to 1895 in Kansas. We also
came from Austria, Ireland, Scotland, Hungary,
Germany, and England. Traditionally, the last name can tell a lot about
your heritage. The last name often
told where you came from and the class of your family. We haven’t kept that tradition; and so it
isn’t as easy to tell much about a person from their last name these days. |

My
Mother’s Family was Burwell ~ Brown ~ Cogswell ~
Devine ~ Englehaut ~ Garwood ~ Gehr
~ Peden ~McArthur ~ Millen ~ Warren The Burwell family can trace their
ancestors back to the ancient territories of England between the 11th and
12th centuries.
The Burwell family traces their ancestral roots back to Anglo Saxon origin,
and first appeared in ancient medieval records in Suffolk .
That from very early on the Burwell family not only held lands and estates in
England but were also actively allied with other influential families. They
also branched out into other territories and holdings, before taking the long
voyage to the new world. BURWELL
Shield: Gold with an ermine chevron between three burr leaves. BURWELL
Crest: A lion's paw holding three burr leaves. Burwell NAME ·
English: habitational name
from a place named Burwell, of which there are examples in Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire, named with Old English burh ‘fort’ + wella
‘spring’. Much of the research was done many years
ago by Clark Burwell with the help of Bruce W. David .
Some of this information is based on "theory" not "proven
fact". All facts may never be known, since this started centuries ago
and many records were burned during the civil war. I sincerely apologize if
this information "offends" anyone. That is not my intention. My
intention is to find the truth, if that is possible. The theory may never be
proven, but I intend to try. Some of the documentation has been lost over the
years. We continue to research our Genealogy Information, which is not
complete and may not be 100% accurate as yet. We are currently attempting
to confirm the information and continue the research. Please bear with us, as
we research our Burwell Family Tree.
See more about my Burwell line by clicking on various links
throughout. As
I understand the “Burwell” lines in America, from those who claim to be the
authorities on the subject, there are only two. There is the Virginia branch or the
Connecticut branch. We believe our
family belongs to the Virginia branch.
However, it is possible that we came from the Connecticut branch. It is difficult to trace beyond any shadow
of doubt since many records burned during the War of 1812. I’ve been told that our “theory” cannot
be correct since there is “little” documentation of it. However, we do have what I believe to be
adequate documentation to make our theory; and we must keep in mind that records
are only as good as the record maker’s memory and knowledge. The
name appears in various early records as Boralle, Borel, Burwell, and Burrel, in
which last form it appears in the record of the reign of Richard III. My Research and Burwell Page

Edward Houghton Park BURWELL (B. 1579 - D. 1626)
He married Dorthy Bedell, daughter of
William Bedell of Catworth,
County, Huntington, England. Children
After Edward's
death, Dorthy married Roger Wingate, distinguished
for his interest in colonial affairs. Lewis Fairfield Burwell (B. 1621-D. 1653)
Children
Baptized at Ampthill, Bedfordshire, England 3/5/1621. Lewis came to Virginia when a mere boy
with his mother and step-father, Roger Wingate. On June 12, 1648 he patented
2350 acres "lying on the north side of the York River upon Rosewell Creek" adjacent to George Menifie. This land lay in the area which by 1652 had been
mentioned in a record as Gloucester County and Burwell's plantation was
called "Fairfield" and later, "Carter's Creek". Major Lewis Burwell settled about 1640 on
Carter’s Creek in Gloucester County, Virginia. In 1646 he was a member of the deputation
sent to invite Charles II to come to Virginia. He married Lucy Higginson (b: 1626 in
Fairfield, Gloucester, VA), daughter of Captain Robert Higginson and his wife
Joanna Tokesey (one of the first commanders who
subdued the country of Virginia from the power of the heathen. He died November 19, 1653, aged
thirty-three years, and was buried at his seat, Fairfield, Gloucester County,
Virginia, now called Carter’s Creek). After Major Lewis’ death, Lucy married
Colonel William Barnard, of the King’s Council in Virginia. He died November 26, 1675. She married third, Philip Ludwell, and left a son, Philip Ludwell. Philip Ludwell,
husband of said Lucy, commanded Governor Berkeley’s forces against Nathaniel
Bacon. Honorable Lewis Burwell (B.1653 - D.

