76TH FIELD ARTILLERY STABLES LOWER PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY

NOTE: I will be using building numbers from the two 1940's maps that I have located and building sheets.

Building No. 152 - It is now the museum. I am still not clear what this building was originally used for but I believe it used for the stable detachment and stable guard. I wonder if this building is building no. 118 according to building sheet no. 118?

Building No. 153 - Latrine (I believe this building is the bathroom for the museum today).

Building No. 154 - 76th Field Artillery artillery stable.

Building No. 155 - 76th Field Artillery artillery stable.

Building No. 156 - 76th Field Artillery artillery stable.

Building No. 157 - 76th Field Artillery artillery stable.

Note: It appears that the stables both cavalry and artillery were constructed of a double stable building in the center and a half stable building on both sides. Sometimes it appears that more than one center double stable could be in the center. They appeared to be made so you could put as many center stables as needed. Very convenient design if more stable room is needed.

Building No. 158 - Gun shed originally 15 bays or one battery (this building is still standing).

Building No. 159 - Gun shed originally 15 bays or one battery. This gun shed had an addition built in the back that appears was used as a garage.

Building No. 160 - Gun shed originally 15 bays or one battery.

Building No. 161 - This building was originally the blacksmith shop and later a garage. Important note: this building is labeled on one building sheet as 161 and another sheet as 163 (older sheet). On the two maps I have Building No. 161 is the right location.

Building No. 162 - This building was behind Building 160 and it had 15 bays and I believe it was where the horse-drawn wagons were kept originally. (This could be building no. 258 on a building sheet we have located).

NOTE: One of the challenges that I had working at the POM Archive were researching the building sheets. They were in chronological order, but with the building number changes over the years a building sheet could be located in anyone of the past building numbers. Records were difficult keep in there proper order with the many individuals doing research over the years and I found the building sheets out of order in many cases. This made it very difficult to located the needed paperwork. - Greg Krenzelok

BUILDING NO. 152 STABLE DETACHMENT (CURRENT MUSEUM)

This is the earliest type of building form found at the POM archives and does not have any official form number printed on the sheet as later forms have. I believe that the above building no. 118 which according to this building sheet was built in August 14, 1908. I believe this building was moved from a different location to the current location of the Presidio museum today. I have located paperwork showing the building numbers over the years have been: 118, 152, and current number of 113. According to this building sheet it was original used as a "magazine". Hand written notes also state the following: (8/10/29) artillery stable detachment, quarters for stable detachment and that the designation changed was made on 8/8/27. DLIFLC & POM

76TH FIELD ARTILLERY STABLE NO. 157 IS STILL STANDING 2014

NOTE: Marked to be demolished in the future as of 2014. Originally left standing with the understanding the City of Monterey would restore the historical buildings when the partnership was originally created with the Presidio of Monterey. These buildings are in great disrepair but they still are a very important part of the history of the Presidio of Monterey. I hope something will be done to preserve their history. The Park Service is now allowing buildings like this to remain standing and letting nature take it's course. At a minimum I hope a fence will be erected around the stables and let the public enjoy picturing in their minds what it was like when the horse soldiers were here.

NOTE: I believe this is the 76th Field Artillery's wagon shed no. 162 even know the above building sheet number is 258. I have not found the proper documentation defending my opinion. The building sheet for 11th Cavalry stable no. 166 also shows a building no. of 257 and 11th Cavalry stable no. 167 also shows a building no. of 256, which is also a mystery, both built in the early 1930s and right next to the wagon shed. It is interesting that wagon shed no. 258 built in the early 1930s also has continuing numbering with the cavalry stables. All the other artillery buildings were built in 1922. Also I believe looking at the building sheet image, a corner of the addition to gun shed no. 159 and the fence to the riding pen can be seen in the background. Until proved incorrect this is my theory.

NOTE: Shoeing the 11th Cavalry and 76th Field Artillery horses was a big job and it was done continually. Each day about 5 horses or more were given new shoes, working through all the horses of each troop and battery and then starting it all over. The only exception was when a horse needed shoeing.
