U. S. BASE VETERINARY HOSPITAL NO. 1, NEVERS, FRANCE WW1

Nevers was a historic town of thirty thousand on the banks of the River Loire during the war. The headquarters of the Intermediate Section Service of Supply was at Nevers, France during WW1. At Nevers in the intermediate section the area covered 22 different camps, whose military population was about 50,000. Nearly every arm or department of service was represented. There were aviation camps, railroad engineers and railroad operators, labor battalions, motor repair units, a remount station, hospital units, and many others. There were several thousand German prisoners and nearly a thousand homeless Russians. At the time of the Armistice there were 30,000 patients in the great hospitals at Mesves and Mars-sur-Allier.

Each veterinary hospital required much special construction, such as concrete dipping tanks for the treatment of mange, operating rooms, exercising paddocks, hay sheds, living quarters for attendants and veterinary surgeons, and administration buildings.

My Grandfather William Porter Carvin (went by the name Porter Carvin). This picture was probably taken after the war upon his return to the states. Looking closely at his collar button shows a medical corps inscription, difficult to see if it contains the V for veterinary, I've looked very closely but it does not appear to be there. The large A for the First army. Chevron under the A indicates he was honorably discharged with two lower chevrons indicate he was oversees one year. I believe the first ribbon on his chest is the victory ribbon. The second ribbon and medal are not yet identified, but may have something to do with the army of occupation. Note: If anyone can help with identifying anything about these picture please contact the website. Gerald is also looking for other people who had relatives at Base Veterinary Hospital No 1 to share information. It was also very common to just be wearing the Medical Corps collar insignia without the V, they were alittle harder to come by.

I just received some information on Base Veterinary Hospital No 1, which I am filtering through but thought you might be interested in some. From the records First Veterinary Detachment was organized on Jan. 9, 1918 from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bn. 151st Depot Brigade at camp Devens, Mass.. "Drill, fatigue and lectures comprised the chief activities of the detachment. "Detachment under quarantine for Measles and Meningitis from the date organized till the middle of March". Left Camp Devens April 14, 1918, arrived at Hoboken, N.J. April 15, 1918; Left Hoboken April 16, 1918 on the S.S. Czaritza" arriving at Brest France on April 28. This included Base Veterinary Hospital No 1 and probably Veterinary Hospital No 1, and the 116th Mobile Vet, (which eventually in Oct. would be attached to Base Veterinary Hospital No 1) as well. The Czaritza was built by Barclay Curle and Co., Glasgow as a liner for the Russian East Asiatic SS co in 1915. In 1917 with the Russian Revolution, the ship was transferred to the British Shipping Controller who assigned it to the Cunard S.S. co. It is interesting to note that these S.O.S. men were being shipped in a British vessel at this time as most space on British ships were being reserved for infantry and machine gun personnel because of the recent German offensive and allied agreement.

Base Veterinary Hospital No 1 was being located in a terrible place near Nevers, France with several of its commanders complaining about the pour drainage and deep mud. Eventually Lieut Colonel N.H. Davis inspected the camp and on Nov. 15, 1918 recommended the abandonment of the hospital. "The simplest way to bring about this result would appear to be to direct the commanding officer of Remount Depot No.23 at Sougy to direct the movement and assist in it with all his available personnel...that this movement be commence without delay. However the recommendation was not agreed to and Base Veterinary Hospital No 1 remained at Nevers for an additional six months.

Gerald's Note: Picture 3 shows the veterinary base hospital at Nevers. I believe the buildings to the far right are the barracks while the horse stables are to the left. If you look close at the center left of picture 2 you will see a two-wheel tip cart. In front if you look very close you will see several downed horses, which appear to be tied through the front of the cart with a cable, the horse being eventually pulled on to the cart.

Gerald's Note: Picture 7 shows the horse area. Picture is taken from a different angle from the others and is done on different paper. On the back my grandfather wrote "camp where we were stationed. Nevers Nevairs APO 708". This picture may have preceded the others and sent to my grandfathers parents at an earlier time. New construction of buildings can be seen in background as well as what appears to be a French village. Greg's Note: I am guessing the "Nevairs" is "NIEVRE" this is the region of France that Nevers and my grandfather's VC No 18 at Sougy where located

Hi Greg

I am very proud, thank you for the great job you are doing. Just one problem which may be mine. The caption were I mention the new construction in background and that the photo was sent to my grandfathers parents probably at an earlier date, that picture is missing from the portfolio. Maybe I didn't send it if so I am sorry.

