One thing that all the the men had enough of was the French mud. It was found out that motor trucks even with 4 wheel drive sunk up to their axles and became stuck. And many times it was only the horses and mules that could get the ammunition and artillery to the front lines. Veterinary Hospital No 9 France WW1.

Treatment of Mange

Mange was a contagious skin disease affecting horses and mules. At the outset the disease usually manifested itself in limited spots, affecting the skin and hair. If not treated promptly, the disease would spread over the body of the animal, hair would drop out, skin would crack and bleed and if not treated in time the animal would have to be destroyed. To combat this disease a large dipping vat deep enough to completely immerse the horses and mules was filled with a lime and sulphur mixture in water. This solution was then brought to a boil, a big steam boiler being utilized for the purpose. We dipped the horses and mules when the solution was warm, lining up the animals to be treated and driving them thru the vat. If the disease was caught early the treatment was very effective and the animals recovered.
