VETERINARY BUILDINGS OF THE PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY 1905 to 1940's

VETERINARY DETACHMENT BUILDING NO. 95
The oldest veterinary building that I have been able to find at the DLIFLC & POM Archives in my research is building no. 95 (510 written in red ink), Veterinary Detachment barrack.. We have an original building sheet for building no. 95 with image. It is a typed sheet with all information originally typed in.

Date completed: March 1, 1905
Building designation: Q. M. Saddler's Shop crossed off and Veterinary Detachment barracks hand written it.
It states that this building was converted from saddle house to quarter's veterinary detachment. Ceiled inside, new windows added Feb. 15, 1913
Cost: 200.00
Repairs: dated from 1903 to 1937

SECOND BUILDING SHEET FOR BUILDING NO. 95 (Veterinary Detachment Barrack)
We have a second building sheet for Building No. 95 found in the DLIFLC & POM Archives with image (Veterinary Detachment Barrack). It is a typed sheet with all information originally typed in. This building sheet shows later improvements to the building.

TEMPORARY VETERINARY HOSPITAL BUILDING NO. 135
The second oldest veterinary building that I have been able to find at the POM Archives is Building No. 135, Temporary Veterinary Hospital. We have an original building sheet for Building No. 135 with image.

Date completed: April 1914.
Building designation: Temporary Veterinary Hospital is crossed off and written in is cavalry stables.
Capacity: 7 animals.
Floors: gravel.
Building dimensions: 20 ft. x 80 ft.
The building had electric lighting, water connection and sewer. Total cost: 591.54

It appears that this building was used as the veterinary hospital up to August 8, 1927 when the designation changed from Vet. Hospital to cavalry stables. Record states that the building was demolished and salvaged in April 1931.

VETERINARY OFFICE BUILDING NO. 171 (277)
The third oldest veterinary building that I have been able to find at the DLIFLC & POM Archives is Building No. 171 (277), Veterinary Office. Building No. 277 is re-numbered on the 1941 map.

Date completed: 1921.
Building designation: Veterinary Office.
Building dimensions: 22 ft. x 40 ft.
Foundation and floors: wood.
The building had electric lighting and water connections. No sewer or gas connections.
Total cost: 575.00

Note: A shower head was added in December 18, 1941. This confirms that this building was still standing and being used at this date.

Note: We have two original building sheets of the Station Veterinary Hospital Office with image built in 1921 (layout of this building is on the back of the sheet). Each sheet has a different image of this building which shows the changes in the building over the years. There was a sleeping quarters in this building.

DISPENSARY STOCK SHED AND VETERINARY STATION HOSPITAL BUILDING NO. 170 (276)
The fourth oldest veterinary building that I have been able to find at the POM Archives is Building No. 170 (276), Dispensary and Veterinary Hospital.

Date completed: Dispensary 1923 and Stock Shed added to dispensary building in 1928.
Building designation: Dispensary and Stock Shed and Veterinary Station Hospital.
Building dimensions: dispensary 22 ft. x 32 ft., added stock shed 22 ft. x 26 ft.
Foundation and floor: wood and concrete.
Building has electric lights, water connection and sewer, no gas connection.

Note: Dispensary constructed from material found at Post in 1923. Foundation of concrete and wood. Floor in Operating Room concrete, in Dispensary wood. Outside walls of 1 x 12, cracks covered with 1 x 3 battens, 3-ply paper. Cost $126.52. Covering for stocks constructed 1928. Floor concrete, posts 6 x 6, roof 3-ply paper.

STATION VETERINARY HOSPITAL PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY 1920-40s
Building No. 170 (276) - The research on this building has proved to be very challenging. This building was built in stages and basically it appears it has been pieced together over the years. The Dispensary was first built in 1923 from spare materials around the Presidio as notes have stated, the original cost of the building was $126.52. Dimensions of the Dispensary are 22 feet x 32 feet. In 1928 the Stock Shed was added which included a concrete floor and a covered roof. Original dimensions of the Stock Shed were 22 feet x 26 feet and later expanded to 22 feet x 32 feet according to data. One building sheet dated: October 1, 1934 lists $988.84 worth of repairs were done to this building and may have been the results of a building remodel.