I have also found additional information on the ship my grandfather sailed home from France. It was the USS President Grant ID#3014, built in Belfast in 1907 and belong to the Hamburg-Amerika Line, and took refuge in New York in Aug. 1914, seized by the U.S in 1917. Made eight trips to the war zone and eight back after the war. Also played an important part in Sept. 1918 while transporting the 809th Pioneer Infantry to France. "During the 14 day voyage on the troop ship President Grant, half of the 5000 men fell ill with "Spanish flue". So many died many had to be buried at sea. This was part of the Pandemic of 1918, which is believed to have begun at Camp Funston, Kan. on March 8, 1918 and eventually transported by troop ships to Europe eventually killing over 20 million people. This ship also went on to transport troops during WW II under the name Republic AP-33, which was later refitted as a hospital ship.

I also learned, and maybe you knew this, that over 8 million horses died in WW 1, but that over 2 1/2 million horses were treated in Hospitals, with 2 million being returned to duty. I think that shows what a good job they must have done under difficult circumstances.

HISTORY OF U.S.BASE VETERINARY HOSPITAL NO 1

1. Veterinary Detachment #1 was organized at Camp Devens, Mass, on the 9th day of January 1918

2. There were 233 Privates and Privates 1/cl., with no Non-Commissioned Officers. On March 1st 1918 one Sergeant 1st Class, five Sergeants and eight Corporals were made. April 1, 1918 the Organization contained 200 Privates and Privates 1st Class, one Sgt. 1st Class and 3 Sergeants and 4 Corporals. May 1st showed 164 Privates and privates 1st class with the same number of non-coms. June 1st showed 158 Privates and privates 1st class , one Sgt. 1st class, 3 Sergeants, 7 corporals, 2 cooks and 15 mechanics. July 1st 1918 there was no changes. On Aug 1st 1918 there were 143 privates and privates 1st class, one Sgt. 1st class, 3 Sergeants., 7 corporals, 3 cooks and 17 mechanics. September 1st there were no changes. October 1st was the same.

October 22, 1918 Mobile Veterinary Section 116 was attached with 5 Nom-Coms and 16 men. There were no changes November 1st. On December 1st 1918 the organization contained 165 men, including 15 Nom-coms, 20 mechanics and cooks Privates 1st class and Privates. Cook Clews was appointed Sergeant January 1st 1919. On February 1st 1919 there were 109 Privates and Privates 1st Class, 16 Nom-Coms and 16 Mechanics and Cooks. Sufficient for the Present needs of the Service.

3 There were 32 Officers, attached, assigned and relieved as follows

4. First Veterinary Detachment organized January 9, 1918 for 1st., 2nd, and 3rd Battalions. 151st Depot Brigade with 232 men, Camp Devens, Mass. Drill, fatigue and lectures comprised the chief activities of the Detachment. Detachment under quarantine for Measles and Meningitis from the date organized until the middle of March.

We left Camp Devens April 14, 1918, arrived at Hoboken, N.J. April 15; 1918; left Hoboken, N.J. April 16, 1918 on S.S. CZARITZA for France.

5. Arrived in Brest April 28, 1918, Stationed at Napoleon Barracks for 2 days. We Left Brest April 30, 1918 for Nevers, Nievre, France; Arrived May 3rd, 1918 and pitched Camp at the present site of Base Veterinary Hospital No 1. The country is level, brooks on North and South, situated in the Suburbs of Nevers in a very muddy field. Animals taken over from Wagon Co. 100 and 101. Personnel employed in treatment and care of animals; and construction of roads, picket lines etc.

6.The Detachment quartered in pyramidal tents, light furnished by candles and fire brigade protection. In October they were quartered in Adrian Barracks, heated by stoves and lighted by electric lights. Latrine situated sufficient distance from the Barracks. Officers ate in tents, and men ate in Lean-to made with Tarpaulin. Kitchen located in cement building about 30 x 30, overhead ventilation, lighted by lamps (oil) food prepared in Field ranges by trained cook. Food fair and cooking fair but food supply low.

8. Water furnished from City supply, drawn in horse drawn vehicles, and distributed to lister bags without examination. Purified by Hydrochloizanation. Daily consumption of about 500 gallons. Ice was not used.

