Our families come from Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia and dates back to 1895 in Kansas.   We also came from Austria, Ireland, Scotland, Hungary, Germany, and England. Traditionally, the last name can tell a lot about your heritage.  The last name often told where you came from and the class of your family.  We haven’t kept that tradition; and so it isn’t as easy to tell much about a person from their last name these days.

Our research has only just begun. We continue to research our Genealogy Information, which is not complete and may not be 100% accurate as yet. We are currently attempting to confirm the information and continue the research. Please bear with us, as we research our Crabtree Family Tree.  It appears that our Crabtree family also comes from Yorkshire, England, Tennessee, and Missouri.

Our Crabtree Connection is through

My Spouse’s Family Grow ~ Black ~ Crabtree ~ Garwood ~ March ~ Pruett ~ Piet ~ Stice

Our Crabtree Connection is through the Grow Family The Grow family is from Germany.  Our Grow was married to a Crabtree. The Crabtree family is from Yorkshire, England.

Crabtree NAME

  • Dweller at a Crab-Apple-Tree
  • Our Crabtree family comes from Yorkshire, England, Tennessee, and Missouri
  • The Crabtree family originated in Yorkshire, England-the name coming from the fact that they lived by the crabtrees in the county of York. The earliest record 'From the Crabtrees of Southwest Virginia'-no longer in print was of John Crabtree who lived in Yorkshire around the end of the 14th century; William Crabtree of Yorkshire, during the same time period; William Crabtree of the parish of Smithe, Yorkshire 1412; and a bit later, John Crabtree of Halifax, Yorshire. All the Crabtree's are thought to have a common origin in the Crabtrees of Yorkshire. 'Crabtree Tule River Patriarchs, Marilyn Meredith, 1984, Golden West Publishers'
  • The Crabtree name can, with high degree of accuracy, be traced back to 14th century England. At about that time the use of surnames became popular. As far as we know, the Family Crabtree started in only one place, a village in Yorkshire. It seems that this large family group was centered about one large Crabapple Tree!
  • The first known record of a Crabtree coming to America was in 1622 in Massachusetts. The record of these Crabtrees vanished until some Crabtrees appeared in Philadelphia and then moved on to Baltimore. source: "The Crabtrees of Southwest Virginia"

Crabtree Family

A great deal of information came from Ben Crabtree of Missouri who contacted me back in 2000 when I created my first website for genealogy.  It looks like he did a much better job finding the Crabtree family than I did.  I was more focused on the Burwell line.  Here is Ben’s site with pictures and stories of the Crabtree line:  http://crabtree_tree.tripod.com/OldCrabtreePhotos.htm Some info came from Katherine Grow, widow of Roger Grow Aunt/Uncle).

The information that these Crabtrees are connected and descend from John Crabtree of Sheffield, Yorkshire, England comes from "Chester Crabtree, Attorney at Law, 212 Sterry Building, Pontiac, Illinois" and was published in 1965 by Arah Fritz in Pecos, Texas. He does not offer anything forensically, but says that when his father was alive, his father was still corresponding with the family in England and that the family history had been passed down from one generation to the next, unbroken, rather than 'researched' and 'discovered'. He said he noticed that when he did travel to places, the Crabtrees and their history in those places matched what his father and grandfather had said. His history of the family, the way it was passed down to him, is given on pages 196 through 199 and he signs and dates it August 30th 1954.

(Haskins camp, a settlement south of Augusta during the oil boom) He worked for Beachcraft in Wichita, Kansas. We attended his funeral.  When Jim and I first married with stayed with Grandma and Grandpa Grow several times when we visited Atlanta relatives.  Grandma had extremely long braided hair.  Grandpa Grow waited on her hand and foot.  Jim said it was because he felt guilty for not having treated her better when they were younger.  Someplace in the ole’ photo albums I know there is also a picture of Roscoe and Goldie, I will have to go back through the albums again and find it too.
