Generation 1:

MATHIAS ELMORE (I) was born about 1700 in Burlington, New Jersey.  Burlington NJ was founded by Quakers and the Elmore family were Quakers.   He married Charity (maiden name unknown) who was born about 1704.   Matthias and his family moved from Burlington, NJ to Frederick VA area (Winchester area) to the New Garden meeting (Guilford) of North Carolina and then finally settled in Newberry area (Bush River Meeting) of South Carolina.   This family is found in the various Quaker meeting records for these areas.   Matthias Elmore died 1768 in the Bush River area near Newberry, SC.

About 1805-1810 many Quakers families left the Newberry area of SC and moved to western Ohio due to their belief that slavery would lead eventually to warfare.  A number of Matthias Elmore's descendants moved to Ohio and then onto Indiana and other midwestern states.  Other lines remained in the south but moved onto Alabama and Mississippi.  A few remained in South Carolina.

Matthias Elmore and Charity had  three children:   Sarah, William and Stephen.

Generation 2:

I.   Sarah Elmore born 1721 in Burlington, NJ married James DENNIS on 20 March 1738 in Burlington, NJ.    They had a son, Samuel Dennis born about 1747 in Frederick, VA.  Samuel Dennis was mentioned in his grandfather's will.  We know nothing further of her family at this time.

II.  William Elmore born 26 Nov 1726 in Burlington, NC and died 20 May 1792 in Newberry District, SC. He married Abigail RIDGEWAY on 26 Dec 1753 in Frederick VA.  Abigail was born 25 March 1730 in VA and died 3 June 1776 in Newberry, SC.   They had 10 children: Charity, John, Sarah, Stephen, Mary, Hannah, Rachel, Ridgeway, Joseph, David.

III.  Stephen Elmore born 1729 in Burlington, NJ and died 1790 in Newberry, SC.  He married Sarah ALLEN who died about 1786 in Newberry, SC.  They owned property in the Bush River area near Newberry, SC.  Stephen and Sarah had 4 children:   Matthias Elmore (II), William  Elmore("Bill Elmore, the Tory"), Isaac Elmore, Stephen B. Elmore, and Allen Elmore.

William Elmore (aka Bill Elmore) fought for the British during the Revolutionary War in South Carolina.  He was a private in Colonel Daniel Clary's Regiment, Dutch Fork Militia, Ninety Six Brigade in 1780 and 1781.   In 1782 he was a Sergeant in Major Wililam Cunningham's Troop of Mounted Militia, Ninety Six Brigade out of Charlestown, SC.    He left South Carolina in 1783 as a Refugee for East Florida and was listed as one white male and no slaves.   He married Maria Rein (or Rain) and had a child, Mary Elmore born in 1788 in Nassau River, Spanish East Florida.  She was baptized in St. Augustine Parish on 13 May 1790 and listed as a 2 year old.   After this time, William Elmore cannot be located.

It is believed that this William Elmore known as Bill Elmore was a Tory along with the Turner brothers and left the Newberry area after the Revolutionary War to settle in Duval County, Florida.  In the British records, William Elmore is listed as a Sergeant from July 9 to Oct 9, 1782.

From information related to Bloody Bill Cunningham, it notes:   He raised an independent command of mounted loyalists. They were like himself; bold and daring spirits; and many of them like him had already tasted the blood of private revenge. Some of their names are still remembered: - William Parker, Henry Parker, William Kilmer, Jonathan Kilmer, Hall Foster, Jesse Gray, William Dunahox, Isaac, Aaron, and Curtis Mills, Ned and Dick Turner, Matthew Love, Bill Elmore, Hubbles, John Hood, and Moultrie.
