The information below was found at World Connect-Rootsweb, submitted by Roberta Dooley and has not been checked, but the references contained are very good. Please note that this is presented here for educational and informational purposes only for family members.

The earliest record found to date on Charles McKinney is his purchase of 200 acres of land in Cumberland County, VA. on October 3, 1752 for a sum of 13 pounds from Michael and Ann Rowland as is recorded in county deed book two. The next record found is that of a land grant for 124 acres in Cumberland County, VA on August 16, 1756 as is recorded in book 33, page 254 of the land grant office at Richmond, VA (A typewritten copy of this land grant is in this book). He then sold the 124 acres on October 22, 1761 to William Samson for the sum of 12 pounds as is recorded in county deed book 3, page 239. Charles then purchased 75 acres of land in Lunenburg County (that part which later became Charlotte County), VA from Nathaniel Christian for 80 pounds as recorded in Lunenburg County, VA deed book 7, page 349, entered under date of March 12, 1762. Charles apparently moved his family to this location about this time. We next find record of Charles in a census and tax report taken in VA in 1782 on which we find him listed as a resident of Charlotte County and being the head of a family of seven white persons and eight negro slaves. His sons, Charles Jr.., and William are also listed as heads of families in this same county in 1782. Charles deeded his land in Charlotte County, VA to his son Charles Jr.., on November 1, 1784 for 210 pounds.

Total land was 247 acres and the deed was witnessed by John Ramsey and sons of Charles Sr; Stephen McKinney and Jesiah McKinney as is recorded in county deed book 5. The original 200 acres was sold to Simond Rowland for 20 pounds on December 1, 1761 as recorded in deed book 3, page 272. The first record of Mary Anne being the wife of Charles is her signature on the deed recorded in Cumberland County, VA on December 1, 1761. Her name does not appear on any earlier records that has been found. The last record of Mary Anne is her signature on the deed recorded in Charlotte County on November 1, 1784. Charles moved to Lincoln County, KY via the Cumberland Gap between November 1, 1784 and August 1, 1785 as we find recorded in that county under date August 1, 1785 a consent for his daughter, Elizabeth to marry John Lawrence signed Charles McKinney and attested to by Stephen McKinney and William WILSON. This page is from Kkentucky Pioneer Court Records, page 73 and Virginia Records, volume 6, September 1909, page 184.

His will was probated in Mercer County, KY in May 1798. Charles land grant from the King of England was for 124 acres in Cumberland Co., VA. on AUgust 6, 1756. Charles's sons helped Daniel Boone cut the trail through the Cumberland Pass from Virginia to Kentucky. Charles lived in Lunenburg and Charlotte Counties, VA. Charles first settled near Crab Orchard at McKinney Station in Lincoln County., KY. Charles and his sons went further down the Wilderness Trail to Logan Co., KY and built McKinney Station. Charles then came back to Mercer CO., KY before 1785. Charles had at least 13 sons. This statement is made based on a quotation take from part of a book which talks of one of Charles' sons Major (War 1812) James McKinney, titled Pioneer Familiesof Missouri, by Bryan and Rose. This book states, "He (Major James McKinney) had 12 brothers, 3 of whom were killed in the Revolutionary War." Names not known of the 3 which were killed in the war.
