"Mrs.Angeline Carroll of Shoal is the grandaughter of a couple said to have ridden horseback from Giles County, VA. to this area soon after their marriage in 1808.
William and Eleanor Hoover Brumfield certainly arrived early enough for him and his brother, Byrd Brumfield to serve in the War of 1812 from Cabell County and they probably reached the area while it was still part of Kanawha County.
Family tradition says that William traded the horse he rode for a large tract of land, then borrowed the horse back from it's new owner, and rode it back to Richmond
(VA) to record the deed.
Wherther or not this story is true, Mr. Brumfield did acquire several tracts of land in Cabell County, finally settling on a 250-acre farm at the mouth of Wolf Creek, almost in sight of the home where his granddaughter now lives.
Mrs.,John Myrtle, the former Ursula Hale....has an authentic copy of the will in which William Brumfield, her great grandfather, shortly before his death in November 1833,
"being weak of body, but of perfect mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this mortal life".. bequeathed his land and other possessions to his widow and ten children. 1.John H., 2. Henderson P., 3.Allen T., 4. Jordon and 5. Bostick Brumfield, and 6. Susanah Brumfield, wife of John Hatfield, were given a 150 acre tract of land, his wheat crop and debts payable both to and by him.
A 110 acre tract was left to his widow during her widowhood, thereafter to his sons 7. Milton D., and 8. William W. Brumfield. Out of the estate two other daughters, 9. Margaret Ann and 10. Kit Ann (Kathren) were to receive a horse and saddle, cow and calf, bed and bedclothes each, when they married or became of age, and all the infant children were to be raised and sent "to such schools as may be near enough". Bostick was to have a cow and calf, Jordon one clay bank horse".
The will was witnessed by William H. Gholson, Wesley Ferguson and Benjamin Brown and recorded by JOhn Samuels, all familar names in early Cabell County history.
From the will and other records, William Brumfield is shown to be a man of considerable note. According to Colonel George S.Wallace, Mr. Brumfield led a company of calvary from Cabell County in the War of 1812, though nor record of it is in existance. also he was a justice of the peace in Cabell County in 1818. He paid $50.00 cash for the first 100 acre tract purchasedat Wolf Creek from James Watson, a New York land agent, on June 8, 1828 and $400.00 cash for a 150 acre tract bought from John and Mary Jane Allison on January 19, 1833.
Apparently (1) John H. (Humphrey) Brumfield was the eldest son; he was already married to Rachel Haskins by 1825. They purchased land near the mouthof Big Ugly Creek, where the Brumfields seemed to have lived in Cabell County about the time of his fahter's death. John and Rachel are the ancestors of the Lincoln and Logan County Brumfields.......
(2) Henderson Brumfield married Malinda or Mathilda Hatton onMarch 8, 1828 and moved west with other members of her family. She was the daughter of Samuel Hatton.
(3) Allen T., the 3rd son was born in 1812. He married Nancy Adkins Watts, daughter of Ed and Jennie Bartram Watts and widow of Hawkins Watts about 1846.....
(4) Jordon and Emily, his wife moved to Missouri by 1939.
( Note: Jordon did not marry in VA., Book 2, page 39 of the Howard County, Missouri records show a marriage of Jordon Brumfield to Emily Isbel the 7th of February 1836, solomized by J.M. Redman, JP. In another transcribed record, this marriage is read/shown as Brownfield and Isbee, which is not correct)
(5) Bostick Brumfield's wife was named Ann. He went to California in the 1849 gold rush and died there. It is not known whether he left any children.
(6) Susannh and John Hatfield moved to Kentucky, somewhere beyond Louisa.
(7) Milton Brumfield settled on Gragston Creek and was the ancestor of the Brumfields in the Pritchard-Louisa area.
(8) William Wirt Brumfield mrried Lucinda Brumfield, a sister of George, Slone and Perry Brumfild in Lawrence County, Ohio, Apparently they were childrenof an older George Brumfiled who purchased part of the William Brumfield farm from Johnn and Susannah Hatfield in 1837, and sold it to Thomas Syrus in 1839. His wife was named Anna and they seem to have been the ancestors of the Ohio Brumfields. He may have been a first cousin of William......
(9) Margaret Ann is not mentioned in this article. In another much later article by the same author,
(10}"No trace has been found
"Katheren Ann Brumfield" except that Allen named his first daughter after her, she may have died in youth"....."
Actually she married and moved to Missouri

There is more to this article naming children of some of them and their locations.