AFT 1692 The Honorable
Lewis Burwell was of
Queen’s Creek, York County, Virginia of “King’s Creek”, York County,
Virginia and “Fairfield”, Goucester County,
Virginia. He was an earnest supporter
of the Established Church. He was an
influential member of the King’s Council; “Fairfield”, later known as
“Carters Creek”, was said to be the oldest house in Virginia bearing a date
on it’s walls, the
inscription “L.B.A. 1694 was cut into one of the group of diamond-shaped
chimneys, which shows that “Fairfield” built by Hon. Lewis Burwell and his
wife. He married (first) Abigail
Smith, daughter of Anthony and Martha Smith, of Colchester, England, niece
and heiress of Honorable Nathaniel Bacon, the “rebel”. She was a descendant of eleven Kings, even
to Alfred the Great, and Egbert, King of Wessex-Bretwalda,
over England. He married (second)
Martha Lear Cole, widow of Honorable William Cole of the King’s Council, and
Secretary of the State, Daughter of Honorable John Lear, of “Nansemond”, who
was of the King’s Council. He married
first: Abigail Smith (B. 1636 - D. 11/12/1672) a niece and heiress of
Col. Nathaniel Bacon, President of the Council and who hat his death
inherited much property from her wealthy and distinguished uncle. She was
buried in the Burwell graveyard located some distance from the house and
where her husband and many children were later buried. In 1910 these
tombstones were moved to the churchyard of nearby Abingdon Church. He married
second: Martha Lear Cole, born Nansemond County, Virginia, widow of Col.
William Cole and daughter of John Lear Cole and Anne Willis. She died in
1704. Information about

Council in 1702, died 19 Dec. 1710, who married, 1st, Abigail,
daughter of Anthony Smith of Colchester, Eng. She died 12 Nov. 1693.

Paden suggests that the above names may or may not be accurate. When Samuel
Burwell and Hannah Paden were married, she was "read out of the

Samuel III BURWELL (b. 1833 in Espyville, Crawford, Pennsylvania d. Espyville,
burried Espyville
Cemetery) (his father born in NJ and his mother born in Ohio). He married Mary Anne McKee. They were divorced. Story is that he went out west-we don’t know
where-but the “family story” is that he died in Leadville, Colorado. A search of cemetery plots in Leadville by
Elman Burwell did not find the plot. I
believe now that perhaps it was meant to be Linesville Cemetery, as many
Burwell family are buried there. After the divorce, it is told that Mary A
McKee Burwell became a school teacher.
She along with her parents David and Nancy McKee are buried in the Espyville, PA cemetery.
He was listed in 1880 Ohio census as a Pedler. The census records indicate he was married
to Malinda Burwell (her mother was
born in Germany and her father born in Ohio).
This may have been his second marriage after he left Mary A. McKee. We
know that this Samuel married Mary A. McKee, daughter of David
McKee. Mary’s sister was Margaret
McKee who married Nicles Parshell. Curious if this could have been a second
marriage for Samuel and then he married a third time and went out west? Our records indicated there might have been
the other two children; possibly from the marriage to Mary A McKee or a
second marriage? Notes: I can also place this Samuel Burwell in Kansas
back in 1895 as well as Frank Gaige Burwell as per
census records and I have a will from later that leaves some property in
Yates Center, KS to my grandfather Orlo
Burwell. (probably through the
documents of Ralph O Andrews which was left to Maud McArthur Warren
and Riley Griffeth Warran-Maida’s
parents not Orlo’s parents) Along with several
property ownership in Pennsylvania and New York areas. Records show his parents were from New
Jersey and Ohio. Also, we know that this line is linked to Hannah Pedan and have met relatives in Wichita, KS who have
significant documentation.
Interestingly, my sister and I thought we were the first of the family
to land in Kansas. Guess not! Interestingly I found some very old photos
of Mabel Millen and her brother Walter Millen in some stuff from Uncle Clark.

