
Northern Kentucky Views - A collection of antique postcards, put together by Bernie Spencer.

The next time you receive exciting news that a software mogul is giving away large chunks of money, or that a soap company is controlled by Satanists, or that the dreaded New World Order is going to tax your e-mail, don't pass it on to a hundred of your closest friends or post it on your mailing lists. Check it out first at one of these sites. You might save yourself a little embarrassment.