9. The men bathed in brooks on either side of Camp. No sewer connections for waste water until about January 1919, when the bathhouse was built supplying both hot and cold water. It is well heated and has good drainage.

10 Sewage and waste buried in pits. Latrine facilities temporary and crude, suitably arranged and adequate, latrines washed with by chloride of mercury daily, separated latrines for venereals.

11 A Canteen of a Business of about 400 francs was started in August, which saved the men 1 1/2 miles walk. They could get such thing as toilet articles, tobacco, candy and the like from the canteen.

12. Amusement was furnished by the Y.M.C.A. in the form of Motion Pictures and lectures. A number of Library books and athletics supplies were also supplied by the Y.M.C.A. and occasionally Divine services were held.

13. Venereal diseases low rate. Inspection semi-monthly. There is a Prophylactic station in camp and lectures on venereal diseases very frequently.

14. Daily medical attention. No limited service men. No physichological examination.

15. Men well clothed by post Quartermaster at Nevers, Sufficiently clothed and quartered in warm barracks. Laundry is done by French Civilians. Equipment is good both in quality and quantity although sometimes delayed.

16 conscientious objectors, no alien enemies, no deserters, a few A.W.O.L., but with no marked effect on service.

Summary Court and no efficiency board

THE HOSPITAL

1. Headquarters Inter.Sec.SOS, game ample time and attention to the needs of the hospital cooperating in every possible way. The Medical Corps and Remount Service cooperated in every respect. General hospital with 801st Pioneer Infantry attached to hospital and 116th Mobile Veterinary Section #116. All types of animals received from every source.

2. (12) stables 25' x 125', 1 dressing room 50'x36', 1 operating room 871/2x87 1/2, 648 Stanchion stalls 9'6" long and 6' wide and 8' 6" high.

2a. Railroad only a minutes walk from camp. Animals quartered in double open style sheds holding (27) animals to the side. Picket lines have not been used since the completion of the stables adequate to hold all animals received from time to time. Floor of sand and cinders with drainage ditch behind open at rear of animals, and lighted by electricity furnished from own plant. Manure removed daily and flooring frequently changed. One stable has wood floor, which is used for foot cases. Fire buckets at each stable. Shoeing shop of corrugated iron with three forges, adequate equipment and good sanitation. No new construction.

3. Forage obtained from forage depot only about 1/2 kilometer away. No bedding used. Feeding schedule variable according to amount, of feed and condition and kind of animals. Oats and hay fed exclusively. Feed stored in two buildings enclosed with corrugated iron relatively few cases of colic due to feed. Salt fed regularly. Manure sold to French civilians.

4. Water pumped to storage tank from brook, not purified. Distributed to (8) water troughs from which the animals are watered three times daily. All animals were washed as of ten as possible.

5. Animals groomed twice daily with kits that have been disinfected. Every animal clipped, and exercised daily according to conditions. Animals used on wagons as far as possible, the remaining either ridden or led for exercise, this applies to both animals of organization and patients. Harness fitted to each animal and also cleaned and oiled every week dept in repair by saddler. Animals have not suffered from lack of clothing as hospital has had ample supply of blankets at all times. No camouflage of animals.

6. Shoeing shop constructed of corrugated iron, three sides enclosed, also three forges and equipment for three blacksmiths. Shoeing material sufficient in amount. No special shoes for pathological conditions as the horseshoers are not sufficiently competent. Shoes of medium weight, light shoes unfit because of condition of roads. Horseshoers fairly well trained and doing a fair amount of work each day but just simple shoeing. Shoeing inspected by Officers.

7. There have been but very few advantages in controlling communicable diseases within the hospital but many disadvantages due to the fact that the hospital has been overcrowded. It has been difficult to segregate the animals due to the lack of space and the various kinds of communicable diseases occurring at the same time. For instance nearly all the animals in the hospital are affected with mange and if the hospital was at its full capacity as it had been and an epidemic of strangles should break out, in order to segregate the latter animals, ones that are wholly cured of mange, becomes re-affected or vice versa. At present there is ample room to segregate all animals with communicable diseases and there is sufficient commissioned and enlisted personnel to give them sufficient attention and care so that re-infection will not occur. Animals admitted to hospital are segregated until they can be examined and classified, this is done by an Officer who has complete charge of all animals admitted. Sick animals are fed and watered according to their needs, are groomed twice daily and exercised if advisable. Convalescent animals groomed and exercised according to degree of their recovery. Sick and injured animals are treated as often as necessary under the supervision of a Veterinarian.

