What we know: |
She must have been a heckuva
woman. Married to Isaac about age 15, she bore him at least 7 children
we know about. Before she turned 30, she--according to the story--divorced
Isaac, and married his cousin, John. I wonder if there was a legal
marriage to John, since we know they lived in Stone Co. at the time, and
there is no record either there, nor in Carroll Co. AR. She was more
than 10 years older than John, had a house full of kids--yet he took her
to wife, and in the 1900 census, they are listed as being married 41 years.
In the 1900 census, she is listed as having had 13 children, with 5 still
living. Those children would be Jacob, George, Bettie, Samuel and
Annis. I only have 9 of her children; I would think that she was
pregnant, despite John's presence in the Civil War, during the years from
1860-1869, with only Samuel and Annis surviving. Nieces and nephews
did live with John and Martha at various times, most notably the children
of John's brother William Henry and his wife, Malita SANDERS; Malita died
fairly young. Despite the family story, their daughter Malita Ann
was not the daughter of Martha Elizabeth and John.
It is said that one daughter--supposedly Barbara--had what was called brain cancer, and lived 4 years before her death. Other researchers have Barbara being born and dying in 1846. But she's alive and present in both the 1850 Taney and 1860 Stone Co. MO census records. Peter also supposedly was born and died prior to the 1850 census. He, too, is present in it (5 months old) and the 1860 census. George married Mary Jane HARP 2 Apr 1875, in Christian Co. MO. They had at least 8 children, and lived most of their lives in Stone Co. MO. The Harp family is another of those suspected Cherokee families who intermarried frequently with other Bilyeu-related families, as well as the Bilyeus themselves. (See some things I learned in tracing these families at the White River Valley website, "Tracing Your Cherokee Roots") Johnie married Christina ?. Someone has sent me her surname, and I've lost the email. They had at least 9 children. I think they moved to AR or OK, for they are not buried in Stone County (or at least I haven't found them!) My uncle thinks that Martha was living with Johnie in the 1920 census in OK, and that is where she died and was buried. Johnie was the father of at least 9 children. Bettie married a first cousin once removed, David Arnold WILLIAMS, 16 Nov 1873. David was the son of Rivers WILLIAMS and Elizabeth ARNOLD. Rivers' sister Catherine Elizabeth WILLIAMS was the wife of Bettie's grandfather, Jacob BILYEU b 1803. She had at least 8 children. Jacob married Sarah Ann JONES in Stone Co. 16 Aug 1878. I have no further information on Barbara, Peter, or William. Samuel married his cousin, Mary Elizabeth CLlNKENBEARD, 26 Aug 1888. She was his father's niece. This was one of those traditional Cherokee marriages, at least in southern MO. Mary was the daughter of William Henry CLINKENBEARD and Malita SANDERS. |