The building appears to have seen many changes and the image on the 1940s building sheet and latest building layout sheet that I have been able to find probably shows the building in its completed condition before in was demolished sometime in the 1940s. The building at this time is now being called the Veterinary Station Hospital complete with a sign in the front of the building as shown in the image.

The building records and building layout sheet shows the stock area now enclosed the operating room with table, and an area which appears to be the dispensary, also added is an area with a dirt floor and a 9 ft. x 7 ft. sliding door and a man door. Additions and installations notes shows hot water heater was installed on June and December of 1940 and removed January of 1941.

I believe that the operating room and operating table inside of this building is featured in the movie "Sergeant Murphy". In the movie actor Ronald Reagan's horse, Sergeant Murphy is wounded by the Commander's sword in an accident on Soldier Field's parade ground and is taken to the Station Veterinary Hospital up on the hill to be cared for. The scene shows Sergeant Murphy being lifted up on the operating table to be operated on by the post veterinarian. This is a very good movie and documents the Presidio of Monterey in the late 1930s. The 11th Cavalry and the 76th Field Artillery were used as extras in the movie.

Originally Building No. 170 (276) was built from salvaged material from around the Presidio. The Dispensary, Veterinary Hospital was first built and a horse stock was installed with a covered roof. And later in its final state walls were added to the stock area and an addition added to the back of the building. Two building sheets have been found at the archives for this building. First called a "Veterinary Dispensary" and then in the second building sheet found at the archives with a sign in the front of the building reads: Veterinary Station Hospital. Note: We believe it is possible that the horse operating table in this video was transferred to the Fort Ord Station Veterinary Hospital in 1942 when the horses left the Presidio of Monterey. Based on the images we have of the Fort Ord Veterinary Station's veterinary horse operating table above. If you watch the above video very carefully and look at the image below it appears the tables could be identical. It is also stated that Sgt. Gerald Hicks and Pfc. Tom Lehl, are setting up an operating table at Fort Ord Station Veterinary Hospital in the October 9, 1942 Fort Ord Panorama Newspaper. Could this mean that they are setting up the horse operating table from the Presidio of Monterey?

ISOLATION SHED BUILDING NO. 172
The fifth oldest veterinary building that I have been able to find at the DLIFLC & POM Archives is Building No. 172, Isolation Shed. It is a typed information sheet with handwritten pencil notes. I'm not sure how this building fits in at this time for these reasons, first it is called a "Isolation Shed" without it being identified as a veterinary building like Isolation Shed Veterinary Building No. 255 on the building sheet. In my veterinary research I am not aware of an isolation building being used by any other Army unit except the Veterinary Service. The building number (172) would fit in with the numbering of the Veterinary Office (171) and Dispensary Stock Shed/Veterinary Station Hospital (170) and would put this isolation shed very close in location I would guess. But when the building numbers were changed in the 1930s or 1940s to two hundred numbers in this area of the Presidio I am not exactly sure on their locations and further research is needed.

ISOLATION SHED (VETERINARY) BUILDING NO. 255
The sixth oldest veterinary building that I have been able to find at the DLIFLC & POM Archives is Building No. 255, Isolation Shed (Veterinary). The Veterinary Isolation Shed/Ward as completed November 30, 1929. I have not been able to locate this building on any maps of the Presidio as of yet. It may have been one of the buildings salvaged around the Veterinary Office and Veterinary Station Hospital up on the hill in the early 1940s to make way for the WW2 Temporary Buildings built in this area. Hopefully future research will tell us more.

Capacity: 33 animals.
Building dimensions: 10 ft. x 90 ft. each side.
Foundation: Wood and concrete.