Records very inadequate and incomplete to date.

Hospital divided into five sections each under a Officer. One Officer has charge of three stables making four Officers in all in charge of 12 stables, and one Officer in charge of surgery and dressing room and cases as well as gas chamber and blacksmith shop.

8. Impossible to give number of deaths and records month by month from general communicable diseases. Practically all animals are suffering from mange and a great many cases of Influenza and strangles. No records kept. Animals isolated as far as possible and all possible precautions taken. At the beginning when their was no shelter and the picket lines were 6" to 10" thick it was a difficult task to properly care for them and consequently many of them died. At present with good sheds and ample room an animal with a communicable disease is segregated as well as the contact and all precautions taken.

Animals examined daily and mange cases according to degree of severity animals Malleined, intra dermal, every twenty days, reactors destroyed, doubtful and contacts isolated, stables disinfected during symptoms of Lymphangitis isolated or either I.C'd or sold to butcher. Only three cases of Tetanus have developed here of which two were cured and one died.

Influenza was at the beginning very prevalent but due to careful treatment and judicious handling has practically been eliminated. A very low percentage of pneumonia developed.

9. Answers a question of which the questions are not known

Glanders outbreak in camp was discovered in November. The greatest number of reactors found during December, which were 16 in number. From November 1918 to April 11,1919, (34) cases of glanders were discovered. The source of affected animals cannot be determined. Animals entering hospital were placed in quarantine and Malleined intra-Dermal palpebral test being used, several confirmed cases showed only slight reaction to case. Contacts to reactors were isolated to a period of twenty days and stables were thoroughly disinfected. All removable refuse was burned. All stables were regularly disinfected three times a week. Reactors were dilled, postmortem was held, and disposed of by the French authorities. Three different cases of doubtful reactors were held for a period of ten days, and again tested showing a positive reaction. On post-mortem extensive lesions of glanders were found in lungs. During the month of December marked lesions of glanders were found in (60%) of the animals. In other cases very slight lesions were found. All animals were found every twenty days. Supply of Mallein was always adequate.

10. Communicable diseases-skin. The hand treatment and gas chamber was used most of the time as the dipping vat was not installed and put in operation until Jan. 1919. Best results being achieved with the dipping vat. All cases were dipped twice a week. Grooming and exercising was a great factor in curing mage. All animals were thoroughly scrubbed and leaving the dip and exercised until dry.

11. No laboratory facilities were available at hospital.

12. Colics were due mostly to poor oats and hay, and general poor condition of incoming animals. Thrush and scratches were prevalent- due to muddy condition of surroundings. To prevent the same animals were dept in a dry a place as possible. Rock and sand being hauled to improve conditions.

13. Permanently disabled or injured animals, otherwise healthy were sold to the French butchers, all other carcasses were disposed of to rendering plant.

14. No data on gas cases. Cannot compare with cases in human.

15. No motor ambulance at hospital. Railroad yards are within five hundred yards of hospital. Most cases were received and sent by railroad transportation

16. No data of surgical cases. Surgical cases were generally successful, difficulty being found on foot cases only, and X-Ray was not used.

17. No data on description of medical cases. Epidemic during fall of 1918 of Influenza but in mild form.

18. Supplies were obtainable from supply depot at Gievres. Good quality and sufficient amount of equipment and supplies. Few delays in transportation of supplies. The Records in the early days of the original hospital not available.

BASE VETERINARY HOSPITAL NO 1 ROSTER

When compiling the information for this Listing I started by taking the four Rosters that I was able to obtain from the National Archives for May, June, July and Dec. In order to come up with a complete list of all enlisted and non-commissioned officers for the Hospital while deployed to Nevers, France. I then went through other primary source materials to correct spelling or add middle names or initials. I searched Ancestry. com for draft registrations keeping in mind that Base Veterinary Hospital No 1 was formed at Camp Devens, Mass in Jan. 1918, therefore I concentrated my efforts on names that came from New England and Up State New York, and that were taken in the first draft on June 5, 1917, as the unit was shipped out before the second draft registration. The ages given for each man would be the age he would have been on June 5, 1917. Next I searched the 1930 census records attempting to verify if the individual claimed to have served in W.W.I as indicated on that census, followed by searching other census records to find family connections or history. Finally I tried to contact families through Ancestry to verify positively if possible their connection to the hospital. After finding the background information I looked through primary sources again for references to individuals and included them in this record

For most of the soldiers I am very confident of the connection and the research. It must always be kept in mind that primary source records may be missing, or inaccurate, an example is with my own relation, Porter Carvin, who did not claim he was a veteran of WW I on the 1930 census, when in fact he was a member of the Vet Hosp., or other members making false claims on their draft registration to get into or stay out of the service.