BURWELL
(b. 1870 or 1871 d.
) This could be spelled Gauge and he may have been nick named "Gaigy" (Interestingly,
the Burwell who proved lineage to Isaac Pedan for DAR
was also from Indiana) He married Mabel
W. Millen (B. 4/6/1875 - D. unknown) on January 1, 1892 by the Rev. T.F. Devaux at the M.E. Parsonage, Gehrtown,
PA. At that time Frank was from Pine Township, Crawford County, PA. Mabel was
from Sadsbury Township, Crawford County, PA. We have the bible record to support this
marriage. The story is that Frank
divorced Mabel and ran off with his cousin (which if the report that he married
Malinda Burwell is correct would validate this story); never to be heard from
again; possible to Leadville, CO also.
Maybe in search of his father who left when he was probably 8 or 9
based on the census records of him living with his mother Mary and her cousin
Margaret? Mabel then married Fred H
Pettit and was found in the 1900 Census in Conneatville,
Crawford, PA. Mabel and Fred lived in
Conneaut, Ohio for most of Mabel’s life.
They had no other children. Mabel worked for the Nickel Plate Railroad
until her retirement. Finding
information on Frank Gaige Burwell was one of the
biggest road blocks Uncle Clark ran into.
Without finding Frank it was nearly impossible to piece together the
real connection to the Burwell's.
Recently, through the innovation of the internet and all the genealogy
information available, I have found Frank and also found why it was so
difficult to find his trail. His
parents divorced and must have had a custody battle over this young man. It was through some little notes Uncle
Clark had written about him and other relatives that led me to finally find
his mother Mabel Millen Burwell's relatives and thus find Frank. Now that I have this information, I am
digging deeper into the connections to the Burwell's of Virginia and Canada. I wanted so badly to tell Uncle Clark of my
discovery, but he passed away before I could.

so hard to find. As a young child he

the New York, Ohio, and Kansas areas.
I have the original land documents which are posted with other Warren and McArthur
and Burwell wills and documents. Orlo lived in Gem Village, La Plata, Colorado outside of
Bayfield, La Plata, Colorado at the time of his
death. This is where I visited him and
lived with him for about 6-8 months when I was 15 or 16. He died in a car accident my Junior year in
high school, just a year or two after I had lived there with him. He as a very nice old man. I had heard stories about how mean he
was. Not when I met him, he was very
kind. Orlo
is buried in Ironton, OH next to his second wife whom he divorced, Maida
Maude Burwell. They hated each other
at the end so I am sure they are both turning over at that decision. However, I am sure it was because the
children wanted their parents buried together. Mildred Ruth BURWELL (b. 9/12/1926 d.
6/23/1979) Mildred was probably
born in Ashtabula, Ohio. Her parents
were Orlo Ray and Maida Maude Warren Burwell. She was English, Irish, Dutch, and
German. Mildred worked hard during the
depression to help the family and to put her brother Lloyd through law
school. Stories are that Maida and her
mother Maude were very mean and cruel, and I confirm that to be true. Mildred married James Howard Chek approximately 1948, divorced October 13, 1960. The
"Four Musketeers" were split up at a very young age and deprived of
having a relationship with both parents. James and Mildred started CHEK Trailer Sales, in Mentor, OH with three
or four locations. They lived most of their marriage at CHEK trailer
sales in Mentor, moving to Dream Haven in 1957 or 1958. They were divorced October 13, 1960.
Although we will never really know what happened between James and Mildred,
one thing I do know is a marriage may survive many things, but once another
woman enters the scenario the marriage rarely survives. But, I know that a lot can happen between
two people in a very short time. I was just little girl, who did not
understand how two people could fall out of love and what happens to them
when that happens. I did not realize
how difficult that was for my Mom and Dad too. Someone said once, that in marriage, you
either have to love them more or stop loving them. Mildred was deeply in love with
James and know what it's like when the man you loved
walks away; leaving your heart empty.
Losing two of her daughters during the custody battle could not have
been easy. I also know that she worked
two and three jobs most of her life trying to give me things that other kids
had and often apologized for not being able to provide me with more. She was in several relationships, searching
for the love she longed to have back.
Mildred later married Richard Buzzi and
moved to Kansas to be near her daughters.

Facts and Documentation about this family RESEARCH
on John Burwell and brother James who left Jamestown in 1721 for New Jersey From
the research I have done so far, I cannot confirm John (born 1695) was the
son of Lewis Burwell and Martha Lear Cole Burwell. However, it appears to me to be more than
likely the spot this John does belong!! “Two are
better off than one, because together they can work more effectively. If one of
them falls down, the other can help him up… Two people
can resist an attack that would defeat one person alone. A rope
made of three cords is hard to break.”
