families come from Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New
York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia and dates back
to 1895 in Kansas. We also
came from Austria, Ireland, Scotland, Hungary,
Germany, and England. Traditionally, the last name can tell a lot about
your heritage. The last name often
told where you came from and the class of your family. We haven’t kept that tradition; and so it isn’t
as easy to tell much about a person from their last name these days. |
Our McMurtrie
connection is through my late grandmother, Geraldine McMurtire Our research has only just begun. We continue
to research our Genealogy Information, which is not complete and may not be
100% accurate as yet. We are currently attempting to confirm the
information and continue the research. Please bear with us, as we research
our McMurtry or McMurtrie
Family Tree. Our
McMurtrie family is from Ireland and Scotland. (It’s hard to believe that Grammy was Irish,
aren’t they suppose to have red hair and hot temper and love the Irish
brew? Grammy never had a temper! And,
I'm sure she rarely drank any kind of brew).
I found 95% of this information from one search on familysearch.org
and rootsweb and the genealogy information of a Mr.
Richard McMurtry.
I tried to email him, to thank him and to share some very old family
photos, but my email was returned because the email account no longer
exists. If anyone knows of this
person, please tell him thank you for doing such wonderful research! I
was close to Grammy (Geraldine McMurtrie) during my
late teens, but by the time I was old enough to care about genealogy stuff, I
didn’t have another opportunity to visit her and ask questions. I have a
picture of Uncle Fred from the war days that I got from my sister along with
a few that are probably other McMurtrie family I
haven’t identified yet. All of
Grammy’s belongings I suppose went to my Aunt Lois and my sister Cheryle, but I have no idea what pictures might be just
laying in a box untouched somewhere.
What a shame that is. Our McMurtrie Family Tree William McMurtrie David McMurtrie married
Margery Fisher.
David was born 1721 in Dalmellington,
Ayrshire, Scotland, and died 1785. He was the son
of William McMurtrie. David married Margery Fisher died 13 Feb
1770 in Pennsylvania. Children of Margery Fisher and David McMurtrie:
James McMurtrie married
Elizabeth Elliott--
James McMurtrie
was born 16 Dec 1768 in Pennsylvania, and died 25 Sep 1838 in West Twp, Pa.
He was the son of David McMurtrie and Margery Fisher. He married Elizabeth Elliott was born 1785
in Ireland. Children of Elizabeth Elliott and James McMurtrie 1768 are:
David McMurtrie married
Catherine Staighhoff--David was born 8 Sep
1807, and died 1848. He was the son of James McMurtrie
and Elizabeth Elliott. Cathrine Straighhoff was born
11 Sep 1810 in Pennsylvania, and died 20 Nov 1865. Children of Cathrine
Straighhoff and David McMurtrie:
Samuel M McMurtrie married
Eliza Dunlap. Samuel M McMurtrie
was born 1830 in Pennsylvania. He was the son of David McMurtrie
and Cathrine Straighhoff.
Eliza Dunlap was born 1833, and died 1875. Children of Eliza Dunlap and Samuel M McMurtrie:
James Lewis McMurtrie
married Leona Farnsworth. James was born 1863 in Pennsylvania, and died 2
Feb 1920 in Cleveland, Oh. Anna
Leona Farnsworth was born 1869 in Pennsylvania, and died Oct 1945. Children of Anna Leona Farnsworth and
James Lewis McMurtrie:
Geraldine Francis McMurtrie
married Steven James (Istavan) Cseh.
Geraldine was born February 10, 1905 in Pennsylvania, and died March
14, 2001 in Clearwater, Florida. She
was the daughter of James Lewis McMurtrie and Anna
Leona Farnsworth.She
lived in Cleveland and Willoughby, OH until the late 60s when she moved to
Florida to be near her son, Jim Chek and daugther Lois.
Geraldine and Jim were very close.
Her daughter Lois also lived there, but she lived several years with
Daddy so I know they were very close) She married first Steven
James (Istavan) Cseh (B.
8/3/1903 - D. 11/16/1995) (He came to the United States in 1907 from
Hungary with his parents Steve and Elizabeth Cseh. He became a naturalized citizen in 1911) (She
had Brothers and sisters but we only knew two: Uncle Fred and Aunt
Marie. That may have been because her
family was in Pennsylvania so we may only have seen them a few times maybe
during a family reunion) Children
of Geraldine and Steven James (Istavan) Cseh:
Note:
Steve married second Elizabeth (Betty) and they had a daughter
Catherine. They married about 1944 and divorced 42 years later in
1986. Steve married again in 1988 to Connie M Rohfeld. Steve was mostly estranged from his son and
daughter from his first marriage. We aren't sure if that was by his
choice, his first or second wife's choice or just happened due to distance. At any rate, it's the kids who suffer the
loss a parent in their lives.
Geraldine married second Ray F. Esterle May
20, 1944. We were not even aware of
that marriage until stumbling across the marriage document recently. She married third, Lawrence (Larry) ViK about 1950, they had no
children of their own. (Jim's first generation of kids knew Larry as "Grampy") 1930

Steven A lot of work went into setting these
files up electronically on the Web, and I would like to thank all those
involved in the Cuyahoga Country Project! James Howard Cseh~Chek
(1926-1991) married Mildred Ruth Burwell, then Carol
Eldridge. James was born 4/23/1926
- died 9/18/1991. James was born in Cleveland,
Ohio. He went to grade school at
Longview Elementary, middle school at Willoughby Junior High, and high school
at Willoughby Union High in Willoughby, Ohio. Jim changed the spelling
of his last name from Cseh to Chek
December 22, 1943. (Interestingly that
coincides with the approximate time of Geraldine and Steve's
divorce-perhaps to cut all ties with a man who stepped out on his marriage
and left two children behind?). I
remember a teacher there mentioning it when I went to school there-but
wondered why my last name wasn't spelt the same as his was. Jim was a WWII
Veteran. (He was in Medical, then transferred to technical and was a
Hamm radio operator) Jim was engaged to marry Audrey Gifford of his
graduating class prior to leaving for the war and they wrote letters
throughout the war. Wonder what
happened to that relationship when he came home, because we don't think they
got married. He married Mildred Ruth
Burwell around 1948. They had four daughters. They owned Chek
Trailer Sales, and 3-4 trailer parks in Mentor, Ohio
and then purchased property in Madison about 1958, remodeling it into the ACF
Club-Dream Haven Resort. (The Ashtabula
Country Family Club-Dream Haven) Jim and Millie divorced in late 1960 or
early 1961. Children
of James and Mildred Chek:
James then married Carol Eldridge
in May of 1961. They moved to Largo, Florida area and raised their family
along with Diana, Sandra, and Cheryle from his
first marriage. Children
of James and Carol Chek:
Deborah Jean met xxxxxxx while
home on leave from the U.S. Navy. They were married at United Methodist
Church. The Reverend Dellenbaugh proceeded
the ceremony. They had some very good
years together. Children: o

Christian “Two are
better off than one, because together they can work more effectively. If one of
them falls down, the other can help him up… Two people
can resist an attack that would defeat one person alone. A rope
made of three cords is hard to break.”