Ferrara,, Italy, registered in New Haven, Conn., Listed as an Alien. A gas maker for NH Gas and Light Co., for which he claims an exemption because of public servant, he is single of medium height and stout build with brown eyes and dark hair1930 census: age 34 living in Boston, Mass., with his wife Mary age 27 being married abt. 1923, having two children. He is a machinist in a machine shop, being born in Rennazzo, Italy and was a WW I veteran.

Naturalization was issued on March 2, 1931, his age being 34 in Boston, Mass.

Transferred to Base Hosp #1 from 151st Depot Brig., on April 14, 1918 just days before shipping out.

Described as an Alien on a naturalization list of Nov. 2, 1918

Captain B.R. Thayer reports on Nov. 20,1918 that "Pvt. Alberghini has been absent without leave since Nov. 17th, and is believed to be in company of Private William Boshane this organization.... Descriptions follow:" Pvt. Alberghini. was drafted from New Haven, Conn., is single five feet nine and one half inches tall, age 23 years, complexion medium, eyes brown, hair dark: was born in Italy at Rannazzo, and is a laborer, No marks.

Amodio, (Di) Santo
May, June, July, Dec. Draft: age 25, 11/8/1891; reg. Hartford, Conn., as a laborer, was in the Italian army as a private for two years; tall, slender build, gray eyes and black hair.

Naturalization: Arrived in New York April 16, 1914 at age 22 on the S.S. Berlin, from Polermo, Italy, a native of Sicily, born in Palaszolo. He came with his brother Salvatore age 39, Amoldio is listed as a laborer.

WW II registration 1942: age 50 living in Hartford, Conn. Born in Sicily, worked at the Triton Restaurant on Farmington, Ave. Died Jan. 30, 1973 in Hartford, Conn., wife listed as Carmella

Transferred to Base Hospital No 1 from 151st Depot Brig., on April 14, 1918 just days before shipping out. Helped transfer animals between Aug. 28, to Sept. 1, 1918: "Wish orders for the following men to take 10 stallions to Sancerre (Cher) Sgt. C. Stanley; Pvt. Amodio (and others) leaving here Sug. 29,1918 and returning by Sept. 1. I intend to send a wagon with them for provisions and forage and to carry them back." Lt. McComb

Described as an Alien on a naturalization list of Nov. 2, 1918 During the war he, along with Albert Sirica, were able to get a two week pass to visit Italy in March 1919. (See Albert Sirica for additional information on this leave)

Anderson, Martin Edwin Dec roster

In a letter of August 5, 1918, commanding officer R.P. McComb writes "I would like to have Sgt. Martin E. Anderson Q.M., casual at Gievres, transferred into the Veterinary Corps and sent here. He is an excellent man, can handle men wonderfully well, and has spent three years in a veterinary college. I am not sure that he wants to transfer to the Veterinary Corps since he has to be transferred as a Private. Would appreciate it very much if you could arrange this transfer."

In response from Capt. S.H. Bell QMRC, "...this matter must be handled through channels and it will be necessary for him to make application himself and when the matter comes up for action by the Veterinary Corps, recommendation will be made that he be accepted."

He was assigned to the Vet. Hospital on Nov. 14, 1918 from the Veterinary Replacement Unit No 1, but is reported to have wanted to transfer in as early as Aug. 1918.

On March 15,1919 his commanding officer indicates in a letter that he is entitled to one war chevron as he left the U.S. for overseas duty on Oct. 14, 1918.

Axelrod, Samuel F.
Pvt. 1st Class; May, June, July, Dec.; Draft: age 21, 7/22/1895, from Waterbury, Conn.; sales manager, single, medium height, slender build, brown hair, dark eyes.

1920 Census: father- Isadore J, mother- Clera., both coming from Russia. Samuel is living at home with his parents being the oldest of eight children. He was born in the U.S.

1930 Census: He is living in Los Angeles, Calif., worked as a laborer age 34 in a Dying co., able to read and write, married to Esther R. 31, and their two month old son Jack. He is listed as a W.W. I Veteran.

Died Oct. 1968 in Los Angeles

During the war he is listed on "special duty" form 6/18-6/25/1918, Promoted pvt. 1st class June 17, 1918.

Able to get a rare pass, along with Lewis Lasher, Alton Empie, Patrick Curtis and William Goldstein to Paris on 3/17/1919 for 72 hours " excluding time of travel."

Described as an Alien on a naturalization list of Nov. 2, 1918

Babcock, Willis Clarence Jr. Pvt. 1st:
May, June, July, Dec.: Draft; age 23, 4/25/1893 (4) , reg. Lyme, Conn., with wife and child, three years with the National Guard, short and slender, blue eyes, and brown hair.

1910 Census: He's 17 years old working as a clerk in a grocery store in Lyme, Conn., his father is listed as a farmer.

1920 census: He is living with his wife Myrtle, three year old son Fred and daughter Ella in his sisters home in New London, Conn.. Ella was born in July 1918 while Willis was deployed to France. She was born in Montville, New London, Conn.. Willis is working as a laborer in a cotton mill.

1930 Census: He is 35 and his wife "Mabel is age 30" and have eight children 2 born prior to 1919. He is a teamster for a furniture store and is listed as a veteran of WW I.

WW II registration 1942: born Lyme, Conn. is 48 years old, working for Robert Geer and Co., of Montville, Conn.

Promoted pvt. 1st class. June 17, 1918.

May, June, July, Dec. Draft: age 24 born 1/31/1893 in New York, registered in Mooers, Clinton Co., N.Y. is a Government. Inspector, with a wife being of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair.

1910 census: Mooers, Clinton Co., N.Y. living with his father William age 59 a farmer and mother Lucy M. age 56.

He was in the camp hospital from June 25- June 30, 1918, In July he is indicated as being "transferred," but not dropped from the roster, possible he was transferred to a hospital. In a letter dated July 26,1918 his commanding officer R.P. McComb, requests his transfer with others, describing them as "absolutely useless around horses and are therefore inefficient in this line of duty. This authority is asked only after repeated efforts to overcome their timidity around horses, and after thoroughly satisfying myself that it is impossible to remedy this fault. "

On July 26, 1918 his commanding officer describes him in a letter as "being useless around horses."

On Aug. 28, 1918 he is found transporting animals returning on Sept. 1, "Wish orders for the following men to take 10 Stallions to Sancerre (Cher) Sgt. Stanley, Pvt. Barber (and others), leaving here Aug. 28, 1918, returning by Sept. 1, 1918. I intend to send a wagon with them for provisions and forage and to carry them back." Lt. McComb

Letter of Sept. 1,1918: "Wish orders executed for the following men: - Sgt. Stanley, Pvts. Barber, Boutiller, Rochon and Sirica, to deliver horses overland to the 4th Division at Laguerche, department of Mievre. It is impracticable for them to carry rations. By Dec. 1918 he is in the hospital for the entire month, and on Jan. 31, 1919 he is transferred to the Mare Hospital Center and dropped from the rolls.

"When trying to place his team at the rock pile of the Section Engineer Pvt. Holmes driving a four line team of horses, was unable to get as close to the pile as the Corporal thought necessary. The Corporal considered that he could drive the team better than the driver, and with the driver's consent, took the team in hand, the driver leaving the seat. The corporal drove the team around the pile and near some enlisted men ...who threw rocks at the horses, frightening them until the four broke into a gallop, and the corporal was unable to control them" eventually damaging a two wheel cart of a French lady before they were able to be controlled. "No action or punishment will be taken against our driver, until we are informed as to the action desired, or the amount of injury to the lady.".

McComb responds " The ... men arrived in France April 28, 1918 and are entitled to the regular seven day leave." On Jan. 31 "These leaves are granted for fourteen days, travel included.... " They may have left for Britain on 2/4/1919 for this leave.

He was in the Hospital from June 23 -June 30 and possibly longer 1918.

1900 census: father- Alfred, age 40, a RR Laborer from New York/Scotland, mother- Emma age 35 from Schuyler, NY. 1910 census; The State Agricultural & Industrial Reform School, Rush, NY, where unfortunate boys under 16 were sent by the state (unknown what got him in trouble and sent him there). He learns to care for animals, as the superintendent - formerly an instructor in the trade school, took advantage of the need to develop practical skills in which the boys could take pride. Farm chores centering around an adjoining barn. 1920 After the War he did not return to his wife and child for unknown reasons. He remarried and had two daughters. He died in 1923 from possible appendicitis, 1 week before his second daughter was born. On his death bed he confessed to already being married and having a son. The 1st wife received the pension.

He is buried in East Schuyler Miller Cemetery, Schuyler, Herkimer County, NY, Inscription: Pvt Base Hosp

There is another Charles Nadler born about 1896 in the 1930 Census who was living with his step-father Michael Steffel in Buffalo, Erie co., N.Y. who was a laborer for a moving company and was a veteran of WW I, but doesn't fit the pattern for Camp Deven draftees, being from Buffalo.

Passport Application: applied for Jan. 3, 1924, and issued Jan 7th, to go to Ireland for a visitation leaving on or about Jan 16, 1924. In the application he is living in Hillsborough, N.H. being born in Derrylaben, Rosscomon County Ireland were his father Martin Neanon still resided. He emigrated from Liverpool, England on June 5, 1914 and had been living for nine years in Manchester, N.H. becoming a citizen on June 16, 1919 in Boston, Mass. coinciding with his return from WW I. He claims his occupation to be a "motorman", he is 5 feet 7 inches tall, brown eyes, medium nose, small mouth, round chin, black hair, ruddy complexion, and a long face.. No indication of being married on the application, and is witnessed by a Margaret Manning who had personally known him for 25 years.

WW II Registration 1942, Born Roscommon, Ireland, and was residing in New York City working for C.T. & S Co.. There is no indication of marriage.

Veteran Grave Sites: He is listed as a Pvt. Army in WW I served from Nov. 28, 1917 who died on June 24, 1967 and is buried in the Long Island National Cemetery. He received his Social Security in New York prior to 1951.

Miss Dwelley took the train to Ayer. The train was delayed several hours because of a snow storm. Albert was able to get the Chaplin to wait with him and they were married just before midnight.

Naturalization record: date of admission is June 16,1919 soon after returning to the States. It shows he was born in Salerno, Italy and had an occupation of being a baker .and resided in Stanford, Conn.

Transferred to the Base Veterinary Hospital No 1 from 151st Depot Brig. On April 14, 1918 just days before shipping out.

He was involved in the transfer of animals on Aug 28, 1918, returning on Sept. 1," Wish orders for the following men to take 10 stallions to Sancerre (cher) Sgt. C Stanley; Pvt. Sirica (and others) leaving her Aug. 29, 1918 and returning by Sept. 1, 1918. I intend to send a wagon with them for provisions and forage and to carry them back." Lt. McComb.

Capt. McComb on Jan. 28,1919 "requested that Pvt. Sirica and Pvt. Santo Amodio be granted leaves to Italy in accordance with.... dated Jan. 27, 1919" There was some question as to whether they were entitled to leaves to which McComb responds on Jan. 31st " the above men arrived in France April 26, 1918 and are entitled to the regular seven day leave."

March 1, 1919 from Adjutant General " This application has been placed in its order of merit and date and you will be notified and furnished leave papers for the earliest accommodation available.. The allotment to the Intermediate Section for leaves to Italy is so limited as to prohibit granting such leaves at the present time that are not very exceptional."

March 18, 1919 "Leave is granted Pvts. Sirica and Amodio, Vet. Dept. To visit Italy for a period of fourteen days travel included; applicant must travel to and from Italy in the manner shown on attached memorandum of these headquarters dated Feb. 24th, 1919. Effective March 22 for Sirica and march 23 for Amodio".

1930 census: Cobleskill, Schoharie co., N.Y. he's 34 living with his wife Elizabeth age 35 with no children being married about 1919. He is a dairy farmer and a veteran of WW I.

WW II Registration 1942: age 46 living in Hudson, N.J., being born in Rochester. He works for a steam-fitting company out of New Brunswick, NJ. His wife is still Elizabeth. He claims he was born on Oct. 13, 1896

He died in Jersey City, Hudson, NJ in January 1971 it claims his birthday is Oct. 13, 1895. Registered for Social Security before 1951 in New Jersey.
